외척과의 관계에서 본 고려 의종의 폐위와 명종의 즉위 (The Dethronement of Goryo King Uijong and Enthronement of Myungjong in Relation to the Maternal Relatives)

초록

고려사에서 의종의 폐위와 명종의 즉위에는 의종의 실정과 문신집권의 무신차별, 일반군인의 불만 등이 거론되고 일정 사실을 반영한다. 더불어 의종의 측근세력으로 간과할 수 없는 세력이 바로 외척이다. 따라서 본 연구는 고려 의종의 폐위와 명종의 즉위 배경을 외척 定安任氏와의 관계에서 밝히고자 하였다. 의종이 정국의 주도권을 장악하지 못한 한 요인은 균형적 역할의 외척 정안임씨를 배척하여 지지기반을 상실했기 때문이다. 연구자들은 대체로 외척이 왕을 지지하고 보호하는 후원세력이라는 입장에 동의한다. 그럼에도 의종은 모후인 공예태후를 멀리하고 외척을 배척하였다. 반면 명종은 외척 정안임씨와의 안정된 관계에서 국왕을 수호하고 보위하는 외척의 기본적인 소임에 충실하도록 했다. 연구방법은 기왕의 연구성과를 토대로, 사료 분석과 해석을 하였다. 내용은 의종의 정안임씨 배척배경과 폐위, 명종의 즉위와 외척의 복권과정에 천착하였다. 결론적으로 의종은 외척을 배제하고 멀리함으로써 지지기반을 상실하였고 정국운영의 주도권을 장악하지 못하고 결국 몰락했다. 그러나 명종은 왕권에 대한 정치적 야망으로 외척의 후원과 익양후 시절 형성된 정치세력의 지지하에 명종으로 즉위하였다. 명종대 정안임씨의 구체적 정치활동에 대한 아쉬움은 차후 연구에서 천착해 나가겠다.

영어초록

In Goryeo history, the dethronement of King Uijong and enthronement of Myungjong, discussed King Uijong’s wrong politics, the literary ruling group’s discrimination against military officals, and complaints from ordinary soldiers, reflecting certain facts. In addition, the foundation that cannot be overlooked as a close aide to King Uijong is the maternal relatives. Therefore this study is purposed to reveal the background of the dethronement of Goryeo king Uijong and enthronement of Myungjong, in relation to the king’s maternal relatives, Jeongan Iim family. Because, one factor that King Uijong failed to take the initiative of the political situation was that he lost his support base by rejecting maternal relatives, Jeong An-im with a balanced role. Generally researchers agree that the king’s maternal relatives are the supporters and patrons who support and protect the king. Nevertheless, King Uijong kept away from his mother, empress dowager Gongye and rejected his maternal relatives. On the other hand, king Myungjong had his maternal relatives, Jeongan-Lim family be faithful to their basic duty, and protect and support the king, based on his stable relationship with his maternal relatives. The research was carried out by analyzing and interpreting the historic materials based on previous research results. The point is focused on the background of king Uijong's rejecting the Jeongan-Lim family and his dethronement, and the enthronement of Myungjong and the restoration process of the Jeongan-Lim family. In conclusion, king Uijong lost the base of support by excluding and keeping away from his maternal relatives, and finally failed to seize the initiative in the operation of political situations to ultimately collapse. But, Myungjong succeeded to the throne as King Myungjong with the backing of his maternal relatives and the support from the political forces formed during his Ikyanghu period, based on his political ambitions for the throne. The specific political activities of Jeongan-Lim family during the period of king Myungjong’s reign will be explored and examined in the future research.
