조극선 일기를 통해 본 17세기 지식인의 師弟觀 ‘숨김과 드러냄’ (Perspectives on Teacher-Pupil Relations among 17th Century Intellectuals as Examined through the Diaries of Jo Geuksun: Hiding and Revealing)

초록

이 글은 17세기 호서지역의 학자․관료 조극선의 일기 『인재일록(忍齋日錄)』 및 『야곡일록(冶谷日錄)』의 분석을 통해 조선후기 사림계 인사의 사제관의 실상을 조명하는데 초점이 있다. 조극선은 일생 이영원(李榮元)․이명준(李命俊)․박지계(朴知誡)․조익(趙翼) 등 모두 네 명의 스승에게 수학하였는데, 이 글은 ‘숨김’과 ‘드러냄’의 관점을 적용하여 두 사람과의 관계 해명에 주안점을 두었다. 전자의 주요 분석 대상은 이영원(李榮元:龍溪)이고, 후자는 이명준(李命俊:潛窩)이다.
조극선은 자신의 소년기 스승이었던 이영원의 존재를 숨기려했고, 종국에 가서는 사제관계를 부정했다. 이유는 간단했다. 이영원의 ‘문벌(門閥)’과 ‘학문(學問)’이 그의 기대에 미치지 못했기 때문이다. 이것은 이영원이 자신의 학자․관료적 성장에 도움이 되지 않는다는 판단[계산], 즉 이(利)의 작동이었다. 17세기는 의리(義理)와 명분(名分)의 시대로 일컬어지지만 어떤 이념도 인간의 이해(利害)를 원천적으로 통제할 수 없음을 보여준다.
반면 이명준은 부모 및 임금과 동급으로 인식되어 극존의 예우를 받았다. 우선 그는 서울의 문벌가문 출신에다 우계문하(牛溪門下)에서 수학하여 기호학의 정통을 이었고, 문과에도 장원한 엘리트였기 때문이다. 여기에 더해 이명준은 성품이 개결한데다 학자적 진지함을 잃지 않음으로써 그 시대가 선망하는 스승의 표본에 가까웠다. 조극선의 잠와문하 입문 또한 이(利)의 작동이라 할 수 있지만 그것의 지속성은 의리적 투합 위에서 기능했다. 이것은 이(利)와 의(義)의 적절한 섞임이 관계성의 유지를 담보하는 구실이 됨을 의미한다. 이 글은 미화의 혐의로부터 자유로울 수 없는 조선시대 사상사 연구에 대한 작은 반성에서 출발했다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to gain an accurate understanding of the pupil-teacher relations among intellectuals of the Sarim school during the late Joseon period, by analyzing Injaeillok (忍齋日錄) and Yagogillok (冶谷日錄), which were journals kept by Cho Guekseon, an official and member of the literati in the 17thcentury.Throughouthislife,ChoGeukseonstudiedunderfourteachers:LeeYeongwon,LeeMyeongjun,ParkJigyeandChoIk.ThispaperaimstoelucidatetherelationsbetweenChoGeukseonandhisteachersfromthedualperspectivesoftheconceptsofhidingandrevealing.TheanalyticalfocusoftheformeristherelationshipbetweenChoGeukseonandLeeYeongwon(pennameYonggye),whilethelatterfocusesonhimandLeeMyeongjun(pennameJamwa).
Cho Geukseon tried hide his connection to Lee Yeongwon as his teacher during his adolescent years, and ultimately denied their teacher-pupil relationship itself. The reason was rather simple: Lee Yeongwon’s lineage and scholarship fell short of his expectations. Cho came to the conclusion that Lee Yeongwon was not beneficial to his growth as a scholar and an official. What mattered to him was his own interests (利). This illustrates that, although the 17thcenturyisreferredtoasthe“EraofLoyaltyandCause,”noideologycouldcontrolthefundamentalinterestsofhumanbeings.
Meanwhile, Lee Myeongjun was honored by Cho Geukseon to an extent rivalling his parents or the king. First of all, Lee Myeongjun was of high birth from a prestigious family in the capital of Joseon, studied under Woogye as an authentic successor of the Kiho school, and was an elite member of the literati who won first place in the state civil service examination. In addition, he was a man of integrity and upheld his scholastic gravitas, representing the image of an ideal teacher in this era. Cho Geukseon’s decision to become a pupil of Jamwa was doubtlessly influenced by his personal interests. His sustained relationship with his teacher, however, had its basis on shared values. This implies that an appropriate intersection of personal interests (利) and moral values (義) ensured the continuation of the relationship. This paper began from a modest reflection on the research on the intellectual history of Joseon, a field susceptible to accusations of beautification.
