정상 장⋅노년층의 과제 유형에 따른 속담 이해 능력 (Ability to Understand Proverbs of Normal Middle-aged and Elderly Populations according to Type of Tasks)

초록

정상 성인과 노인들을 대상으로 하여 비유 언어 이해에 관한 연구가 이루어져 왔으나 속담을 주제로 표현하기와 이름대기 등 속담 이해 능력의 평가를 다양한 측면에서 시도한 연구는 없었다. 본 연구는 55세∼74세 정상 장·노년층을 대상으로 속담 이해 과제 유형별 수행력을 살펴보고 속담 이해 능력과 인지 및 집행기능과 어떤 상관관계가 있는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 속담 이해 능력을 살펴보기 위해 속담 설명하기(PE), 속담 이름대기(PN), 속담 그림 선택하기(PPS) 과제를 제작 실시하였다. 그 결과는 첫째, 장년층이 노년층에 비해 높은 수행력을 나타냈고, 교육년수가 높은 집단이 낮은 집단에 비해 높은 수행력을 보였다. 장년층의 경우 PE, PN, PPS 과제 모두 교육년수에 따라 유의한 차이가 나타났고, 노년층의 경우 PPS 과제에서 유의한 차이가 있었다. 둘째, 속담 이해 능력과 인지 및 집행기능과 상관관계를 분석한 결과, PE 과제는 TMT-e 수행시간과 유의한 상관관계가 나타났고, PN 과제는 K-MoCA점수와 TMT-e 수행력 모두 유의한 상관관계가 나타났다. PPS 과제는 K-MoCA 점수, 세 가지 속담 이해 과제의 총점은 K-MoCA 및 TMT-e 수행력 모두 유의한 상관관계를 보였다. 이러한 결과를 통해 노인의 비유 언어 이해에 있어서 전두엽기능에 영향을 미치는 속담 이해 과제 수행력을 분석함으로써 중재 시 고려해야 할 요인들을 이해하는 데 일조하였다. 이는 궁극적으로 예방적 중재의 효율성을 높이는데 더욱 기여할 것이다.

영어초록

Although studies have been conducted on the understanding of figurative languages with regard to normal adults and the elderly so far, no study has attempted to evaluate the understanding abilities for proverbs in terms of various aspects, such as expressing the themes of proverbs and naming them. In that regard, this study aimed to investigate the performance of each task type in understanding proverbs according to the normal middle-aged and elderly people aged 55 to 74, and to elucidate the correlation of understanding abilities for proverbs with the cognitive and executive functions. To explore the ability to understand proverbs, this study conducted the created tasks such as proverb explaining (PE), proverb naming (PN), and proverb picture selecting (PPS).
The results are as follows. First, the middle-aged people exhibited a higher performance than the elderly people, and the groups with higher education showed a higher performance than the groups with lower education. Moreover, in case of the middle-aged people, PE, PN, and PPS tasks all revealed a significant difference according to education level, whereas PPS task exhibited a significant difference as education level in case of the elderly people.
Second, in results of analyzing the correlation between ability to understand proverbs and functions in cognition and execution, PE task exhibited a significant correlation with TMT-e performance time, and PN task showed a significant correlation with both K-MoCA score and TMT-e performance. PPS task showed a significant correlation with K-MoCA score and the total score of three tasks on the understanding of proverbs showed a significant correlation with both K- and MoCA TMT-e performance.
Through the results identified thus far, it is thought that this study partly contributed to understanding the factors that should be considered during the intervention by analyzing the performance of proverb understanding tasks, which affect the functions of frontal lobe, in understanding the figurative languages by the elderly people. This will ultimately contribute further to increasing the efficiency of preventive intervention.
