초록

본고는 『숨겨진 극장 : 식민지 흥행장의 치안과 통속(Veiled Theatre : Security and Popularity of Entertainment Field in Colonial Korea)』에 대한 서평이다. 『숨겨진 극장』은 식민지 흥행문화 전반에 작동한 취체와 통제의 힘 즉 검열 제도를 면밀하게 추적하였다. 그리고 검열 제도가 발생시킨 극장의 정치적 수행성에 주목하여 불온과 통속의 극장사를 직조해 낸 연구서이다.
저자는 먼저 통감부 시기 흥행/장 취체에서 시작하여 전시통제의 동원시스템과 1944년 조선흥행등취체규칙에 이르는 사적 변화를 탐색하였다. 동시에 흥행(시)장의 돈의 흐름이 식민지 경영이라는 국가기획과 정책의 추이에 달려있었음을 세밀하게 간파해냈다. 즉 검열과 연극사의 관계가 매우 근원적이라는 입장을 선명하게 공시하면서, 식민지 조선의 식민 경영 전략이었던 취체 제도가 조선의 흥행장을 유인하고 서로 교섭하고 결렬하는 과정을 탐구한 것이다. 여기서 멈추지 않고 연구는 제도의 힘을 버티어낸 극장 공간의 문화적 저항력과 정치적 실천들을 추적하는 것으로 이어졌다. 소인극의 불온한 군중과 조선인 극장의 종족적 정체성에 주목하여 피식민 주체였던 조선인의 문화적 기획과 정치적 실천을 추출한 것이다. 최종적으로 저자는 검열과 통제의 조건 하에서 서둘러 자발성을 발휘하거나 혹은 우회하는 방식으로 지극히 세속적으로 존재했던 텍스트들을 표상, 서사, 감정에 주목하여 복권해내는 성과를 거두었다.
이제 저자의 연구 행보는 식민의 검열에서 냉전의 검열로 이행하였는데, 잠재태로 남아 있는 식민지 문화의 수행 기억과 흔적을 어떻게 다시 끌어 올려줄지 그 후속 작업이 기대된다.

영어초록

This paper is a book review of he Veiled Theatre : Security and Popularity of Entertainment Field in Colonial Korea (hereafter, Veiled Theatre) by Lee Seung Hee. Veiled Theatre closely traces the power of regulations and control, in other words, the censorship system, which was at work in the overall entertainment culture in colonial Korea. The book is a research report, which has woven the theatrical history of sedition and popularity by focusing on the political performativity of theatre generated by censorship system.
Lee Seung Hee explores the historical changes, which start from the regulations of entertainment/field during the period of Japanese Resident-General of Korea and lead up to the mobilization system under the wartime control and the rules of regulation on Korean entertainment in 1944. Simultaneously, the author keenly observes and sees through that the flow of money relied on the national plans and policies called the colonial management. In other words, by clearly stating the position that relationship between censorship and theatrical history is something fundamental, she meticulously explores the process, in which the regulation system, which was Japan’s management strategy of colonial Korea, lured in, negotiated with, and ruptured with the Korean entertainment. The study does not stop at this, but goes on to follow the cultural resistance and political practices of theatrical space, which has endured the power of system. She paid attention to the seditious crowd of amateur theatricals and ethnic identity of Korean theatre, and extracted the cultural plans and political practices of Koreans, who were the colonized agent. In the end, she reinstates the texts by focusing on the representations, narratives, and emotions of the texts, which existed as something extremely secular in a manner of hastily displaying or bypassing voluntarism under the condition of censorship and control.
Now the author’s research has moved on from the censorship in colonial Korea to the censorship in the Cold War period, which leaves me anticipating about how her follow-up work would unearth the performative memories and traces of colonial culture, which remains in a latent state.
