「이대봉전」 異本考 -동양문고본을 중심으로- (A study of different versions )

초록

<이대봉전>은 필사본, 방각본, 활자본이 모두 있고, 貰冊으로도 읽힌 고소설이다. 뿐만 아니라 <이대봉전>과 같은 내용이면서 작품명만 다른 <양주봉전>, <주봉전>, <봉황대>란 필사본과 활자본 고소설까지 포함한다면 이 작품에 대한 독자호응도는 고소설사에서도 주목해야할 것이다. 본고에서는 상업적 목적을 가진 방각본, 구활자본과 동양문고본인 세책을 대비하여 세책의 특징을 살펴보았다. 방각본 소설과 활자본 소설이 전국적으로 유통되었던 상품화된 고소설이라면 세책은 필사를 통해서 서울에만 있었던 고소설의 유통양식이었으며 활자본 고소설의 원천이 되기도 했다. 그러므로 세책의 경우는 방각본과 더불어 다른 필사본과의 대비와 구활자본과의 대비를 통해 이 이본이 가지는 특징을 밝히는 작업이 필요하다. 왜냐하면 이런 작업이 기반이 될 때 비로소 세책이 가지는 상품화의 특성이나 의미를 찾아볼 수 있기 때문이다.동양문고본은 필사본 나손본과 대비할 때는 전체적인 축약이 이루어졌음에도 불구하고 이대봉의 영웅적 활약과 대봉을 중심으로 한 가족의 헤어짐과 만남, 장애황과의 결연과 이대봉을 중심으로한 가족의 부귀영화에 비중을 두었다.방각본은 다른 이본보다 많은 변개가 이루어졌지만 여자주인공의 영웅성을 드러내는 쪽으로 서술되고 있고, 이에 비해서 동양문고본은 이대봉 중심의 서술을 하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 구활자본은 부분적인 변화가 있지만 필사본 계열을 따르고 있고 동양문고본보다 축약이 더 되어 있어 줄거리 전달에 그치고 있는 것으로 보인다.이런 이본 대비로 보면 <이대봉전>의 주된 작품군은 필사본계열이고 방각본은 상업성의 극대화를 이룬 본으로 여성영웅소설이 가장 성행할 때 여성영웅성을 극대화한 본이라는 것이다. 다음으로는 상업적 목적을 띤 동양문고본은 이대봉의 영웅성을 중심으로하면서 단지 독자선호도가 높은 남자주인공이 중심이 된 대부분의 영웅소설의 범주를 지키면서 여성영웅의 등장을 내포했다는 것이다. 그리고 좀더 거론되어야 하겠지만 <이대봉전>은 동양문고본으로 이루어지기 전에 이미 많은 필사본이 존재하는 것으로 보아 상당한 독자선호도를 가지고 있었던 것으로 보인다. 그렇기 때문에 필사본 계열을 따르는 동양문고본은 특별한 변개가 이루어지지 않았으며, 필사과정에서 축약이 대체적으로 이루어졌다는 것이다. 물론 축약이 이루어지는 것은 세책으로 만들어질 때의 비용절감문제도 있었겠지만 다른 이본을 필사시 작품 자체의 흥미나 내용의 전개에서 무리가 없을 경우 큰 변개는 일어나지 않았을 것으로 보이기 때문이다. 그러나 이러한 이본 대비로 세책인 <이대봉전>의 특성을 밝히는 작업 외에 서울지방에서 유통된 세책의 구체적인 독자에 대한 연구가 심도 있게 이루어져야 한다는 사실도 고려되어야 한다.

영어초록

<Lee Dae-bong Cheon(이대봉전)> is a Korean classic novel that was read in handwriting, old-printed and xerographically-produced version as well as in rental library manuscripts. The story was also published in handwriting and old-printed version under different titles such as <Yang Ju-bong Cheon(양주봉전)>, <Jubong Cheon(주봉전)> and <Bonghwangdae(봉황대)>, reflecting the novel's popularity among its readers. In this regard, <Lee Dae-bong Cheon> deserves a special place in the history of Korean classic novels. In this paper, we highlight the special feature of rental library manuscripts by looking at the edition of Dongyangmungo in comparison to xerographically-produced and old-printed novels. If xerographically-produced and old-printed novel were commercialized forms of classic novels distributed nationwide, rental library manuscripts were unique to the Seoul area and served as the source for old-printed classics. In this regard, it is essential in understanding rental library manuscripts to explore the characteristics of the different versions through comparisons with handwriting and old-printed versions respectively as well as with xerographically-produced ones. Without conducting these research in advance, commercial elements of rental library manuscripts cannot be easily identified.
While the edition of Dongyangmungo is as condensed as the Nason's edition, the story is centered on two major themes; the parting and reunion of the main character, Daebong's family with regards to his heroic adventure and the prosperity of his family in relation to his achievement of love with the female heroine Chang Ae-hwang.
As opposed to the other version, we can identify the most alterations in xerographically-produced version which give more emphasis on the heroic deeds of the female main character. In contrast, the edition of Dongyangmungo unfolds the story centering on Lee Dae-bong. The old-printed version largely follows the handwriting version albeit some partial story alterations. Since it is more condensed a form than the edition of Dongyangmungo, the aforementioned version does not go far beyond storytelling.
Based on the comparisons of different versions so far, we conclude that mainstream versions of <Lee Dae-bong Cheon> are mostly handwriting versions. Xerographically-produced versions are the most commercial in its nature, putting weight on the heroin's story at a time when demand for heroin stories were at its peak. The edition of Dongyangmungo, embodying relatively high degree of commercial elements, centered the story on the heroic adventure of Lee Dae-bong. While adhering to the typical hero-centered plot, it, at the same time, implied the emergence of a heroin. Although we need to explore further in detail, <Lee Dae-bong Cheon> seems to have had a firm base of readers since many handwriting versions exist dating back before the creation of the edition of Dongyangmungo. This explains why there is few critical alterations in the edition of Dongyangmungo which largely follows the handwriting version. Condensing the contents were mostly undertaken in the handwriting process. Of course, cost reduction may have been one of the motivations behind condensation, but most of all, alterations were deemed unnecessary as long as the story remained interesting and plausible in the different versions.
Apart from identifying the features of <Lee Dae-bong Cheon>, an example of rental library manuscript, from the comparison we undertake, we also acknowledge the need to conduct a more elaborate research on the specific readers of rental library manuscript distributed outside the Seoul region.
