초록

해방 후 척박하고 혼란한 시기에 『포은 정몽주전 조선역대위인화첩 제1집』이 발행되었다. 이승만과 조용만이 그리고 써서 현우사에서 1946년 3월 1일 발행되었다. 아직까지 강점기에 우리 그림책이 만들어졌다는 기록도 실물도 없는 상황에서 상당히 이른 시기에 나온 이 책을 이야기 그림책의 처음 자리에 놓을 수 있겠다. 이 책은 화첩이라는 부제가 붙은 만큼 그림이 서사의 기둥을 세우고 글이 그림을 보충하고 확장하며 정몽주의 일대기를 전개한다.
이 글에서는 『포은 정몽주전』의 해제를 소개하며 왜 화첩인가, 왜 정몽주인가를 규명했다. 또한 화첩이면서 ‘전(傳)’의 서술 구조를 가진 그림책으로서의 『포은 정몽주전』의 글과 그림의 관계를 살펴보고 그림책으로서의 의의를 고찰했다.
『포은 정몽주전』의 그림은 행인의 다른 역사물 그림과 마찬가지로 정보가 많지 않은 고려 시대의 인물 내면 심리와 사건 당시의 정황 혹은 사건과 관련된 자연물을 극적으로 묘사하며 서사를 구축한다. 조용만의 글은 전통적인 ‘전(傳)’ 서술 구조를 취하며 그 그림을 보충하고 확장하는 역할을 한다. 이럼으로써 이 책의 그림과 글은 일반적인 그림책의 글과 그림의 역할을 전도한다.
이 책의 그림책으로서의 의의는 첫째, 상당히 이른 시기의 책임에도 불구하고 그림이 글을 보조하는 것이 아닌 글을 이끌어 가는, 글과 그림의 역할 관계가 전도된 책이라는 점에 의의가 있다. 둘째, 작가에게 특히 그림 작가에게 그림책을 만들겠다는 인식이 없었음에도 결과적으로 글과 호응하는 그림책이 만들어졌다는 데 의의가 있다. 이는 2,30년대 우리 신문 삽화의 발전에 힘입은 바 크고 이승만이 그 주역이었기 때문에 가능한 일이었다고 보인다. 셋째, 탄탄히 서사의 기둥을 세우고 있는 그림과 그 그림을 보충하고 확장하는 글로 좋은 그림책을 만들 수 있다는 인식을 심어주었다는 데에 의의가 있다. 오늘날 그림작가들이 그림책을 제작하는 기회가 늘어나며 글 서사의 빈약함을 노출하는 경우가 많은데, 『포은 정몽주전』과 같이 그림으로 먼저 서사의 중심을 잡는 것이 그들에게 주효한 방법론이 될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

After liberation, during a period of barren and chaotic, “Poeun Jeong Mong-ju Jeon - The First Painting Album (Whacheob) of the Great of Joseon Dynasty” was published. It was drawn by Syngman Rhee and written by Cho Yong-man, and published by Hyeonwusa on March 1, 1946. With no record of the creation of our picture book during the Japanese occupation and no real life yet, this book, which came out quite early, can be put at the beginning of the story picture book. This book has the subtitle “Hwacheob,” so the painting sets up the pillar of the narrative, the writing supplements and expands such a painting, and unravels the life story of Chung Mong-ju. This article introduced the explanation of Poeun Jeong Mong-ju Jeon』 and identified why it was Hwacheob and why it was Jeong Mong-ju. In addition, the relationship between the text and the picture of 『Poeun Jeong Mong-ju Jeon』 as a picture book and a picture book with a narrative structure of ‘jeon’ was examined and the significance of it as a picture book was considered. Like other historical paintings by passers-by, the paintings of 『Poeun Jeong Mong-ju Jeon』 build a narrative by dramatically depicting the character’s inner psychology and the situation at the time of the incident or natural objects related to the incident in the Goryeo Dynasty, where there is not much information. Cho Yong-man’s writing takes the traditional narrative structure of ‘Jeon’ and serves to supplement and expand the picture. In this way, the pictures and text in this book reverse the role of the text and pictures in general picture books. The significance of this book as a picture book is, first, that it is a book in which the relationship between the roles of text and picture is inverted, in which pictures lead the text rather than assist the text, despite the responsibility of a fairly early period. Second, it is meaningful that a picture book that responds to the text was created even though the author, especially the illustrator, did not have the perception that he would make a picture book. This seems to have been possible thanks to the development of our newspaper illustrations in the 20s and 30s, and because Syngman Rhee was the leading figure. Third, it is meaningful in that it has instilled awareness that a good picture book can be made with a picture that firmly establishes the pillar of narrative and an article that supplements and expands the picture. This reminded us of the need for more training to build narratives with pictures, as modern picture writers often expose the weakness of narratives as opportunities to produce picture books increase.
