일제강점기 조선유교회 성격에 대한 재검토 (Reconsidering the Character of Joseon Confucianism Assembly during the Japanese Colonial Era)

초록

이 글은 안순환이 1932년에 설립한 조선유교회의 성격을 재검토한 글이다. 기존 연구는 친일과 반일의 관점에서 지나친 이분법적인 분석을 통하여 각각 조선유교회를 친일단체와 민족운동단체로 규정하였다. 그로 인해 당시 조선유교회가 지녔던 다양하고 역동적인 역사적 실상이 감추어지는 아이러니를 낳았다. 경학원에 참여한 일제협력유림과 조선유교회 명교학원에 참여한 개신유림은 모두 유교를 중시하였지만 그 지향은 매우 달랐다. 전자는 일제에 대한 이데올로기적 협력 수단의 유교로 전시체제기에 ‘황도유학’으로 연결되었으며 1939년에 결성된 조선유교연합회에 참여하였다. 그러나 후자는 일제에게 협력하지 않았으며 전시체제기에도 조선유도연합회에 참여하지 않고 ‘獨善其身’을 선택하였다. 일제 통치가 허용하는 합법적인 틀 내에서 조선인의 사회적 권익과 정치적 지위를 개선하려는 활동은 상황에 따라 일제에 대한 저항이 되기도 하고 협력이 되기도 하는 것처럼 조선유교회는 어쩌면 유림에 대한 ‘식민지의 회색지대’일 수도 있다. 이미 국가가 망한 상황에서 조선 유교의 ‘道’를 수호하고자 하는 조선유교회 관계자들의 열망이 일제협력유림 외에 다른 유림의 동참을 불러들었다고 생각한다. 그나마 곡부 공자묘 위문 사업을 비롯하여 유림이 일시적이나마 자기 목소리를 내고 정체성을 확인할 수 있는 계기를 마련해 준 것이 1930년대 전반기 조선유교회의 의의였다고 할 수 있다. 그렇기 때문에 역설적으로 조선유교회와 그 주요 인물들에 대해 본격적으로 정밀한 연구가 필요한 시점이다.

영어초록

This study reconsidered the character of the Joseon Confucianism Assembly founded by Sun-Hwan Ahn in 1932. Through the excessively dichotomous analysis from Pro-Japanese and Anti-Japanese perspectives, the existing studies defined the Joseon Confucianism Assembly as a pro-Japanese group and a national movement group, respectively. Accordingly, that brought about the irony that various and dynamic historical facts of the Joseon Confucianism Assembly were hidden. Both pro-Japanese Confucian scholars who participated in Kyeonghakwon (The Academy of Confucian Classics Studies) and reformed Confucian scholars who participated in the Myeonggyo Hakwon of the Joseon Confucianism Assembly attached importance to Confucianism; however, the orientation was very different. The former was the Confucianism as a means of the ideological cooperation with the Japanese Empire, which was connected to ‘Hwangdo Confucianism’ and participated in the Joseon Federation of Confucianism organized in 1939. However, the latter neither cooperated with the Japanese Empire nor participated in the Joseon Confucian Alliance even during the period of the wartime system but chose ‘to maintain personal integrity during chaotic times.’ Like in the legal framework allowed by the Japanese imperialist rule, the activities to improve the Joseon people’s social rights, interests, and political status may be resistance against or cooperation with the Japanese Empire, depending on the circumstances, the Joseon Confucianism Assembly may be ‘the gray zone in the colony’ for Confucian scholars. It is judged that in the situation in which the country already perished, the passion of the persons concerned in the Joseon Confucianism Assembly, who would protect the ‘tao’ of Joseon Confucianism, summoned Confucian scholars’ participation, other than pro-Japanese Confucian scholars. Even so, the significance of the Joseon Confucianism Assembly in the first half of the 1930s was that the opportunities were prepared for Confucian scholars to utter their voices and check their identities though temporarily, like a business for paying a visit to Confucius’s Tomb in Qufu. Thus, paradoxically, it is time when a rigorous study is required in earnest on the Joseon Confucianism Assembly and its important members.
