초록

이 논문은 잔 그레스햄 메이천(John Gresham Machen)의 성경관과 그의 변증에 관한 것이다. 메이천은 성경의 완전 영감, 단어 영감, 유기적 영감, 그리고 성경의 무오를 확고히 믿었다. 이러한 메이천의 성경관이 그의변증의 전제이며 근거였다. 동시에 그의 변증의 도구였다. 즉 그는 성경에 성경으로 변증했으며, 그의 변증은 성경적이었다. 필자는 논문을 통해‘역사적 기독교’와 ‘역사적 교리’와 ‘역사적 신앙’에 대한 메이천의 변증을살펴보았다. 그리고 메이천의 성경관과 변증에 관해 세 가지로 평가한다.
첫째, 변증의 근거와 도구에 관한 것이다. 메이천의 변증이 성경의 신적 권위를 믿는 확고한 성경관 위에서 진행되었다는 점에서 높이 평가한다. 자유주의 사상이 역사적 기독교를 공격했을 때, 메이천은 성경으로 ‘바울 종교의 기원’(The Origin of Paul’s Religion)을 변증했다는 사실이이를 증명한다. 그는 자유주의 신학이 무엇을 주장하는지 먼저 설명한 후, 이에 대해 성경 구절을 직접 사용하거나 여러 성경 구절들이 함축하는 내용을 인용하거나, ‘가능성’을 부정하는 방식으로 자유주의의 오류를 드러냈다.
둘째, 변증의 목적에 관한 것이다. 메이천의 변증 목적은 현대 자유주의 사상의 공격에서 역사적 기독교 신앙과 교리를 지키는 것이었다. 그는성경에서 초자연적인 요소를 제거하고, 신앙에서 역사를 분리해서 보편적종교의 원리를 기독교의 본질로 삼으려는 자유주의 사상으로부터 역사적기독교를 변호하였다. 이것은 『역사와 신앙』(History and Faith)에 잘 나타나 있고, 후대가 기억해야 할 그의 공헌이다.
셋째, 변증의 내용에 관한 것이다. 메이천의 변증의 주된 내용은 ‘역사적 교리’였다. 그는 기독교를 기독교 되게 하는 ‘기독교 근본 교리’에집중했다. 특히 그는 초대 교회가 ‘한 사건’, 즉 그리스도의 죽음과 부활에 근거했다는 사실을 강조했다. 심지어 그는 자신이 근본주의자라는 오해를 받으면서까지 역사적 기독교 교리를 수호하고자 했다. 이러한 점이그의 『기독교와 자유주의』(Christianity and Liberality), 『무엇이 믿음인가?』(What is Faith?)에서 분명하게 드러난다.
결국 메이천의 변증은 자유주의 신학과 사상으로부터 ‘역사적 기독교’ 와 ‘역사적 신앙과 교리’를 지키기 위한 ‘성경적 변증’이었다. 그리고 이것은 그의 확고한 성경관에서 나왔다고 평가 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper is about John Gresham Machen’s view of the Bible and his apologetics. Machen firmly believed in the full inspiration, word inspiration, organic inspiration, and inerrancy of the Bible. This view of the Bible of Machen’s was the premise and basis for his apologetics.
At the same time, it was an instrument of his apologetics. That is, He made apologetics to the Bible with the Bible, and his apologetics were biblical. In my paper, I looked at Machen’s apologetics of ‘historic Christianity’, ‘historic doctrine’ and ‘historic faith’. And Machen’s view of the Bible and apologetics are assessed in three ways.
First, it concerns the basis and tools of apologetics. Machen’s apologetics are highly regarded for its progress on a firm view of the Bible with which he believes in the divine authority of the Bible. It is proven by the fact that Machen made apologetics for the Origin of Paul’s Religion with the Bible when liberal thought attacked historical Christianity. He first explained what liberal theology claims, then he revealed the error of liberalism in a way that he used the Bible verses directly, cited the implications of several Bible verses, or denied the ‘possibility’.
Second, it concerns the purpose of apologetics. The purpose of Machen’s apologetics was to defend the historical Christian faith and doctrine from the attacks of modern liberal thought. He defended historical Christianity from the liberal idea of removing supernatural elements from the Bible, separating history from faith, and making the principle of universal religion the essence of Christianity. This is well represented in History and Faith and is his contribution that future generations should remember.
Third, it concerns the content of apologetics. The main content of Machen’s apologetics was ‘historical doctrine’. He focused on the “Christian fundamental doctrine” that makes Christianity Christian. In particular, he emphasized the fact that the early church was based on ‘an event’, namely the death and resurrection of Christ. Even when he was misunderstood as a fundamentalist, he sought to defend the historical Christian doctrine. This is evident in his Christianity and Liberality, What is Faith? After all, Machen’s apologetics was ‘biblical apologetics’ to protect ‘historical Christianity’ and ‘historical faith and doctrine’ from liberal theology and thought. And it can be assessed that this came from his unwavering view of the Bible.
