제정기 로마군 공성전에 관한 실증 연구 (An Empirical Study on the Siege of the Roman Army during the Imperial Period)

초록

본 연구는 공화정 후기에서 4세기까지 총 124번의 공성전을 분석하여 포위전의 쇠퇴 가능성을 추론한 것이다. 공화정 후기 총 65번의 공성전을 분석하면 포위전만 한 전투는 21번(32.3%)이었다. 포위망 구축 후 공격한 14번(21.5%) 전투와 곧바로 공격에 들어간 25번(38.5%) 전투를 합하면 공격적인 전투는 39번(60%)이었다. 1-4세기 총 59번의 공성전 중에서 포위전만 한 것은 7번(11.9%)이었고, 포위망을 구축한 후 공격하든 곧바로 공격에 들어가든 공격적인 전투를 한 것은 45번(76.3%)이었다. 공격전을 펼친 것이 공화정 후기에는 60%, 제정기에는 76.3%를 차지한다는 것은 로마 공성전의 전술적 특징이 지속해서 공격전을 지향했다는 것이다.
포위전이 공화정 후기 32.3%에서 제정기 11.9%로 줄어들어 포위전의 쇠퇴를 주장할 수 있지만, 전장을 갈리아족과 게르만족이 적인 서부와 유대, 파르티아, 사산조 페르시아가 적인 동부로 나누어보면 달라진다. 공화정 후기 서부 지역에서 행했던 총 33번의 공성전 중 포위전은 16번(48.9%)에서 제정기 총 11번의 전투 중 5번(45.5%)으로 비율적으로 차이가 없다. 서부 지역에서는 포위전이 쇠퇴했다고 볼 수 없다. 반면 동부 지역에서 행했던 공성전에서 공화정 후기 총 32번의 공성전 중 포위전은 5번(15.6%)에서 제정기 총 48번의 공성전 중 포위전은 2번(4.2%)으로 현격히 감소했다. 이를 볼 때 동부 지역은 공화정 후기보다 제정기에 포위전이 쇠퇴하고, 공격전을 더 선호하는 경향이 있었다. 이는 공성전을 할 줄 모르는 갈리아족과 게르만족, 로마군을 모방하여 공성 기술을 갖춘 유대와 사산조 페르시아에 대한 대응 방식의 차이라고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 공화정 후기와 제정기의 공성전이 동일한 공격전이라고 볼 수 있지만, 적에 따른 지역적 편차가 있으므로 일괄적으로 포위전 쇠퇴라고 주장하기 어렵다.

영어초록

This study analyzes a total of 124 siege wars to infer the possibility of the decline of the siege warfare. When analyzing a total of 65 siege battles in the late republican period, 21 battles(32.3%) were just siege battles. When the 14 battles(21.5%) that attacked after establishing the siege network and the 25 battles(38.5%) that immediately started attacking were combined, the number of offensive battles was 39 battles(60%). Of the 59 siege battles between the 1st and 4th centuries, 7 battles(11.9%) were only siege battles, and 45 battles(76.3%) were the battles that either attacked after establishing a siege network or immediately entered into an attack. The fact that offensive battles took up 60% of the late republican period and 76.3% of the imperial period indicates that the tactical characteristics of the siege of Rome continued to be directed toward offensive warfare.
Although the decline of the siege war can be argued as the siege war has been reduced from 32.3% in the late republican period to 11.9% in the imperial period, it is different when the battlefield is divided into the western part, where Gauls and Germanic enemies are enemies, and the east part, where Parthia and Sassanid Persia are enemies. Of the total 33 siege battles conducted in the western region of the late republican period, there were 16 (48.9%) siege battles and 5 (45.5%) out of 11 battles during the imperial period, so there is no difference in proportion. In the western region, the siege cannot be said to have declined. On the other hand, Of the 32 siege battles conducted in the eastern region of the late Republican Dynasty, siege battles were 5 battles(15.6%). Of the total 48 siege battles during the imperial period, siege battles took place 2 battles(4.2%). In view of this, siege warfare declined during the imperial period rather than the late republican period, and the eastern region tended to prefer offensive warfare. Therefore, although the siege battles of the late Republican period and the imperial period can be regarded as the same offensive battles, it is difficult to argue that the siege wars are in decline as there are regional differences depending on the enemy.
