『訓蒙字會』의 확장성과 교육적 활용에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Extensibility and Educational Utilization of 『Hunmongjahoe(訓蒙字會)』)

초록

본 연구는 『훈몽자회』를 통해 전통시대 한자․한문 교육의 지향을 추적하고 현재적 시사를 진단하고자 시도되었다. 이에 국어학․중어학․한문학․교육학 등의 분야에서 이루어진 선행 연구의 성과를 반성적으로 검토하고, 註를 중심으로 『훈몽자회』의 성격을 재고찰하였다.
『훈몽자회』의 註는 한자의 訓과 音 및 漢語와 유가 경전, 作文과 의학 정보 등을 소개하는 등 다양한 내용으로 구성되었다. 『훈몽자회』의 註에서는 다양한 정보를 제시하여 학문적․실용적 지식의 외연을 확장시키면서도, 간략화를 방편으로 삼아 기존의 字會와는 다른 면모를 보이고 있으니, 이를 근거로 『훈몽자회』의 특성을 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 기존 교재의 체제가 가지는 장점을 수용하면서도 시대의 요구에 맞게 내용을 수정․증보하여 진일보된 교재를 편찬하였다.
둘째, 한글과 한문의 문자 특성을 이해하고 註釋을 부기함으로써 각 문자가 갖는 한계를 극복하고 상호보완적으로 활용하였다.
셋째, 한자와 언문을 중심으로 漢語[중국 口語]와 吏文[중국 文語]이라는 다른 체계의 언어 지식을 註에 함께 제시함으로써 외국어 구사 능력을 신장시키도록 설계하였다.
넷째, 의학과 작문 등 다방면의 실용 지식으로 註의 내용을 구성하되 간략하게 서술하여 지식의 외연을 효율적으로 확장시켰다.
정확한 지식의 전달과 지식의 효율적 확장에 주력했던 최세진의 편찬 의식은 현재의 한자․한문 교육에도 다음과 같은 시사를 제공한다.
첫째, 교육목표와 교육과정의 체계적 정비가 요구된다.
둘째, 확장성이 높은 교육내용의 구성이 요구된다.
셋째, 한자의 특수성을 다각적으로 고려한 교수방법의 모색이 요구된다.
『훈몽자회』에서 보이는 漢字․한글․漢語의 상호보완적 활용, 간략한 註의 제시를 통한 관련 지식의 효율적 확장, 체계화․범주화 등의 인지 전략 등은 현대의 한자․한문 교육이 나아가야 할 방향을 제시하기에 충분하며, 이에 우리는 『훈몽자회』가 던지는 시사를 외면하지 않아야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Through 『Hunmongjahoe(訓蒙字會)』, this study attempted to trace the direction of Chinese character and Classical Chinese education in traditional era and to examine the current implication. Accordingly, this study reviewed reflectively the results of previous studies conducted in the fields of Korean linguistics, Chinese linguistics, Chinese classics, and pedagogy. Also, it reconsidered the characteristics of 『Hunmongjahoe』 with emphasis on the annotations.
The annotations of 『Hunmongjahoe』 are composed of various contents including the introduction of the Korean translation of a Chinese character, the pronunciation of Chinese characters, Chinese language, scriptures, writings and medical information. In the annotations of 『Hunmongjahoe』, they present various information to ‘expand’ the scope of academic and practical knowledge, while using ‘simplification’ as a means, they are different from the existing Jahoe(字會). Based on this, the characteristics of 『Hunmongjahoe』 are summarized as follows.
First, while accepting the formal merits of the 『Thousand-Character Classic(千字文)』 and 『Yuhap(類合)』, it has compiled the advanced textbook by modifying and enlarging the contents to meet the needs of the times.
Second, by understanding the character features of Hangeul(Korean language) and Classical Chinese and adding the annotations, the limitations of each character were overcome and used complementarily.
Third, It was designed to enhance the ability to speak foreign languages by presenting together the language knowledge of different systems that are Chinese language[spoken language of China] and diplomatic and official document[written language of China] based on Chinese characters and Korean alphabet in annotations.
Fourth, the contents of annotations are composed with practical knowledge in various fields such as medicine and writing, but it has described briefly so it expands the scope of knowledge efficiently.
Choi Se-jin’s compilation consciousness, which focused on the delivery of accurate knowledge and the efficient expansion of knowledge, also provides the following implications for the current Chinese character and Classical Chinese education.
First, The systematical organization of educational goals and curriculum is required.
Second, The composition of highly scalable educational content is required.
Third, The search for teaching methods that consider the speciality of Chinese characters in a variety of ways is required.
The complementary use of Chinese character, Hangeul(Korean language) and Chinese language, the expansion of knowledge through the simple annotations and the categorization of cognition through systematic classification seen in 『Hunmongjahoe』 are sufficient to indicate the direction in which modern Chinese character and Classical Chinese education should proceed. In this regard, we should not ignore the implications thrown by 『Hunmongjahoe』.
