초록

현재 서울대학교 중앙도서관 고문헌자료실에는 1928년부터 1940년까지 제국 일본의 판도에서 발간되었던 70여종의 신문에서 106,000여 건의 신문 기사를 발췌하여 정리한 ‘新聞切拔’이라는 자료가 소장되어 있다. 이는 경성제대의 연구 기관에서 연구를 위한 자료로서 수집·정리된 것이기 때문에 그 구성과 포함하고 있는 신문기사의 추이를 통해 학문적 관심의 변화와 연구 자료의 획득처를 확인할 수 있다. 그런데 이 자료는 제작 시기나 분량의 방대함에 비해 이에 관한 관련 기록은 거의 없는 실정이다. 이 논문은 이를 누가 정리했으며, 그 기본적인 특징이 무엇인가에 대한 것이다.
新聞切拔과 관련해서 현재 확인되는 것은 그것이 경성제대 부속도서관에 있었으며, ‘法文學部 法學科 附屬資料室’에서 관리하고 있었다는 것 정도이다. 新聞切拔은 ‘朝鮮關係’, ‘滿洲關係’, ‘國際關係’, ‘政治關係’, ‘支那關係’, ‘書評’, ‘學藝’라는 총 7개의 대주제 하위에 수많은 소주제로 분류되어 있다. 그런데 소주제 분류는 통일되지 않은 채 해마다 변동되며 분류 항목 간에 중복이 많다. 이는 新聞切拔이 어느 한 기관에서 제작한 것이 아니라는 것을 말해 준다. 단 제작 시점, 당시 附屬資料室의 자료 관리 실태, 경제·산업 관련 주제에 대한 집중, 신문을 정리할 수 있는 인력의 확보 등의 측면을 고려할 때 경성제대 법문학부 법학과에 속해 있던 朝鮮經濟硏究所(1928년 창립)가 그 제작에 깊게 관계했던 것으로 추정된다.
한편 만주사변 이후 新聞切拔은 큰 변화를 보인다. ‘滿洲關係’, ‘國際關係’, ‘政治關係’라는 새로운 대주제 분류가 등장할 뿐만이 아니라 기존의 ‘朝鮮關係’ 역시 기사량이 폭증함은 물론 만주, 일본, 대만 등지에서 발간된 신문의 활용이 두드러진다. 즉 양적 증가와 더불어 당시 제국 일본의 판도를 라 할 수 있는 지역에서 발간된 신문들(주로 일본어 신문)을 포괄하게 된 것이다. 이는 만주사변이 불러일으킨 학문적 관심의 확대와 경성제대의 학문적 지향의 변화를 반영한 것이다. 이는 식민지기 일본인 연구자들이 말했던 ‘朝鮮學’의 의미 변화, 당시 경성제대를 둘러싼 학계의 분위기, 만주사변 이후 대만과 조선에 대한 제국의 시각 등을 파악·비교하는 데에 단서가 될 수 있는 것이다. 또 분량은 적지만 각각 1,000여 건이 넘는 기사가 정리된 ‘書評’과 ‘學藝’는 최근 피어오르는 식민지기 학술사 연구와 관련하여 기여하는바 다대한 것이라고 하겠다.
이처럼 新聞切拔은 식민지기 제국의 學知를 연구하는데 있어 단서를 제공할 뿐만 아니라 새로운 자료의 보고이기도 하다. 특히 현재 소장 상황이 불분명하거나 한국에서 찾아보기 어려운 지방 신문들이나 만주 지역 발간 신문의 기사를 무수히 포함하고 있다. 이러한 점을 볼 때 新聞切拔은 기존의 연구를 수정·보완하는 근거이자 식민지기 지방사나 언론사 연구에도 많은 참고가 될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The Seoul National University Library has a massive body of materials called ‘Newspaper Scraps(新聞切拔)’, roughly 106,000 articles, which were selected and arranged from approximately 70 newspapers published under the Japanese imperialism from 1928 to 1940. Their organization and thematic trends can reveal the changes of scholarly interest and the sources of material since several research institutes of the Keijo Imperial University(KIU) were involved in collecting and editing them. At present, however, there remain scarcely any records relevant to them. The essay is about the editorship and basic features of these materials.
What is now confirmed is that they had been in the KIU library and managed by the reference room attached to its department of law-literature. The scraps were then divided into seven major topics(‘Joseon Affairs’, ‘Manchurian Affairs’, ‘International Affairs’, ‘Political Affairs’, ‘China Affairs’, ‘Book Review’, and ‘Art and Science’) and lots of minor topics. The minor topics are not consistent, changing yearly, and there is much overlapping among them, suggesting that it was not the case that they were arranged by one specific institute. Considering various aspects like the time of their production, the reference room’s conditions of data-management, the emphasis on economic and industrial topics, and personnel problems, it is highly probable that Joseon Economic Research Institute(朝鮮經濟硏究所), which had been founded in 1928 and belonged to the department of law-literature, took a leading part in producing them.
Meanwhile, the scraps underwent a large change after the Manchurian Incident. Not only categories like ‘Manchurian Affairs’, ‘International Affairs’, and ‘Political Affairs’ appeared for the first time in this period, but also the number of articles in the existing category ‘Joseon Affairs’ increased sharply, and the importance of the articles from the newspapers published in Manchuria, Japan, and Taiwan became remarkable. Along with an increase in quantity, the scraps came to cover the newspapers(mostly in Japanese language) published within the entire regional boundary of the Japanese imperialism. It reflected the expansion of scholarly interest and the change in the academic orientation of the KIU which the Manchurian Incident brought about. This circumstance can provide a significant clue to the understanding of the changes in meaning of ‘Joseon Studies’(朝鮮學) considered by Japanese scholars, the academic atmosphere of the KIU, and the Japanese imperialistic views on Taiwan and Joseon after the Manchurian Incident, and other issues. Comparatively small as they are in volume, the categories of ‘Book Review’ and ‘Art and Science’, over 1,000 articles respectively, can offer a promising opportunity to study a recently rising field, the academic history of the colonial period.
It is clear that the scraps give us a valuable chance to investigate the learning of the colonial empire, and in itself are a rich repository of new data. Especially, they include a vast amount of articles from local and Manchurian newspapers that it is now hard to find in Korea or about whose possession our information is very uncertain. All things considered, the scraps will function both as a useful ground for correcting and complementing the existing research and as a helpful reference for the studies of local history and history of media.
