百丈懷海의 禪法에 대한 考察 (The Consideration of Seon thought of Master Baichang-haihuai)

초록

唐代의 百丈懷海(749～814)는 남악회양과 마조도일의 조사선 선풍을 계승하면서 황벽과 임제, 그리고 위산과 앙산으로 나타나는 선종 五家의 발전을 이룬 인물이다. 마조도일의 선법을 계승한 백장은 禪門에 청규를 도입 제정시킴으로써 선종교단 발전에 기틀을 마련하였으며, 특히 백장의 선법은 潙山靈祐(771～853)와 黃檗希運에게 전해짐으로써 法系 上에 있어서도 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다.
본 연구는 백장 어록을 중심으로 설해지는 禪法을 心性論과 修證論의 입장에서 살펴보았다. 백장은 다양한 경전과 어록을 인용하면서 자신의 禪的 견해를 드러내었다. 心性說에 있어서는 ‘心性無染’을 강조하였다. 백장은 심성의 근본은 본래 원만 청정하기 때문에 단지 번뇌 망상에 물들지 않으면 된다고 보았다. 마음의 체용을 나타내는 말인 ‘體露眞常’의 一句는 바로 마음의 바탕이며, 언제나 참되고 항상 그대로의 모습을 가지고 있다는 것이다. 이 의미는 본래의 마음 바탕인 자성은 어떤 것에도 물듦이 없이 본래 청정하다는 것을 강조한 것으로 마조의 ‘道不用修 但莫汚染’의 가르침을 계승하였다.
뿐만 아니라, 깨달음의 본질적 형태에 대해서도 백장은 단박에 깨달음에 이르는 돈오견성의 자리를 밝혔다. 백장의 證悟는 言下變悟라는 형식의 돈오견성이지만, 견성의 내용에 있어서는 삼구투과라는 형태를 취하였다. 이점은 知解에서 벗어나는 방편을 통하여 어떤 견해에도 머물지 말아야 진정한 깨달음이라 주장하였다.
주지하듯이, 백장의 선법은 달마를 비롯해 마조의 가르침을 계승하면서 자신의 선리를 밝히고 있다는 것은 백장의 설법에 나타난 두드러진 특징이다. 이러한 점에서 中國禪宗史에 백장의 출현은 선사상적 바탕위에 실천적 수행의 모습을 청규의 제정을 통해 구체화 했으며, 조사선 사상을 더욱 꽃피우는 원동력이 되어 중국의 새로운 선불교의 모습을 발전시켰다는 점에서 중요한 사건이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Master Baichang(百丈) is the person who succeed to the seon thought of Huaijang and Matsu and achieved remarkable developments of 'Five Houses of Seon Schools(禪宗五家)' that represented by excellent disciples such as Huangpo(黃檗) and Weishan(潙山). Master Baichang who succeed to the Seon thought of Matsu contributed to the foundation of Seon School by establishing the Pure Rules and, especially, his seon thought has a important position on Seon Tradition by passing down his thought to Weishan and Huangpo.
This study considers the Theory of Cultivation on Baichang's collections of sayings. Most of studies which related to the Baichang have been done on The Pure Rules, therefore the studies of Baichang's Seon thought have not been done. However, the Consideration of Baichang's seon thought is so important in that his thought had been passed down to excellent disciples such as Huangpo(黃檗) and Weishan(潙山), as a result, that had been prepared the ground for formation of Linchi School(臨濟宗) and Wei-yang school(潙仰宗). By frequent citing of Buddhist scriptures and early collections of seon praticers, Master Baichang spread his thought. So, most of all, It has very important meaning in that he supports his thought by the teachings of Buddha, Master Dharma, and early venerable monks of seon schools.
Master Baichang reveals his opinion by citing wide range of quotations of scriptures and collections. First, on the Theory of Nature mind, he emphasizes ‘No agony on the nature mind(心性無染)’. As The Nature of mind is originally clean and pure, the seon practicers merely keep their mind from agony or delusion. A phrase of Master Baichang, ‘The Truth of Nature Mind(體露眞常)’, means that our mind is the nature, and it is everlasting and unchangeable as it is. This Baichang's seon phrase emphasizes that the nature of mind originally pure and clean, so there is nothing to becloud the mind, and it succeed to Matsu's teaching ‘There is nothing to do, just keep your mind from agony(道不用修 但莫汚染)’. In addition, he defines the shape of enlightment as ‘The Sudden Enlightment and See the Nature of Mind(頓悟見性)’.
If we arrange the influences of Baichang's thought on the history of china Seon school, there are three remarkable points. First, he separated the Seon School from Vinaya temples by establishing the Pure Rules, and contributed to the foundation of Seon School. Second, he succeeded to the seon thought of Huaijang and Matsu(The Seon Order of Namak ; 南岳系), and passed down his thought to Huangpo(黃檗) and Weishan(潙山), created the Huaijang and Linchi order of ‘Five Houses of Seon Schools(禪宗五家)’. Third, he established the tradition of ‘The inheritance from master to disciple(師資相承)’.
From these respects, The appearance of Master Baichang on the history of China seon schools has very important position. His appearace had gave shape to the seon practice by establishing Pure Rules, also, it had been impetus to flourish the thought of Josa-seon(祖師禪). As a result, it attributes the development of new shape of Seon Buddhism in China.
