성명(姓名)의 항렬자(行列字)에 관한 고찰: 항렬자의 전개 과정과 유형을 중심으로 (A Study on Hangnyeolja of Full Name: Focused on the Development Process and Type of Hangnyeolja)

초록

항렬자는 친족집단 간의 상하 세대 관계를 나타내기 위하여 각 가문에서 미리 정하여 공통으로 사용하는 이름 두 글자 중의 한 글자이다. 신라 말 10세기 초반 왕족을 중심으로 형제간에 자연 발생적으로 생성되어 상층·중층·하층으로 4촌과 6촌을 거쳐서 17세기 초반에 8촌까지 확대되었고, 18세기 후반부터 대동(大同) 항렬자를 만들어 동성동본까지 확대 사용하였다. 형성 과정에 중국 영향을 받아서 16세기 말에 정착한 오행상생법과 음양순환법, 기타 유형으로 구분되나 오행상생법이 대부분이고 음양순환법과 기타 유형은 소수이다. 세 유형 모두 가문의 화합과 번성의 의미를 담고 있으며, 전후 1대 순환이 보편적인 배정 원칙이다.
갑오개혁과 1909년 민적법(民籍法)으로 세 글자 성명을 갖게 된 후에도 상층 지향과 가문 중시로 항렬자 사용은 증가했다. 그러나 1960년대부터 빈곤에서 벗어나고 가문 의식이 약해지면서 개인주의가 강해지고 줄어든 출생아의 좋은 이름 작명에 제약이 되어 1960년대부터 항렬자 사용은 감소하였다. 최근 여성 상위가 일부 정착되고 특히 부계 친족집단인 동성동본 가문 의식도 더욱 약해지고 있으므로 항렬자 사용은 앞으로도 줄어들 수밖에 없다.
그러나 항렬자는 1,000년 이상 우리와 함께한 전통문화 유산이다. 상층 신분의 표지(標識)로 가문의 화합과 번성을 담은 항렬자가 가문의 통제 시스템으로 자리를 잡았으나 작명에 제약이 되고 시대적 흐름도 읽지 못하여 사용이 줄어들고 있지만, 융통성과 개방성으로 항렬자 사용의 활성화도 기대할 수 있다. 우리 전통문화인 항렬자를 활성화하기 위해서 여성 대동 항렬자 제정과 보명(譜名) 사용 장려 및 확대 대책이 필요하다.

영어초록

Hangnyeolja(行列字, a generation character) is one of the two characters of a given name, predetermined and commonly used in each family in order to represent the relationship between upper and lower generations among kinship groups. Spontaneously generated between siblings around the royal family from the late Silla dynasty to the early 10th century, it was extended from first and second cousins to third cousins in the early 17th century through the upper, middle, and the lower class. Daedong Hangnyeolja(大同 行列字, a generation character of the same surname and the same family origin) was created in the late 18th century and was expanded to the same surname and same family origin(同姓同本). They are divided into five‒elements co-prosperity method(五行相生法), yin-yang circulation method(陰陽循環法), and other types. Formed under the influence of China, the five‒elements co-prosperity method settled at the end of the 16th century. Most of them are based on the five‒elements co‒prosperity method, and yin‒yang circulation method and other types are less used. All three types carry the meaning of harmony and prosperity of the family.ItisauniversalprinciplethatHangnyeoljacirculatesevery generation.
Even after Gapo reform(甲午改革) and Minjeokbeob(民籍法, civil registration law) in 1909 granted three‒character names to everyone, the use of Hangnyeolja increased with aspiration towards the upper class and emphasis on family lineage(家門). Since the 1960s, however, the use of Hangnyeolja has decreased because individualism has strengthened, loyalty to family lineage (家門意識) has weakened, and because it constrained the “good naming” of the fewer newborn babies. Recently, female dominance is partly settled and especially, loyalty to family lineage, which is based on paternal kinship groups is weakening. Therefore, the use of Hangnyeolja is bound to be lower in the future.
Hangnyeolja has been a traditional cultural heritage of ours for over a thousand years. As a sign of upper class status and carrier of the harmony and prosperity of the family, Hangnyeolja was settled as a governing system of the family. But its usage is decreasing because it constrains naming and does not reflect the changing times. However, renewed active use of Hangnyeolja can be expected due to flexibility and openness. In order to activate Hangnyeolja which is our traditional culture, it is necessary to establish Female Daedong Hangnyeolja, and encourage and expand the Bomyeong(譜名, family lineage name).
