가전체소설의 의미 재고－<화왕전>과 <화사>를 중심으로－ (Examination of the Significance of Gajeonche Novels － Centering around Hwawangjeon and Hwasa －)

초록

본 논문은 가전체소설이라는 용어가 작품의 면밀한 분석이 아닌 문학사를 기술하는 과정에서 설정된 용어라는 문제의식 아래, 가전체소설의의미를 재고하여 그 특질을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 가전체소설은가전의 문법인 사물의 의인화와 전(傳)의 삼단구조를 계승하면서 소설화된 장르로 이해되어왔다. 하지만 가전의 형식은 『사기』가 전범이고, 가전체소설의 형식은 『서경』⋅『춘추』가 그 연원이다. 이는 한 사람의 일대기를 기록하는 가전과 한 시대 또는 사건의 시종(始終)을 기록하는 가전체소설의 근원적인 차이를 사사하는 것이다. 이에 본고에서는 가전체소설로 최초로 명명된 <화사>와 가전인 <화왕전>을 대상으로 분석하여 가전과 가전체소설의 거리를 살폈다. 형식적 차원에서 <화사>는 <화왕전>의 ‘인정기술-행적-평결’의 구조를 벗어나 ‘인정기술-행적⋅사평 → 평결’의 구조를 가지고 있음을 밝혔다. 그리고 내용면에서 <화왕전>은 화왕의 생사가 화국의 흥망에 대응되는 반면 <화사>에서 화왕의 죽음은 곧다른 화왕의 등장과 새 왕조의 탄생으로 이어져 ‘흥(興) → 망(亡) → 흥(興)’의 구조로 귀결됨을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같은 차이는 시간인식에서비롯된다고 보았다. 즉 가전은 시간의 유한성을, 가전체소설은 시간의연속성에 근거하는 것이다. 따라서 본고는 가전체소설이라는 용어 대신본기체소설이라는 용어를 제안한다. 본기체소설은 시간의 연속성, 통사적 역사의식을 내적 원리로 삼고, 형식적 차원에서는 의인화 기법⋅역사서술 방식⋅전고의 활용⋅가전의 인정기술 표현법 등을 사용하며 내용면에서는 제왕의 행적을 중심으로 그 나라의 문물제도를 다루면서 왕조의유지 및 교체의 문제를 이야기한다.

영어초록

This paper is aimed at examining the meaning of the so-called gajeonche novels (personified biographical novels) and figuring out its characteristics based on a critical perspective that the term “gajeonche novels” had been established in the process of describing the history of literature rather than as the outcome of a close and precise analysis of the works. Gajeonche novels have largely been understood as a fictionalized genre that had inherited the pattern of personification and biography. The original pattern of a biography form in the genre was modelled after that of the Records of History (Shǐjì; 史記) by the Han dynasty official Sima Qian and the novel form followed the style of the Book of Documents (Shujing; 書經) and the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu; 春秋). It shows that there existed a clear and fundamental distinction between a personified biography as the record of individuals and a personified biographical novel as the record of a period or big events. This paper, therefore, has analyzed Hwasa (A History of Flowers) known as the first gajeonche novel and Hwawang-jeon (A Story of Flower King) written in a biography form, and examined their differences in terms of style. In terms of patterns, Hwasa freed from the conventional pattern of “narration,” “tracks” and “Concluding” and followed the mode of “narration,” “tracks and Historical criticism” and “Concluding” In terms of contents, Hwawang-jeon depicts a story that the life and death of Flower King corresponds to the rise and fall of the Flower Kingdom. In Hwasa, however, the death of Flower King is followed by the appearance of another King and the birth of a new dynasty, thus following the pattern of “rise,” “fall” and “rise” Such differences were derived from the difference of the awareness of time. In other words, a biography is based on the finitude of time, while a gajeonche novel presupposes the continuity of time. Accordingly, this paper suggests the use of a new term bongiche novel rather than the time-honored gajeonche novel. The bongiche novel is fully based on the continuity of time and the syntactic awareness of history as its inner principle. In terms of pattern, the bongiche novel utilizes the personification and the technics of narrating history, and authentic precedents. In terms of contents, it deals with a country’s civilization and institutions with focus on the achievements of kings and explains the issue of the maintenance or the change of a dynasty.
