해방기 지식 場의 재편과 ‘번역’의 정치학 (Reorganization of Intellectual Arena and the Politics of Translations in the Liberation Period)

초록

‘해방’이라는 역사적 사건은 이 땅에 다시 ‘번역’이라는 정치적 기호를 불러낸다. 일본어를 통해 식민자와 피식민자 사이의 의사소통이 가능했던 식민지시기를 지나, 이제는 ‘번역’이 없으면, 의사소통조차 불가능한 정치적 상황에 직면하게 된 것이다.
이러한 상황에서 해방기 번역 활동은 미소 군사 당국과 이에 대응하는 지식인들 양자에서 치열하게 진행되었다. 번역은 당대 이념적 선전활동의 주요한 매개체였으며, 이러한 번역의 정치성은 해방기가 지식의 해방구, 치열한 이념의 각축장임을 증명하는 또 다른 증표가 되는 것이다.
우선 해방기 당대 지식인들에게 ‘번역’은 식민지 시대에서 새로운 민족국가건설기로 넘어가는 과도기적 시대, 지식의 공백기를 메울 중요한 수단이었다. 특히 동아시아를 넘어 서구 나아가 ‘세계’로 확장된 시각으로 약소국인 조선의 정세를 진단하고 나아갈 바를 고찰하는 데 번역은 유효한 참조틀을 제공하는 중요한 방식이 아닐 수 없었다. 서구의 사상은 물론 좌파적 사상 역시 공평하게 번역의 대상이 될 수 있었으며, 전반적으로 오히려 좌파 지식이 그 양에 있어서는 우세했다. 단행본에는 좌파 원전 번역이 성황이었고, 잡지에도 초기에는 소련과 중국 혁명에 우호적인 당대 저널리스트들의 글이 보다 많이 번역되었다. 이렇게 해방기 지식인들은 서구의 전위적 지식인이나 저널리스트들과 동시대적으로 호흡하며, 자신들의 이념적 토대를 만들어갔다. 번역된 지식기사와 문학작품은 당대 정치적 상황을 파악하는 바로미터였으며, 지식인들의 내면적 열망의 표현체였다. 그리하여 번역문은 때론 직접적 진술로는 표현하기 어려운 상황에서 이를 대신해주기도 했다. 에드가 스노의 글을 번역하여 미소 양군 동시 철수를 주장하고, 동남아시아의 반제국주의 투쟁을 집중적으로 번역한 것도 모두 번역문이 당대 지식인들의 간접적인 정치적 진술이었음을 증명한다. 전통담론조차도 형성되기 전이었던 해방기에 번역은, 곧 해방 후 조선이 행한 주요한 지식의 탈식민 전략으로, 타자를 통해 주체를 형성하는 정치적 전술이었던 것이다. 이처럼 그들은 번역을 통해 바람직한 민족국가 건설의 희망을 꿈꾸고 이를 바탕으로 세계 시민으로서 세상과 소통하는 방식을 배웠다.
그러나 그만큼 정치적 상황에도 민감하게 영향을 받을 수밖에 없었다. 초기에는 번역의 필요성만큼 원칙적 고민 또한 깊어서 김영건처럼, 당대의 좌파 번역가들은 지식의 식민성, 제국주의적 지식의 질서를 인식하고 이를 극복해야 한다고 생각하기도 했다. 그러나 전반적으로 미소 강대국의 논리에서 벗어나기 힘들었고, 1949년 이후 번역은 점차 서구편향적인 길을 걷게 된다. 해방기의 비교적 자유로운 지식 정치의 시대를 넘어 이제는 바야흐로 단독 정부 수립과 그 이데올로기에 봉사해야 할 시기가 도래한 것이다.

영어초록

The historical event called ‘liberation’ calls out a political symbol called ‘translation.’Passing through the Japanese colonial period in which communication between the colonizers and the colonized people was possible through the Japanese language, they come to face political circumstances where even communication is impossible without ‘translation.’
Under these circumstances, translation activities during the liberation period were intensely under way between the U.S. and the Soviet Union military authorities and the intellectuals responding thereto. Translation was a major medium of ideological propaganda activities at the time and the politics of such translation became another proof testifing that the period of liberation was the outlet for knowledge and the arena of intense ideological struggle.
For the intellectuals in the liberation period, ‘translation’ was an important means to fill the period of intellectual vacuum at the time of the transitional period from the colonial period to the period of establishing a new nation-state. Particularly, in diagnosing the state of affairs of Joseon, which was a minor power, and examining the course it would take from the viewpoint of expanding to the West and further ‘the world’, the translation was an important way to provide effective framework of reference. Not only Western thought, but also leftist thought was equally able to be the objects of translation, and, on the whole, leftist knowledge was actually superior in quantities. In the form of an independent volume, the translations of leftist original texts were thriving, and in the form of magazines, the translations of the writings of the journalists at the time who had been friendly to the revolutions of the Soviet Union and China were more in quantities. Thus, the intellectuals in the liberation period were building up their ideological basis by keeping in tune with avant-garde intellectuals or journalists in the West contemporarily. Translated knowledge articles and literary works were the barometer to grasp political circumstances at the time and also expression channels of inner aspir translatthe intellectuals. The translations in the liberation period when even traditional discussions had not yet been formed were major strategies that Joseon conducted right after the liberation to escape from intellectual colony and were political tactics to form autonomy through others. Accordingly, however, they could not help being affected so sensitively by political circumstances. Translations after 1949 gradually came to follow the line leaning toward the West. Now beyond the age of relatively free intellectual politics, the time was about to arrive for them to render servicesto establishment of the single government and its ideology.
