저가 항공사의 기업 내·외부요인 분석을 통한 파산 원인 도출에 관한 탐색적 연구 (An Exploratory Study on Deriving the Causes of Bankruptcy Through Analysis of Internal and External Factors of Low-Cost Airlines)

초록

항공산업은 외부환경에 따라 수요변화가 크게 나타나며, 고정원가 비중이 높아 수요에 따른 탄력적조정이 어려워 타 산업 대비 안정적인 실적 시현이 어려운 산업이다. 또한 항공산업을 통해 국가의 경제활동이 이루어짐에 따라 정부의 영향에서도 자유로울 수 없으며, 일정 부분 사회적 공공재로서의 역할을 하고 있는 산업이다. 항공자유화 정책으로 많은 항공사들이 시장에 진입하며 산업 내 경쟁이 심화되었고, 파산하는 항공사들이 생겨났으나, 항공사들의 파산에 대한 체계적인 연구는 제한적으로 이루어져 왔다.
특히 Covid 19 이후 항공산업의 어려움이 지속적으로 이어지고 있는 상황에서 항공산업의 파산 원인에 대한 연구는 필요한 상황이다. 따라서 본 연구는 선행연구의 기업도산 연구 프레임워크을 기초로하여, 항공자유화 정책 이후 파산에 이른 저가항공사를 대상으로 항공사의 도산원인에 대한 체계적인분석을 연구 목적으로 한다.
본 연구를 수행하기 위하여 항공자유화 이후 파산에 이른 73개의 모든 항공사를 연구 샘플로 하여, 파산 관련 데이터를 얻을 수 있는 37개의 항공사를 구체적인 연구 대상으로 하였다. 또한 37개의 항공사 중 파산 관련 데이터를 구체적으로 구할 수 있는 Canjet, Debonair, USA3000, Compass Airline, Baboo, Air Berlin, VLM, Thomas Cook Airlines 8개의 항공사에 대한 사례 연구를 진행하였다.
사례분석 결과, 37개의 저가항공사들의 파산원인은 경영자 요인(18%)와 재무요인(15%), 정치/국제요인(13%), 기업구조요인(6%), 시장업계요인(6%), 기타(5%), 경기자금요인(2%), 판매요인(1%) 순으로나타났다. 이를 좀 더 체계적으로 분석하기 위하여, 기업 내부역량 정도와 기업 외부 환경요인으로 축을 나누어 연구 프레임워크를 제시하며 분석을 진행하였다. 연구결과 저가항공사들의 파산원인은 1) 시장이해의 부족, 2)불확실한 외부환경, 3)내․외부의 총체적 어려움, 4)자체역량의 부족이라고 크게구분되어 나타남을 알 수 있었고, 가장 많은 기업들이 자체역량의 부족과 불확실한 외부환경으로 파산하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구결과는 항공산업에 있어서 파산 원인을 체계적으로 밝히고자 한 점에서 향후 항공산업의 이론적, 실무적 시사점을 제공하며 향후 연구 확장성을 기대할 수 있다.

영어초록

Aviation industry is difficult to achieve stable performance compared to other industries because of the high proportion of fixed costs and radical demand changes for external environment. In addition, as the nation’s economic activities are carried out through the aviation industry, it cannot be free from the influence of the government, and plays a role as a social public good to some extent.
The ‘Treaty on Open Skies’ has led many airlines companies to enter the industry, and increased competition brought in bankrupt airlines, but a study on airline bankruptcy has been relatively limited.
Especially, when difficulties continue in the aviation industry since Covid 19, research on the causes of bankruptcy in the aviation industry is needed. Based on the corporate bankruptcy research framework of previous studies, this study purpose on systematically analyzing the causes of low-cost airlines bankruptcy after ‘Treaty on Open Skies’ Using bankrupt 73 airlines since deregulation as a study sample, we focused on the 37 airlines that can obtain bankruptcy-related data. Specially, we introduced 8 case studies including Canjet, Thomas Cook Airlines, USA3000, Compass Airline, Baboo, Air Berlin, VLM, and Debonair.
As a result of case analysis, the reasons for the bankruptcy of 37 low-cost airlines were managerial factors (18%), financial factors (15%), political/international factors (13%), corporate structure factors (6%), and market industry factors (6%), other factors (5%), economic fund factors (2%), and sales factors (1%) were found in the following order. In order to analyze more systematically, we suggested a research framework using two criteria of corporate internal capability and external environmental factors.
The study found that the causes of bankruptcy for LCC(Low-cost carrier) were 1) lack of market understanding, 2) uncertain external environment, 3) internal and external difficulties in general, and 4) lack of own capabilities. We also found that the largest number of companies’ bankruptcy was due to a lack of capabilities and uncertain external conditions. We hope these findings provide theoretical, practical implications and future research scalability in the aviation industry.
