미얀마 식민시대 이전의 꺼잉족 기록에 관한 역사적 고찰 (A Historical Consideration on Kayin's Records prior to The Myanmar Colonial Period)

초록

미얀마의 역사는 버마족의 역사라고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 대부분의 기록 및 전승 사료는 버마족을 중심으로 서술되었다. 말하자면 미얀마의 역사 속에서 비(非)버마족은 다종족 사회라는 구조에도 불구하고 역사적으로 주변인에 불과한 저평가가 난무하고 있는 것이 사실이다. 미얀마 내 꺼잉족의 경우 역시 그들의 역사가 버마족에 의해 종종 몰역사적(沒歷史的) 전통이란 상정된 개념으로 설명되고 있지만, 이것은 미얀마 전 역사에서 발견되는 버마족 중심주의(中心主義) 사관(史觀)에서 비롯된 차별적·제한적 발상에 불과하다. 사료의 부재는 기록에 의한 전승에 큰 가치를 두지 않는 동남아인의 독특한 역사인식에서 비롯된 결과일 뿐, 미얀마의 꺼잉족 사회는 비록 사료의 제한성에도 불구하고 나름대로의 독특한 내러티브를 소유한 미얀마 역사의 한 주체인 것이다.
결과적으로 미얀마의 역사는 버마족과 꺼잉족의 상생(相生)의 역사이며 비록 버마족을 중심으로 하는 강력한 왕조의 역사가 미얀마 전체 전통사의 대부분을 차지하고 있지만, 꺼잉족은 자체적으로 기록된 역사를 가지고 있지 않을 뿐, 나름대로의 공동체를 형성해 역사를 ‘만들고’ 재해석해 왔으며, 미얀마 전역사에 걸쳐 결코 버마족에 비해 보잘 것 없고 역사적으로 평가 절하될 집단은 아니다. 특히 18세기 중엽에는 꺼잉족 집단을 지지 세력으로 하는 ‘꺼잉족의 왕’으로 불리는 통치자가 출현해 미얀마 영토에 강력한 권력을 형성되기도 했으며, 18세기 중엽에서 19세기 중엽 사이에는 버마족 왕실에 의해 경제적으로도 매우 중요한 집단으로 인식되고 있었다. 따라서 이러한 인식을 바탕으로 꺼잉족은 버마족에 의해 특별히 관할되고 통제되어 왔으며, 꺼잉족을 비롯한 주변종족의 인적자원은 버마족 왕조와 문화를 융성시키는 주요한 인프라로 작용하고 있었다.
본고는 미얀마 역사에서 꺼잉족이 주종족인 버마족에 어떠한 방식으로 대응하며 나름의 종족역사를 구현해 왔는지를 이해하기 위해, 미얀마 역사의 주변적 존재로 치부되어 온 꺼잉족에 대한 존재를 다양한 사료를 통해 살펴보고 그 역사적 함의를 밝히는데 목적이 있다.

영어초록

Myanmar's history books are largely descriptions centered around Burmese. So to speak, Burmese is described as a race lying in the center of negotiating and competing relations with neighboring races on the foundation of the powerful Burmese dynasty nation in Myanmar's history, with most primary historical data found in Myanmar having been recorded by Burmese as a principal agent. Although the history of a minority race within Myanmar is often explained in terms of a referred concept of history-less tradition by Burmese, this is nothing but a discriminatory idea originating from Burmese-centered historic view found in the entire Myanmar history. The lack of historical data usually originates from southeastern Asians' unique recognition of history not much valuing transmission by records, which is the case with Burmese as well, a phenomenon commonly found in overall remaining area and ethnic societies throughout southeast Asia. Therefore, Kayin's society in Myanmar is a primary agent of Myanmar history owning unique narratives of its own despite the limitations in historic data.
Consequently, Myanmar's history is a history of epigyny of Burmese and Kayin. Although the powerful dynasty influence centered around Burmese was decorating the most of traditional history, Kayin's race had "made" a history through forming its own community and reinterpreted the history who were not an insignificant group compared with Burmese throughout the entire Myanmar history despite the fact that they did not have their own recorded history. During the mid- 18th century, in particular, Kayin's ethnicity formed a powerful force with the aims as a supporting group, and were recognized as an economically important group by the Burmese royal family between the mid-18th and the mid-19th centuries. Thus, the human resources of surrounding races including Kayin's rae acted as a primary infra for prospering Burmese dynasty and culture.
Objective of the present article is to examine through diverse historic records the existence of Kayins who were deemed to be a peripheral being to understand what roles Kayin's race played in Myanmar history, how they responded to the main race of Burmese to realize its own racial history. This study might be significant in that it provides an important clue for understanding minority race's society within Myanmar as historic records about the Kayin race are lacking and primary historic data for neighboring races' society including Burmese are rarely found.
