초록

이 논문은 불교 조계종의 종합수도장인 오대 총림의 역사와 전통 및 가풍과 문화 그리고 역할과 기능에 대해 살펴본 글이다. 통도사(靈鷲), 해인사(海印), 송광사(曹溪), 수덕사(德崇), 백양사(古佛)를 기반으로 한 오대 총림들은 어려운 여건에도 불구하고 불교계 안팎에서 여러 가지 역할을 해 왔다. 조계종의 3대 지표는 ‘역경’(譯經)과 ‘포교’(布敎)와 ‘도제양성’(徒弟養成)이다. 경전 번역은 불교의 기반을 정비하여 전문화하는 일이며, 포교는 양성된 도제를 통해 역경하고 전법(傳法)하는 일이다. 도제양성은 역경과 포교를 담당할 전문적인 인재와 대중화의 주역을 육성하여 적재적소에 배치하는 일이다.
이러한 삼대 지표에 비추어볼 때 현재의 조계종 오대 총림의 기능과 역할은 일개의 교구본사 이상의 역할과 기능을 넘어서지 못하는 인상을 주고 있다. 그 이유는 총림이 지니고 있는 ‘종합적 성격’과 강원과 선원 및 율원 등의 ‘유기적 특성’을 온전히 드러내지 못하는 데에 있다. 이를 보완하기 위해서는 해당 총림권에 들어있는 각 교구본사 사이의 상호 독립의 역할과 상호 보완의 기능이 함께 이루어져야만 한다. 도제양성을 통하지 않고서는 불교의 미래를 기대하기 어렵기 때문이다. 그런 점에서 총림의 건설은 곧 붇다로 대표되는 ‘전인적 인간상’을 탄생시키기 위한 조계종단의 깊은 의지를 보여주는 것이라고 할 수 있다.
불교가 이 시대에 해줄 수 있는 가장 큰 명약은 눈앞에 부딪치는 ‘현상’ 혹은 ‘대상’에 대해 흔들림이 없는 마음자세를 확보해 주는 일이다. 총림은 우리의 몸과 마음을 다스리는 수행의 공간이다. 동시에 수행자를 배출하는 곳이며 물질문명에 지쳐있는 현대인들에게 마음의 평화를 가져다주는 훌륭한 공간이다. 해서 ‘급속’(急速)한 물질문명에 지쳐 있는 현대인들에게 불교 총림이 보여주는 ‘서행’(徐行)의 정신문명은 치유의 명약이 될 수 있을 것이다.
총림의 기능과 역할을 극대화하는 지름길은 불교의 전인적 인간상의 제시와 이러한 인간을 만들어내기 위한 시스템을 확보하는 것이다. 이것은 인도 당시부터 불교가 제시해 왔던 자리적 인간상과 이타적 인간상을 탄생시키는 방법이었다. 따라서 우리 시대 불교총림이 해야 할 급선무는 지친 현대인들의 마음을 평화롭게 해주는 총림의 시스템적 기능을 회복하는 일이다. 그리하여 우리들의 마음을 맑고 깨끗하게 할 정신의 산소를 공급하는 일이다. ‘삶의 새로운 전형’으로서 ‘붇다’가 우리에게 보여준 것은 마음을 평화롭게 하는 지혜였기 때문이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to research histories, traditions, customs, cultures, roles and functions of five comprehensive temples, which are general ascetic centers of Jogye School. The five comprehensive temples such as Tongdosa(Yeongchuk), Haeinsa(Haein), Songgwangsa(Jogye), Sudeoksa(Deoksung) and Baekyangsa(Gobul) have played various roles around Buddhist world in spite of difficult conditions. 3 mottos of Jogye School are ‘sutra translation', 'propagation' and 'disciple nurturing'. Sutra translation is the work to maintain and specialize the ground of Buddhism and propagation is the work to translate sutra and teach Buddha through nurtured disciple. Disciple nurturing is the work to nurture specialized manpower, who will be in charge of sutra translation and propagation and who will lead population of Buddhism and deploy the right man in the right place.
When considering three mottos, in the researcher's opinion, the functions and roles of current five comprehensive temples of Jogye School do not go beyond role and function of a doctrinal school's headquarter. The reason is that comprehensive temples' roles of 'comprehensive characteristics' such as meditation hall, monk' school and vinaya schools' roles of 'organic characteristics' are not properly performed. In order to improve the problem, there shall be a mutually independent role and mutually reinforcing function between doctrinal schools' headquarters. It is because it is hard to expect the future of Buddhism without nurturing disciples. From that point, the construction of comprehensive temple shows the deep will of Jogye School to bear 'whole human image' that the representative of the Buddha.

The most important role of Buddhism in this age is to secure an attitude that is not shaken by phenomenon' or 'object' that people face with. Comprehensive temple is an ascetic place to cultivate our bodies and minds. At the same time, comprehensive temple is an outstanding place that shall be performed in the comprehensive temple is to provide modern people, who are tired of material civilization, with mental peace as well as produce ascetics. In this way, the mental civilization of 'slow movement' that comprehensive temple introduces to modern people, who are tired of rapid material civilization, can be a good healing medicine.
The shortcut to maximize function and role of comprehensive temple is to suggest whole human image of Buddhism and secure the system for producing this kind of human. This kind of Buddhism study method has been a shortcut to produce self-seeking and altruistic human image that Buddhism has suggested from the age of India. Therefore, comprehensive temple shall recover its systematic function to provide modern people, who are tired, with mental peace. At the same time, the most urgent thing that comprehensive temple has to perform in this age is to provide people with mental oxygen that can make mind clean. It is because 'Buddha' showed us the wisdom to make mind peaceful as a 'new pattern of life'.
