갈릴레오 사건: 교회와 과학자 집단 간 갈등의 시발점 (The Galileo Affair: The Starting Point of Conflicts between the Church and the Scientist Community)

초록

갈릴레오 사건은 지동설을 강력히 지지하던 갈릴레오 갈릴레이(Galileo Galilei, 1564-1642)에게 총 두 차례(1616년, 1633년) 가톨릭 교회의 검사성성이 행한 종교 재판 및 공식적인 단죄를 포함한 일련의 역사적 사건을 일컫는다. 두 차례의 종교 재판은 갈릴레오의 신앙 문제가 아니라 그의 과학적 발견들과 해석들을 성경 및 신학의 잣대를 들이대어 판단, 단죄한 재판으로 비추어져 왔기 때문에, 이 사건은 갈릴레오 사후에 교회와 과학자 집단 간 갈등의 씨앗이 되는 첫 번째 중대 사건으로서 받아들여지고 있다.
본고는 이 갈릴레오 사건에 대해 여러 중요 자료들을 면밀히 검토하여 그 사건이 일어나기 전의 과학적, 시대적 상황들과 1613년부터 1633년까지의 일련의 과정들 전반에 대해 연대기적으로 자세히 소개하였다. 특히 이 과정들 중에서 특별한 위치를 차지하는 두 가지 글인 『벨라르미노 추기경이 포스카리니에게 보낸 답신』과 갈릴레오의 『크리스티나 공작부인에게 보내는 편지』를 자세히 분석해 보았다.
아울러 이 사건 전반에 담겨있는 주요 쟁점들을 자세히 살펴보았다. 우선 갈릴레오 사건이 비극적으로 마무리가 된 결정적인 이유인 ‘교회 교도권의 권위를 갈릴레오가 무시･손상했다는 혐의’를 분석하였다. 하지만 그러한 전통적인 견해와는 전혀 다른 각도에서 20세기의 저명한 과학철학자들이 갈릴레오 사건에 대해 해석한 내용들도 역시 제시하였다. 이들에 따르면, 갈릴레오 사건은 실재론을 지지한 갈릴레오와 반실재론의 입장에 있었던 교회 교도권 간의 과학적 입장차에서 비롯된 사건이었다. 특히 20세기의 대표적인 반실재론자인 파울 파이어아벤트에 따르면, 사실 갈릴레오 사건은 지동설을 가설로서 ‘올바르게’ 받아들인 반실재론자 집단인 교회와 그것을 진리로서 ‘고집스럽게’ 주장한 실재론자 과학자 간의 관점의 차이에 의해 발생된 예기치 못한 결과인 것이며, 필자 역시 이 견해에 동의하는 바이다.
따라서 교회와 과학자 집단 간의 갈등의 시발점이었으며 그동안 교회를 비과학적이고 비이성적이며 편협한 집단으로 격하시키는 데에 역사적으로 지대한 영향을 끼친 일종의 ‘신화’인 갈릴레오 사건의 ‘탈신화화’를 위해 이제는 교회 차원에서 적극적으로 노력해야 할 때임을 본고는 강조한다.

영어초록

The Galileo Affair refers to a series of historical incidents, including the Inquisition and the formal punishments twice(1616 and 1633) issued by the Congregatio Sanctae Inquisitionis of Catholic Church to Galileo Galilei(1564-1642), who was a strong supporter of the Copernican heliocentrism. Since the two Inquisitions seemed to be unfair trials, which did not deal with any problem on his faith but judged and punished his scientific discoveries and interpretations from the viewpoints of holy scripture and theology. the Affair has been accepted as the starting point of conflicts between the Church and scientist community groups until now.
By reviewing several important documents, the present work introduced some scientific and historical background issues and a series of incidents from 1613 to 1633 chronologically in detail. Especially, it was analyzed that the two addresses placed in unique positions for the Affair, i.e., Correspondence of Cardinal Bellarmine to Foscarini and Galileo’s Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina.
The present work also reviewed the central issues on the Affair. Primarily, it was examined closely that the decisive reason for the tragic ending of the Affair, i.e., ‘the suspicion that he ignored or damaged the authority of the Church’. It was also presented that another issue which was interpreted and suggested by some eminent philosophers of science from totally different angles with the traditional view on the Affair: according to them, the Affair was originated from the difference of scientific viewpoints between two groups, i.e., Galileo, follower of the (naive) realism, and Cardinal Bellarmine and Urban Ⅷ, supporters of the anti-realism. Especially, according to Paul Feyerabend, the dominant anti-realist in the 20th century, the Affair was not a simple and unfair persecution toward a good scientist by the Church, the power group of the period. Instead, in fact, it was an unexpected accident occurred by the difference of viewpoints between the Church who accepted the Copernican system as a hypothesis ‘rightly’ and a scientist who asserted it as a scientific truth ‘stubbornly’. I also agree with his assertion.
Therefore, the present work stresses that the ‘Galileo Affair’, was not only the starting point of conflicts between the Church and scientist community, but also a kind of ‘myth’ which has had a historically serious effect on degrading the Church as an unscientific, irrational and narrow-minded community, should be ‘demythologized’ by active endeavor of the Church.
