애널리스트 추천의견의 정보가치 재검증 (Reexamination of Information Value of Analyst Recommendation in Korean Stock Markets)

초록

본 연구에서는 2000년부터 2015년까지 국내 주식시장에 상장된 주식들을 대상으로 최근 3개월 이내에 제시된 모든 애널리스트의 추천의견 점수를 평균하여 측정한 평균 추천의견의 월별 변화를 측정하였다. 그런 다음, 이 변화량의 상·하위 1%에 해당하는 관측치들을 사건일로 하여 평균 추천의견이 크게 변경된 시점 전후의 주가반응을 분석하여 애널리스트 추천의견의 정보가치를 재검증하였다.
실증분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 평균 추천의견이 상승한 표본과 하락한 표본 모두에서 평균 추천의견 변경시점의 정보가치, 즉 초과수익률이 가장 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 평균 추천의견이 상승 변경된 경우에는 사건월 전후 6개월간 통계적으로 유의한 양의 누적초과수익률이 발생하여 사건기간 동안 평균 추천의견 변경이 지속적으로 유의한 정보가치를 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 평균 추천의견이 하락 변경된 경우에는 오직 사건월에서만 유의한 정보가치가 존재하고, 사건기간 이후에는 추천의견의 변경 내용과 달리 초과수익률이 양의 값으로 상승 반전하여 정보가치를 가지지 못하는 것으로 나타났다.
이상과 같은 결과는 개별 애널리스트 추천의견 자료를 이용하여 추천의견 상승 변경 시 사건일 전후 단기간에서만 양의 초과수익률이 존재하고, 추천의견 하락 변경 시 사건일 이후 기간에서 지속적으로 유의한 음의 초과수익률이 존재한다는 기존 연구결과들과 상이한데, 이는 본 연구에서 사용한 평균 추천의견의 변경이 개별 애널리스트의 추천의견 변경과는 상이한 정보가치를 가진다는 것을 의미한다.

영어초록

This study reexamines the information value of analysts’ recommendation by analyzing the stock price responses when there are big changes of the average recommendation level which is averaged over all recommendation for an individual stock made in the last three months for each month from 2000 to 2015 in Korean stock markets.
The results of the empirical analysis are as follows. First, the information value of the average recommendation changes is the highest at the time of change. At that time, the sample with increased average recommendation level has significantly positive abnormal returns, 9.57% per month and the sample with decreased average recommendation level has significantly negative abnormal returns, -4.04%.
Second, when the average recommendation level is increased, there are significantly positive cumulative abnormal returns not only for six months before but also for six months after the event month. These results indicate that the increase of the average recommendation level has a significant information value during the whole event windows and they are contrary to the existing research results suggested by Byun and Kim(2005), Kho and Kim(2007), etc.
Third, when the average recommendation level is decreased, there is the significant information value only at the event month but after the event period, unlike the average recommendation change, the negative abnormal return at the event month is reversed to the significantly positive value. These results are also in contradiction with the results of Womack(1996) and Kho and Kim(2007) that significantly negative abnormal returns consistently occur for up to 6 months after the event month.
In order to analyze whether the above results depend on the sample composition, we reconstruct new sample by selecting the independent three months having the largest changes of the average recommendation level for each stock during the sample period. The empirical results using the new sample are exactly consistent with the above results. This means that the average recommendation changes have different information value with that of individual analyst’s recommendation change regardless of how the sample is constructed.
