초록

본 연구의 목적은 백두산정계비 건립을 전·후하여 치러진 두 차례의 국경회담을 통한 조선과 청나라 간의 국경정계 교섭과정을 조사·분석하고, 이를 토대로 당시 조선인들의 북방영토의식과 사상적 배경을 규명하는 것이었다. 연구대상을 조·청 국경정계 교섭과정으로 한정하였고, 연구범위로서 시간적으로는 1712년 백두산정계비 건립 전으로부터 국경회담 개최후까지로, 공간적으로는 조선과 청나라로, 내용적으로는 당시 조선인들의 북방영토의식과 사상적 배경을 규명하는 것으로 한정하였다. 연구의 접근방법은 역사적 접근방법을, 조사방법은 문헌조사법을, 분석방법은 기술적(記述的) 분석방법을 사용하였다.
연구 결과, 첫째, 조선과 청은 국경문제 해결을 위한 두 차례의 국경회담을 거치면서, 정계(定界)의 내용과 의미를 재검토하여야 했다. 둘째, 당시 조선인들은 영토주권을 인식하고, 이를 확보하려는 실천적 의식을 갖고 있었다. 셋째, 북방영토에 대한 지리정보의 축적과 이에 따른 근대적 영토의식의 성장과 변화는 훗날 조·청간의 국경문제에 대한 우리의 사상적 배경으로 작용한 것으로 나타났다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the border demarcation negotiation process held in 2 border meetings between the Choson and Chung before and after the establishment of Mt. Baikdu Demarcation Stone, and to investigate the Choson people's awareness on northen territory and ideological background at that time. The target of the study was limited to the border demarcation negotiation process between the Choson and Chung. The time scope of the study was limited from before the establishment of Mt. Baikdu Demarcation Stone in 1712 to after the organization of the border meeting. The spacial scope of the study was limited to the Choson and Chung. Its contents were limited to investigating the Choson people's awareness on northen territory and ideological background at that time. This study adopted historical approach method, and as for the investigation, literature investigation method was used. As for the analysis, descriptive analysis method was used.
As a result of the study, it was found that the Choson and Chung had to reexamine the contents and meanings of demarcation through 2 border meetings conducted for resolving the border problem. Second, the Choson people at that time understood their territorial sovereignty and had the practical awareness to secure it. Third, the accumulation of geographical information of northern territory and the growth and changes of modern territory awareness have later become our ideological background for the border problem between the Choson and Chung.
