대항 공론장의 사회적 가치에 관한 연구 (Social Value of Counter Public Sphere)

초록

지금까지 대항 공론장의 학문적 논의는 새로운 미디어기술과 메시지를 중심으로 한 연구로 편중되어, 그 본연의 개념적 가치가 제대로 조명되지 못 했다. 때문에 본 논의에서는 좀 더 폭넓은 연구와 올바른 사례적용을 위해, 대항 공론장에 내포된 사회적 가치를 밝히고자 했다. 이를 위해 기존의 이론들을 재분석하고, 대항공론장 개념을 재구성하고자 세 가지 차원에서 접근했다.
역사적 차원에서 살펴본 대항 공론장은 신사회운동을 통해 본격화 되었으며, 사회적 보편적 인식의 틀에 저항하고자 나타난 현상이라 할 수 있다. 또한 시민사회의 재활성화, 재조직화 그리고 생활정치로의 진입을 가능하게 해주었다고 평가할 수 있다. 이데올로기적 차원에서는 계급적 접근과 주체중심적 접근으로 나누어 설명될 수 있다.
계급적 접근에서의 대항 공론장은 경험을 토대로 한 계급해방을 위한 자율적 커뮤니케이션의 장인 동시에 실천의 장이라 할 수 있다. 주체중심적 접근의 대항 공론장은 지배문화코드에 대항코자 하는 집단적 정체성 형성의 장이다. 또한 새롭게 등장하는 미디어로 인해 ‘주체구성의 민주화’를 가능하게 하였다고 평하고 있다. 분석적 차원에서 대항 공론장을 구성하는 주체는 근대적 합리성과 권위로부터 배제된 사람들이며, 일상생활의 정치화, 사회적 불평등의 발현, 사회변혁 및 체제변화를 그 주제로 삼고 있다. 또한, 대항 공론장은 다원적이고 복수적인 공간을 추구하고 있다. 커뮤니케이션방식으로는 일상적인 삶의 현장에서 사회문제를 제기하며, 주로 비이성적이고 비합리적인 담화나 시위와 항쟁 등을 통해 나타나는 것을 알 수 있다.
이와 같은 결과를 토대로, 앞으로의 연구에서는 다양한 시민미디어와 시민운동 등의 사례들을 통해 대항 공론장의 사회적 가치를 검증할 수 있는 지속적인 학문적 논의가 필요하다.

영어초록

The social and historical meaning of the counter public sphere has been overlooked due to the fact that contemporary academic discussions on the counter public sphere are heavily focused on the development of new media technology and the characteristics of messages conveyed through new media. In order to conceptualize the counter public sphere based on its social and historical meaning, this paper integrates a broad range of academic discussions and historical cases, and reevaluates the existing theories. More specifically, the discussions in this paper revolve around three dimensions: Historical, Ideological, and Analytical.
From the historical point of view, the counter public sphere is conceptualized as a core part of the New-Society-Movement which represents the resistance to the general framework of social values.
The discussions on the ideological dimension of the counter public sphere incorporate two perspectives: the class centered approach and the subjectivity centered approach. Viewed from the social class perspective, the counter public sphere is defined as a social place that enables people to share their class experience and practice autonomous communication, an essential element of the class emancipation movement. The subjectivity centered discussion on the counter public sphere is focused on its contribution to the formation of collective class identity among the people who resist the dominant cultural codes imposed by society. In other words the emergence of new types of media, or the counter public sphere, is viewed as a driving force of “democratization of subjectivity formation.” The discussions on the counter public sphere from the analytical perspective are focused on the principal agents of the counter public sphere, the people who have been alienated by the authorities of society constructed on modern rationalism. The counter public sphere enables its agents to politicize their everyday lives, to manifest the social inequality, to practice social change, and to reform the social system. The agents of the counter public sphere pursue diversity and pluralism by addressing various social issues stemming from everyday life experiences in an non-rational or non-reasonable manners such as fragmented conversations, protests, or resistance movements. The future discussions on the social and historical meaning of the counter public sphere require vigorous studies on a variety of cases concerning citizen media and civic movement.
