몽골족과 헨티 산맥 (Mongolian and the Henti Mountains)

초록

몽골리아의 동북부에 위치하는 헨티 산맥은 북쪽의 바이칼 지역, 동쪽의 興安嶺과 더불어 몽골리아를 감싸는 광활한 삼림지대를 형성하고 있는 몽골의 대표적인 산이다. 산을 신성시한 몽골족은 산과 불가분의 관계를 가지고 있다. 흥안령을 기반으로 활동했던 몽골족의 선조인 몽올실위가 서쪽으로 이동해 안착한 곳은 부르칸 칼둔으로 현재의 헨티 산맥을 가리킨다. 그런데 몽올실위의 원거주지인 흥안령 일대와 이동한 몽올실위가 거주한 부르칸 칼둔은 지리적 특성상 유사한 점이 매우 많다. 흥안령 일대의 에르구네 쿤 지역이 빽빽한 삼림지대라는 점과 주변의 쿨룬 부이르 초원으로 둘러싸여 있었기 때문에 이 일대에서 몽올 실위가 주로 수렵과 목축을 위주로 활동했다. 그런데 몽올 실위가 텡기스를 건너 도달한 부르칸 칼둔 역시 삼림지역과 초원이 교차하는 지역이다. 부르칸 칼둔이 흥안령 일대와 매우 유사한 생태 환경을 가졌던 것은 자연환경의 절대적 영향을 받을 수밖에 없었던 당시의 생산 구조적 상황에서 보면 당연한 일이었을 것이다.
한편, 헨티 산맥은 몽골족의 정체성을 형성시킨 聖山일 뿐만 아니라 칭기스칸에게는 각종 위험으로부터 보호해 준 가장 좋은 도피처였다. 동족인 타이치우드족으로부터 버림받은 칭기스칸 일족은 헨티 산맥으로 숨어 들어가 생활해야했고, 포로로 잡힌 칭기스칸이 타이치우드족의 방심을 틈타 도망친 곳 역시 헨티 산맥의 부르칸 칼둔이었다. 부르칸 칼둔이 주는 혜택을 기반으로 기세를 회복한 칭기스칸은 케레이트부족의 옹칸을 찾아가 주종관계를 맺음으로써 비로소 정상적인 생활을 할 수 있었다. 그러나 메르키트부족의 습격으로 위기를 겪게 된 칭기스칸은 다시 한 번 헨티 산맥으로 도피해야만 했다. 부르칸 칼둔으로 찾아든 칭기스칸은 목숨을 건질 수 있었다. 부르칸 칼둔 덕분에 목숨을 구했다고 생각한 칭기스칸은 부르칸 칼둔에게 경의를 표하면서 부르칸 칼둔에 제사 지내게 된다. 부르칸 칼둔은 몽골족의 성산으로 몽골인들이 추앙하는 산이었으나, 칭기스칸 때에 이르면 여러 차례 칭기스칸을 위험으로부터 구해준 생명의 은인이 됨으로써 신격화되고 있음을 볼 수 있다.
칭기스칸은 부르칸 칼둔을 大禁區로 지정하고 최후에는 자신의 매장지로 부르칸 칼둔을 선택했다. 칭기스칸은 부르칸 칼둔을 대금구로 지정해 외부인의 출입을 금지시킴으로써 부르칸 칼둔을 성스러운 땅으로 격리했다. 칭기스칸의 명령에 따라 몽골족의 성지 부르칸 칼둔은 몽골 황실 바깥의 외부인들에게 접근을 허락하지 않았다.
부르칸 칼둔 즉, 헨티 산맥은 흥안령 일대에서 이주한 몽골족의 선조들의 새로운 거주지로 정해진 이래 몽골족이 정체성을 형성하고 몽골제국을 건국하는 중요한 기틀로서 역할을 하고 있다. 게다가 부르칸 칼둔은 칭기스칸에게는 생활의 터전인 동시에 그의 생명을 구해준 장소가 되는 특별한 위치로 자리매김하게 되었다. 결국 부르칸 칼둔은 칭기스칸 일족의 매장지로써 영원히 칭기스칸과 함께하는 성스러운 장소가 되었다.

영어초록

A review has been made about the influence that was exerted on the historical players in this area as provided by the space of the Henti Mountains, the Monglolian holy mountains. The conclusion as derived from the above discussions are summarized as in the following:Holding mountains sacred, Mongolians were in an inseparable relationship with mountains. The place where a Mongolian ancestor Monolsilwei, who was active on the basis of the Hinganling, went to the west and settled down safely was Burqan Qaldun, the current Henti Mountains. However, a number of similarities existed between the Hinganling region of Monolsilwei's original residence and Burqan Qaldun where Monolsilwei moved in and dwelt. Since the Ergune Qun area of the Hinganling region was a dense forest while the surrounding Kulun Buir was enclosed by grasslands, Monolsilwei's activities in this area were mostly for hunting and stock-farming. On the other hand, the area of Burqan Qaldun, where Monolsilwei arrived after crossing the Tengis, is also a similar region with forests and grasslands inter-crossed. In view of the production's structural situation which was inevitably subject to the absolute impact of the natural environment in those days, it seems to be quite natural that the Burqan Qaldun's environment would be very similar to that of the Hinganling area.
Meanwhile, the Henti Mountains were not only the holy mountains that had formed the identity of Mongolians, but also were one of the best refuges for Chinghis to protect himself from various dangers. Abandoned by his own tribe of the Taichiwood, Chinghis and his followers had to hide themselves and live in Burqan Qaldun of the Henti Mountains, where captured Chinghis had once escaped at the opportunity of the Taichiwood's inattention as well. Recovering his vigor on the basis of benefitting from Burqan Qaldun, Chinghis could eventually secure a normal living after calling on Ongqan of the Kereit tribe and establishing a master-servant relationship with him. However, experiencing the crisis caused by an attack from the Merkit tribe, Chinghis had to escape into the Henti Mountains once again. Chinghis could save his life after getting into Burqan Qaldun. With the thought that his life could only be saved by the existence of Burqan Qaldun, Chinghis became to hold memorial services expressing his respect to Burqan Qaldun. Burqan Qaldun was a highly respected mountain as a holy mountain of Mongolians, however, it can be seen that, entering the Chinghis' era, Burqan Qaldun became apotheosized as the savior of Chinghis' life, which was known to have saved Chinghis' life for several times from danger.
Furthermore, Chinghis designated Burqan Qaldun as a Great Restriction Area and selected it as the place for his burial. Chinghis isolated Burqan Qaldun as a sacred land by designating it as a Great Restriction Area where no outsiders were ever allowed to enter. Following the order of Chinghis, access to Burqan Qaldun was not allowed to anyone that falls outside of the Chinghis's imperial family.
Consequently, Burqan Qaldun, or the Henti Mountains, is seen to have been playing the role of being the important framework for Mongolians to form their identity and the Mongolian empire ever since this area had been settled down as residential area by the Mongolian ancestors who had moved from the Hinganling region. Moreover, Burqan Qaldun became to be positioned especially to emerge as not only the living base of Chinghis but his life-saving place as well. At last, Burqan Qaldun has come to be a sacred place that everlasts with Chinghis forever as the graveyard of the Chinghis' family.
