<양풍전>의 조력 양상과 영웅화의 관계 고찰 (A Study on the Perspective of Assistance and its Relationship to the Process of Heroization in Yangpungjeon)

초록

<양풍전>은 양태백이 부인과 세 자녀를 학대하는 전반부의 내용과, 아들인 양풍이 군사적 능력을 배양한 뒤 국난을 타개하는 후반부의 내용이 병치되어 있다. 전반부의 사건은 ‘영웅의 일생’ 중에서 어린 시절의 시련에 해당하므로, 이것을 양풍이 영웅인물로 성장하기 위해 반드시 거쳐야 하는 과정으로 볼 수 있다. 가정 내 어려움을 딛고 어머니와 누이들, 초월적 존재의 도움을 통해 성장하는 영웅의 이야기인 것이다.
첫째, 어머니의 1차 조력을 통해 양풍은 어린 시절의 정서적·신체적 안정을 제공받고 영웅인물이 될 수 있었다. 양태백이 부인과 자녀들을 쫓아내려 하였을 때 양풍의 어머니는 이를 막기 위해 합리적인 근거를 들어 양태백의 결심을 무마하고자 하였다. 그리고 내쫓긴 후에도 자녀들을 안전하게 보호할 수 있는 곳이 어디인지 최선을 다해 찾으려 하였다.
둘째, 누이들의 2차 조력을 통해 양풍은 초월 공간에 도달하여 영웅인물의 면모를 인정받을 수 있었다. 어린 나이에 험난한 여정이 될 수밖에 없지만, 어머니를 만나겠다는 누이들의 굳은 결심으로 거침없이 나아간 결과 그들은 어머니를 상봉하고 비로소 시련에서 벗어날 수 있었다. 그뿐만 아니라 양풍은 모험의 과정에서 초월자에게 영웅성을 인정받는 단계로 진입할 수 있었다.
셋째, 초월적 존재의 3차 조력을 통해 양풍은 완벽한 영웅이 되었다. 옥황상제는 양풍에게 그 운명을 알리고 갑옷을 하사하였으며, 천황보살은 그를 제자로 삼아 운명을 실현할 수 있는 능력을 기를 수 있게 돕고 신이한 물건까지 제공하였다. 그리하여 양풍은 마침내 완전한 영웅으로 거듭날 수 있었다.
양풍이 세 차례에 걸친 도움으로 영웅인물이 되면서 지향한 것은 효의 실천이나 가문의 번창이 아니었다. 나라를 구한 후 부귀영화의 삶 속으로 들어온 것처럼 보이지만 아버지 사후에는 자신의 책임을 다하였으므로 지상의 삶에 미련을 두지 않는다. 양풍은 결국 어머니와 누이들을 다시 만나 선도를 닦으며 진정한 의미의 영웅에 이르고자 하는데 이것이 그가 지향한 궁극적 가치라고 말할 수 있다.

The novel Yangpungjeon encompasses two distinct sections: the initial part portrays Yang Taebaek's maltreatment of his wife and three children, while the latter part focuses on his son, Yangpung, who cultivates military prowess and endeavors to rectify national crises. The events depicted in the former section correspond to the formative tribulations of a hero's life, wherein Yangpung's arduous journey becomes imperative for his transformation into a heroic persona. It presents a narrative of an aspirational hero who, despite adversities within the familial domain, undergoes personal growth with the aid of his mother, sisters, and transcendental entities.
Firstly, through the initial assistance of his mother, Yangpung was able to receive emotional and physical stability during his early childhood years, which contributed to his development as a heroic figure. When Yang Taebaek attempted to drive away his wife and children, Yangpung's mother endeavored to thwart his intentions by presenting rational justifications to undermine Yang Taebaek's resolve. Furthermore, even after being expelled from their home, she made every effort to find a safe haven where she could protect her children.
Secondly, through the secondary assistance of his sisters, Yangpung was able to reach a transcendent realm where he could be acknowledged as a heroic figure. Although it was a challenging journey for young children, the resolute determination of his sisters to reunite with their mother propelled them forward without hesitation. As a result, they were able to reunite with their mother and finally escape from their trials. Moreover, during their adventurous journey, Yangpung entered a phase where he was recognized for his heroism by the transcendental beings.
Thirdly, through the tertiary assistance of transcendental beings, Yangpung became a complete hero. The King of Heaven revealed Yangpung's destiny to him and bestowed him with armor. The Bodhisattva took him as a disciple, assisting him in cultivating the abilities to fulfill his destiny, and even provided him with divine objects. As a result, Yangpung was ultimately able to transform into a fully-fledged hero.
As Yangpung becomes a heroic figure through the threefold assistance, it is evident that his aspirations were not driven by filial piety or the prosperity of his family. While it may appear that he enters a life of wealth and glory after saving the nation, he does not cling to earthly attachments as he fulfills his responsibilities after his father's passing. Ultimately, Yangpung seeks to reunite with his mother and sisters, to lead and care them, striving to become a true hero in its genuine sense. This pursuit can be considered as the ultimate value he aimed for.
