천태종 구인사의 종파성 확보를 위한 플랫폼 구도 (Platform for securing the sectarianity of Chentaejong’s Guin Temple)

초록

본 논문을 통해 대한불교 천태종(이하 현 천태종)의 존립을 위한 학술적 근거를 세우고, 이를 통해 종명 사용에 대한 학술적 기반을 구축하여 그 정당성을 확보하고자 한다. 상월(1922~1974)은 단양 소백산에서 구인사를 개산(1951)하고 천태종 중흥을 선언(1966)하였는데 이는 조선 세종조에 종명을 상실한 이후 542년 만이다. 현 천태종은 그 시간의 공백을 넘어 종파를 계승한 것임을 증명해야 한다. 따라서 종파성을 갖추지 못한다면 종명 사용의 근거와 종단 설립의 명분을 잃게 된다. 필자는 천태종학 전공자로서 상월의 조사 추존과 종파적 기반을 세우기 위해 이 분야에 천착하였다. 이에 중흥조인 상월의 행장을 고증하고 구인사의 불교문화에 대한 종파성을 확보하는 아젠다를 제시하고자 한다.
상월과 그의 문도들의 노력으로 구인사는 현 천태종의 본산으로 발전하였다. 그러나 상월의 생년 오류로 인해 중흥조사 추증의 보편성을 획득하지 못하고 있다. 상월은 활동초기 자신의 연령을 11년 증가시킨 방편을 단행하였다. 조명기는 『상월원각대조사오도기략』(1987)을 기술하면서 오류의 생년에 기초하여 연보를 제작했다. 그런데 학자들이 이 오류의 연도를 검증이나 확인 없이 학술논문에 인용하는 폐단이 발생했다. 이에 대한 출구전략으로서 상월 생년에 대한 이원화, 즉 신앙적 활용과 학술적 인용의 구분을 제안한다. 이에 상월의 행적을 포함한 구인사 연구의 개설이 필요하며, 따라서 고려와 조선 초기까지의 존립했던 천태종의 법맥계승을 정당화하고자 한다.
이 연구의 방법으로서 상월연구와 구인사 불교현상에 대한 종학적 관점의 연구가 필요하다. 종파란 종조를 세우고 타 종단과 차별성(도그마)을 갖춘 정설(正說)을 구비해야할 의무가 있다. 천태종의 중흥조 계승은 인도의 용수, 중국의 지의에 이은 송 지례 등이며, 고려는 의천과 요세로 이어졌다. 그 종풍을 대한민국의 상월이 계승한 중흥조임을 증명해야 한다. 그러나 현 천태종은 그간 종파문화의 축적이 빈약했으므로 근래의 연구 성과들은 매우 소중하다. 정보혁명(제4차 산업혁명, 4IR: fourth industrial revolution)의 시대를 앞두고, 그 자료들을 아카이브로 구축하고 종단 내외에 제공할 플랫폼의 구비가 필요하다. 이에 종파적 아젠다를 수립하고 관련 컨텐츠(빅데이터)를 생산할 필요성을 기술하였다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to establish an academic foundation for the existence of the Cheontae Order and justify the use of the order name. In 1951, Sangwol (1922-1974) built Guinsa and declared the restoration of the Cheontae Order in 1966. It took 500 years for the order to be reinstated since it lost its name in early Chosun dynasty. The order has a duty to academically prove that it has rightfully succeeded the denomination. As a student of the study of Cheontae Order, I efforted to honor Sangwol as the great master and build a foundation for the study of the order. Therefore, I am to propose a research method for studying the achievements of Sangwol and the temples of Guinsa.
By the efforts of Sangwol and his disciples, Guinsa was made the head temple of Cheontae Order. By the declaration of Sangwol, there must be a study by the denomination on his achievements. However, due to the error in his year of birth, his prominence had been shunned and praising him as the great master had lacked the momentum for universality. This is accountable to his disciples and the scholars in the field. At the beginning of his career, Sangwol added 11 years to his age, which was incompetently applied in his chronicles by Myeonggi Jo. Consequently, this error of ways spread, and the use of this faulty information in papers was unprecedented. We are in a dire need to separate religious data and academic studies. Therefore, we need to establish the study of Guinsa, which includes the study of Sangwol, to justify the succession of Dharma of the Cheontae Order, which existed all throughout the Goryeo dynasty until early Chosun dynastry.
We need the study on Guinsa and Sangwol to derive from the study of the Cheontae Order. A denomination has its own dogma that is different from other denominations. The doctrine, the teachings from the great master, is built on as an orthodox. The Cheontae Order was passed on from Nāgārjuna of India to Zhi-yi(智顗), Zhi-li(知禮) of China and Uicheon(義天) and Yose(了世) of Goryeo Dynasty. Moreover, it must be studies that Sangwol overcame the gap in history and praised the doctrine and spirit of through the succession of the culture of Cheontae. These research data need to be archived and a new platform is required for the devotees who dedicated to the order. Therefore, in this paper, I explicated the need for creating denominational contents and agenda and building a big data of the performances.
