초록

본 연구는 해방 전 한국영화 기술에 대한 고찰과 영화제작에서의 기술 변화 고찰이 목적이다. 무성영화시대에서 발성영화시대로의 변화는 제작 시스템과 극장설비 등을 새로이 갖추어야 하는 영화계에서 정신적, 물리적으로 커다란 변화였고 기술적으로 대규모 혁신이었다. 그리고 1930년대 몇 편의 영화 흥행 성공으로 침체된 영화계에 새로운 활력과 일제하의 한국영화에 새로운 발전의 가능성을 제공해주었다.
한국영화 기술 발달의 시기는 먼저 1919년 ‘연쇄극’ <의리적 구토>가 상영되기 전까지를 영화의 도입과 기술 소개의 시기로 설정하고 있었다. 두 번째로 기술의 수준을 일정 수준 이상으로 끌어 올려야 하는 연쇄극 시대로 보고 있고 세 번째로는 본격적인 영화기술이 선보이는 무성영화의 시기, 네 번째로는 1935년부터 일제말기의 암흑시대 이전까지로 설정하였으며 마지막으로 1940년부터 해방 전까지를 퇴행기로 설정하고 있다. 이러한 측면에서 일제의 한국영화에 대한 정책들 속에 나타나고 있는 제작과 기술에 대한 부분과 일본과의 합작에 따른 새로운 제작기술 등의 유입 상황을 정리해야 할 것이다.
우리는 멀티미디어를 중심으로 한 디지털 첨단영상정보 시대를 살아가고 있다. 영화 영상 분야에서도 기본적인 카메라 장비를 포함하여 편집, 사운드, 극장설비 시스템 등에 디지털화가 상용화되고 있고 가속화 속도는 빛의 속도 이상을 달리고 있다. 네트워크를 통한 영상과 사운드의 전송 및 재생 기술 수준, 필름의 화질 재현 능력도 급속도로 발전하고 있으며 앞으로 디지털 영화와 더 나아가 3D영화는 필름이 갖고 있는 속성을 그대로 재현하려는 시도보다는 디지털의 미학적인 특성을 찾아 기존의 영상언어와 문법을 해체하고 재편성해야 ‘개혁과 혁신’이 가능할 것이다. 한국영화 기술사는 한국영화에서 이론적, 기술적 논의를 절대로 분리시킬 수가 없다. 한국영화 기술사는 한국영화를 이끌어가는 매우 중요한 견인차 역할을 담당하고 있다.
