다문화 서사에 나타난 초국적 이주와 고향의 의미 : 조선족 소재 소설을 중심으로 (Transnational Migration and the Meaning of Hometown in Multicultural Narrative: Focusing on Korean‒Chinese Motif Novels)

초록

현대인은 국경을 넘는 초국적 이주가 빈번한 시대에 살고 있다. 이는 그만큼 고향을 떠나는 탈향민이 급증하고, 인간에게 실존의 조건인 고향을 잃은 실향민이 급증하고 있다는 말이기도 하다. 21세기 초국적 이주의 현실을 담아내는 한국의 다문화 소설은 이런 국경을 넘어온 실향민들의 애환이 고스란히 담겨 있다.
다문화 소설 속 이방인들 중 조선족 이주민들에게 고향의 의미는 더 심원하다. 한국에서 중국으로, 중국에서 다시 한국으로의 중첩된 이주의 경험 속에서 정체성 혼란을 겪으며 정착을 꿈꾸는 조선족들에게 한국은 끊임없이 고향을 그리워하게 만드는 불안한 공간이다. 이런 점에 주목하여 이 글에서는 조선족 소재 다문화 소설을 중심으로 소설이 ‘고향’의 문제를 얘기하는 방식을 살펴보고, 더불어 초국적 이주의 시대에 고향의 의미가 무엇인지 고찰해보았다.
소설 속에서 존재의 불안을 겪는 조선족들은 고향에서의 아름다웠던 추억들을 떠올리며 위안을 받는다. 또한 조선족들은 고향으로 여겼던 한국에서의 심한 냉대로 정체성 갈등을 겪으며, 자신들만의 새로운 정체성을 형성해갈 것임을 보여준다. 한편, 조선족들은 불안한 한국에서 제2의 고향을 꿈꾸기도 한다. 이주 과정에서 문화적 혼종을 경험하고 함께 어우러져 살아본 경험을 바탕으로 그들이 생각하는 고향을 실현해가며 한국에서 정착해보려는 야심찬 꿈을 꾸기도 한다.
이렇듯 다문화 서사는 초국적 이주의 시대에 고향을 잃고 불안하게 살아갈 수밖에 없는 수많은 이주민의 애환을 보여준다. 이때 소설 속에서 반복적으로 환기되는 고향의 이미지는 특정 공간이라기보다는 현대인들이 상상하는 보편적인 원형 공간으로서의 고향의 이미지이다. 이런 다문화 서사는 고향을 잃은 실향민의 관점에서 이방인들의 존재 방식을 사유하게 한다.

영어초록

Now, modern people live in a time when transnational migrations across borders are frequent. This suggests that the number of deceased people leaving their hometowns is increasing rapidly, and that the number of people who lost their hometown, which is a condition of existence, is rapidly increasing. The multicultural narrative of Korea, which portray the reality of transnational migration in the 21st century, are filled with the emotions of those who have crossed the border.
Among the strangers in the multicultural narrative, the meaning of the hometown is more deeply felt for the Korean‒Chinese. The Korean‒Chinese is confused by the experience of overlapping migration from Korea to China and back to Korea. In the meantime, Korea is an uneasy space that makes the Korean‒Chinese to miss their hometowns constantly. Focusing on this point, this study examines the way in which novels address the problem of ‘hometown’, focusing on multicultural novels in the Korean‒Chinese, and examines what the meaning of hometown is in the era of transnational migration.
The Korean‒Chinese who are suffering from anxiety of existence in novels are often comforted by reminding them of their identities and the beautiful memories of their hometowns. In addition, the Korean‒Chinese experience a serious identity struggle, seeing Koreans who view themselves as negative in Korea. Since then, the Korean‒Chinese have shown that they will form their own new identity. On the other hand, the Korean‒Chinese who can not find their hometown in Korea and are anxious are also dreaming of their second home in Korea. Based on their experiences of cultural hybridization and living together in the process of migration, the Korean‒Chinese have an ambitious dream to settled in Korea by realizing their hometown.
Thus, the multicultural narrative reveals the emotions of many migrants who are forced to live in an anxious state by losing their hometown in the era of transnational migration. At this time, the image of the hometown that is repeatedly circulated in novels is not a specific space but rather an image of hometown as a universal archetype space imagined by modern people. This multicultural narrative makes us think about the way the strangers exist from the perspective of the displaced who lost their homeland. It also makes people think of the meaning of their hometown even for the modern people who have lost their original hometown.
