전통 상단예불의 음악적 특징 고찰 - 조계종과 태고종을 중심으로 - (A study on the Musical Characteristics of Traditional-Sangdanyebul - Focusing on the Jogye Order and Taego Order -)

초록

본고에서는 20세기 초․중반까지 대웅전에서 조․석으로 봉행되었던 오분향례와 향수해례를 함께 다루어 전통 상단예불의 음악적 특징을 살펴보았다. 이 연구를 위해 조계종과 태고종의 전통 예불의식에 대한 현황을 조사하였으며, 한국불교 의례서를 검토하여 비교․분석하였고 이를 토대로 전통예불의 음악적 특징을 고찰했다. 연구 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다.
전통 예불의식에 대한 현황을 조사한 결과, 조계종 종단의 25교구 본사에서 오분향례는 현재 설행되지 않았고, 향수해례는 3곳에서 설행되고 있었다. 태고종의 28교구 종무원도 조계종과 크게 다르지 않았으며, 오분향례와 향수해례를 각각 2곳에서 설행하였다. 다만 태고종 종단인 봉원사에서는 두 예불을 모두 설행하였지만, 오분향례는 평상시와 하안거 기간의 아침․저녁 그리고 동안거 기간의 저녁예불에 올렸고, 향수해례는 동안거 기간의 새벽예불에만 올렸다. 다음으로 한국불교의례의 일상의례집 검토와 전통 예불의식의 구성․절차를 비교․분석한 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다.
『승가일용시식묵언작법』에는 ‘예불절차’ 이외에 별다른 제명(題名)이 없었고 <보례게>․진언․정례로 구성되어 있으며, 『석문의범』의 오분향례는 <보례게>와 진언이 사라지고 <오분향게>와 <헌향진언>이 새로이 시설되었다. 향수해례는 『승가일용시식묵언작법』의 제명이 ‘향수해’이고 내용은 정례만 있을 뿐이지만, 『석문의범』의 ‘향수해례’는 <다게>와 회향․발원이 추가 시설되었다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 오분향례와 향수해례의 정례만큼은 전통 의례집과 비교해 볼 때 유사성이 매우 높았다. 다음으로 음악적 특징에 대한 연구 결과를 종합하면 다음과 같다.
오분향례는 <오분향게>․<헌향진언>․정례로 구성되며 악조는 메나리토리이다. 정례의 특징적인 선율구조는 la를 중심음으로 내드름을 숙여낸 후 완전 5도 상행하여 최고음 mi'로부터 하행한는 점과 종지선율 do'-re'-do'-la-sol–mi-la-la인 점을 들 수 있다. 향수해례의 구성과 내용은 두 가지 유형으로 전승되고 있었다. 첫째는 <다게>․정례이고, 둘째는 <오분향게>․<헌향진언>․정례이며, 악조는 모두 메나리토리이다. 주목되는 점은 오분향례①과 향수해례⑦의 정례가 엄연히 다른 예불문임에도 불구하고 선율구조가 매우 흡사하여 마치 같은 선율에 다른 예불문을 얹어 부른 것과 같았고, 월정사②와 해인사④도 이와 매우 닮았다. 따라서 오분향례①와 향수해례②④⑦의 정례가 동일한 선율구조이었을 가능성이 매우 높아 애초에 한 곡이었을 것으로 추정된다.
한편 오분향례의 가창방식은 독창으로 전승되고 있었지만, 향수해례는 크게 2가지 방식이 전승되고 있었다. 1인의 선창자와 대중의 후창자가 두 패로 나뉘어 1인이 선창하면 선․후창이 제창하는 방식과 1인이 선창하면 대중의 후창이 일정한 간격을 두고 같은 사설을 따라 부르는 방식으로 전승되고 있었다. 가창방식은 주최 측의 사정에 따라 변화 가능할 것으로 생각되지만, 보다 전통적인 방식은 후자인 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

To consider the musical characteristics of traditional- Sangdanyebul in Korean Buddhism, this study aims to examine both Obunhyangrye and Hyangsuhaerye carried out in Daewoong-jeon morning and evening up to the mid-1900’s. To address the goal, this researcher has investigated the status of traditional-yebul rituals in the Jogye Order and Taego Order, analyzed the collections of rituals in Korean Buddhism comparatively, and considered the musical characteristics of traditional-Sangdanyebul based on that. The results of this study can be summed up as below: According to the results of examining the status of performing traditional-yebul rituals, the Jogye sect’s 25 parish head offices are not carrying out Obunhyangrye presently, but three are carrying out Hyangsuhaerye. The Taego sect’s 28 parish governing synods are not very different from the Jogye sect’s, and Obunhyangrye and Hyangsuhaerye are being carried out by two places respectively. Although Bongwonsa Temple, an order of the Taego sect, is carrying out the two traditional-yebul both, it has been found that recognition on traditional-yebul rituals is low in the circles of Buddhism.
Also, according to the results of examining the collections of rituals in Korean Buddhism, this author has learned that the two collections of rituals are different in terms of yebul rituals’ organizations and contents. In 『Seunggailyongsisigmukeonjakbeop』, no other titles are found than ‘Yebul Procedure’, and it consists of <Boryege>-Jineon-jeongrye. About Obunhyangrye in 『Seokmunuibeom』, <Boryege> and Jineon are deleted, and <Obunhyangge> and <Heonhyangjineon> are newly added. In Hyangsuhaerye, the title of 『Seunggailyongsisigmukeonjakbeop』 is ‘Hyangsuhae’, and the contents are only about Jeongrye; however, it has been found that In ‘Hyangsuhaerye’ of 『Seokmunuibeom』, <Dage> and Hoehyang․Balwon are newly added. but, Jeongrye of Obunhyangrye and Hyangsuhaerye are very similar in terms of the two collections of rituals. Next, the results of musical characteristics can be summarized as follows: Obunhyangrye consists of <Obunhyangge>․<Heonhyangjineon>․Jeongrye, and its mode is menaritori. The melodic structure of Jeongrye is characterized by that with the major tone, la, naedeureum goes upward, and then, it ascends as the perfect fifth and then descends from the treble, mi', and also the ending melody consists of do'-re'-do'-la-sol–mi-la-la. Regarding the organizations and contents of Hyangsuhaerye, two different types of transmission were found. The first type is <Dage>․Jeongrye, and the second is <Obunhyangge>-<Heonhyangjineon>-Jeongrye, and the modes are both menaritori. What is noticeable is that the Jeongrye of Obunhyangrye① and Hyangsuhaerye⑦ are very similar in terms of their melodic structure although yebulmun is obviously different. It is almost like singing different yebulmun put on the same melody. Woljeongsa Temple② and Haeinsa Temple④ are also very similar to this. The Jeongrye of Obunhyangrye① and hyangsuhaerye②④⑦ must have taken the same melodic structure; therefore, they must have been a single song in the beginning. Meanwhile, the singing of Obunhyangrye was as a solo whereas that of Hyangsuhaerye was transmitted largely in two different ways. There are two groups; one is a single person who is the lead, and the other is the people who follow the lead. The first way is that one person sings the lead as a solo, and then the lead and follow are sung in unison. The second way is that one person’s lead and then the people’s follow are sung in some fixed intervals to sing the same Saseol. The rituals may differ according to the account of the sponsoring party; however, it seems that the latter one should have been a more traditional way out of the two.
