북한 기록영화의 서사구조에 내재된 이항대립 이데올로기 (Ideology of binary opposition within the narrative structure of North Korean documentary films)

초록

본 연구에서는 북한 기록영화의 서사구조 내의 특정 맥락에서 사용된 기표가 어떤 ‘가치’를 갖는지를 파악하여, 텍스트에 존재하는 기표들과 부재하는 기표들을 비교하여 그 선택의 이데올로기적 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다. 분석결과, 북한 기록영화의 서사구조는 크게 <우리(선) : 그들(악)>의 이항대립을 지니고 있다. 이러한 대립구조는 대립항의 약한 고리를 집중적으로 공략하여 자신의 위치를 끌어올리고 관객의 공감을 불러일으키는 효과를 준다. 또한 숨겨진 이항대립항에서는 조선혁명의 복잡성과 지속성을 강조하며 사회 내부의 적을 타도할 것을 역설하고 있다. 이러한 이원대립항에 부정적 가치와 긍정적 가치를 각각 할당함으로써 미제를 타도하자는 명확한 시대정신을 배태하고 있다. 북한은 정권초기에 새로 탄생한 젊은 국가의 비전을 알리고, 미제를 타도할 새로운 이항대립항으로 설정하고, 인민들을 새 조국건설의 주체로 호명한다. 갑산파 숙청 이후에는 외부적 요소보다는 수령형상 창조를 강조하면서 유일체제 확립을 위해 대중적 방어진지를 구축하는 데 역점을 두고 있다. 그리고 고난의 시기를 거치면서 다시 악의 근원을 미제로 돌리고 인민들을 사회주의 체제수호의 전사로 호명하고 있다. 이와 같이 북한은 기록영화를 통해 헤게모니를 재생산하는 주요한 진지중의 하나를 구축해가며, 이를 활용해오고 있다. 다시 말해 정권 초기에는 기록영화를 통해 새로운 진지를 구축하기 위해 노력했다면, 이후에는 내부 결속을 위한 진지로의 변화를 꾀하였고, 선군 시대에 들어서면서 사회주의 체제를 끝까지 지키겠다는 새로운 형태의 진지를 구축한 것이다

영어초록

This study identifies the value of the signifiers used in certain contexts within the narrative structure of North Korean documentary films, and examines the ideological meaning behind such choices, comparing the signifiers in the text with those that are absent from the text. The results of the analysis show that the narrative structure of North Korean documentary films carries the binary opposition of “us (good) vs. them (evil).” This type of binary structure attacks the weak link between the opposites, thereby raising the narrator’s own position as well as evoking the sympathy of the audience. The hidden binary opposition thereby emphasizes the complexity and the durability of the Chosun revolution, stressing the destruction of internal enemies. By assigning negative and positive values to each side of the binary opposition, a clear attitude in favor of defeating the U.S. is disseminated. Early in the regime, North Korea expressed the young country’s vision, setting up the U.S. as a new opponent to topple, and interpellates its people on the subject of the new fatherland’s construction. After the purge of the Gapsan faction, the creation of the great leader was stressed, and emphasis was put on building a defensive position for the public in order to establish a one-party state. As the country experienced the Arduous March, the U.S. was reemphasized as the root of evil, and the people were interpellated as the guardians of the socialist regime. As such, North Korea is using documentary films to reproduce hegemony, and has established these films as one of the main positions necessary for maintaining the regime. In other words, during the early days of the regime, North Korea took efforts to establish a new position—i.e., documentary films. The country later attempted to change this to a position for internal solidarity; as it entered the “military-first” era, the country took a new position that vowed to protect the communist regime until the end.
