‘동반자 작가’의 ‘체취 문학’ －이효석 소설의 감각과 냄새에 대한 일 고찰－ (‘The Body Odor Literature’ of ‘Fellow Traveler Writer’－A Study on the Senses and the Scent of Lee Hyo-seok’s Narratives－)

초록

이효석의 초기 텍스트는 계급적인 지향을 보이며, 따라서 박영희는 이효석을 “카프에 수반하는 작가”로 명명했다. 그러나 이효석은 사상과 미적 감각, 운동과 여성을 함께 추구한다는 점에서 박영희가 말한 동반자 작가와는 다른 의미의 ‘동반자 작가’였다. 그리고 이러한 특징은 “능금의 철학”을 통해 사상과 욕망, 이념과 감각을 미적으로 종합하고자 하는 나오미와 주리야 같은 여성 인물들의 모습에서도 잘 나타난다. 더 나아가 “능금의 철학”은 서구를 문화와 미의 중심으로 생각하는 태도와 관련되면서, 이효석이 묘사하는 프롤레타리아 운동이 구라파에서 온 “아름다운 것을 숭배”하는 한 가지 형식이었음을 알려준다.
한편 1938년에 발표된 「장미 병들다」, 「부록」, 「가을과 산양」 등의 텍스트는 공히 “칠 년”을 언급하는데, 이는 “능금의 철학” 이후의 역사적, 개인적 좌절을 함축하는 이효석 소설의 중요한 장치이다. 이때 주인공들은 서점을 경영하는 대신 염소를 기르거나 염소에게 책이나 일기장을 먹임으로써 책과 사상의 시대가 끝났음을 암시한다. 따라서 「막」의 세운이 “잡지 사업”을 그만두고 동반자살을 시도하는 것은 의미심장하다. 즉 세운은 유물적이고 감각적인 란야와 정신적 우상인 유례로 표상되는 분열적 상황 속에서 자살을 기도하는 「성화」의 ‘나’처럼 “이루지 못한 비극”을 연출한다. 이는 주인공과 세계, 주관과 객관의 본격적이고 현실적인 교섭과 갈등이 상실되었음을 의미하며 향나무의 죽음과도 관련된다. 요컨대 그는 「프레류드」의 주화와는 정반대로 향기를 맡지 못함과 동시에 사회적 역할도 맡지 못할 터이며, 따라서 이렇게 사상과 감각, 사업과 여성을 한꺼번에 잃었다는 점에서 동반자살에 성공한다. 즉 향나무를 키우는 후각의 주체였던 세운은 후각의 대상으로 전락한다.
그러므로 이효석이 「엉겅퀴의 장」에서 김치와 마늘 냄새 나는 주인공을 묘사한 것, 그리고 「벽공무한」의 일마가 러시아혁명을 피해 온 백인 여성과 자기를 “쭉정이”, 즉 타자로서 동일화하려 한 것은 흥미롭다. 하지만 “쭉정이의 사상”을 통과한 “구라파”는 염소의 뱃속에 들어간 책과 일기장들처럼 악취를 내뿜기도 할 것이다. 이렇게 이효석의 문학은 미학과 욕망, 감각과 이념, 주체와 타자, 서양과 조선 등과 관련된 복잡한 문제를 제기했으며, 그 역사적 변화의 서술을 통해 식민지인의 타자성과 잡종성을 표현함으로써 후각의 주체로서 “어른의 향기”를 풍기게 되었다.

영어초록

Lee Hyo-seok’s early texts showed a kind of the proletarian literary orientation, and therefore Park Young-hee named him “a fellow traveler writer accompanying the KAPF.” However, in that thought and aesthetic sense, movement and women are accompanied, Lee was a ‘fellow traveler writer’ in a different sense from the fellow traveler writer Park said. And this characteristic is also well expressed through female characters such as Naomi and Juriya, who seek to aesthetically synthesize ideas and desires, ideologies and senses through “the philosophy of apples.” Furthermore, the “philosophy of apples” relates to the attitude that regards the West as the center of culture and beauty, revealing that the proletarian movement described by Lee was a form of “worshiping the beautiful” from Europe.
Meanwhile, texts such as “Rose Sick,” “Appendix,” and “Autumn and the Goat” published in 1938 all refer to “seven years.” This is an important device of the narrative that implies historical and personal failures after the “philosophy of apples.” At this time, the protagonists suggest that the era of books and ideas is over by raising goats or feeding them books or diaries instead of running a bookstore. Therefore, it is significant that Sewoon, the main character of “The Act,” quits the “magazine business” and tries to commit an accompanying suicide. Sewoon directs an “unfulfilled tragedy” like “I” in “Sacred Paint,” who attempted to commit a suicide after suffering between the materialistic and sensuous Ranya and the spiritual idol Yurye. This means that the full-fledged and realistic interrelationship and conflict between the protagonist and the world, the subject and the object, has been lost, and it is further related to the death of the juniper tree.
Contrary to the main character of “Prelude,” Sewoon will not be able to smell the fragrance and at the same time not play a social role. Therefore, in the sense that he lost his thoughts (business) and his senses (women) at once, Sewoon succeeds in committing a accompanying suicide. In other words, Sewoon, who was the subject of the sense of smell when cultivating juniper trees, is reduced to the object of the sense of smell.
Therefore, it is interesting that Lee describes the protagonist who exudes the stink of kimchi and garlic in “The Chapter of Thistle,” and Ilma in Endless Blue Sky who tries to identify himself with a white woman who came to Manchuria to escape the Russian Revolution as “chaffs,” that is, the others. However, the “Europe” in “thought of chaff” may stink like books and diaries digested in a goat’s stomach. In this way, Lee Hyo-seok, as a ‘fellow traveler writer,’ raised complex issues related to aesthetics and desire, sense and ideology, subject and other, and the West and colonial Korea. And through expressing colonial Koreans’ otherness and hybridity by narrating the historical change of these issues, Lee’s literature began to exude the “scent of an adult” as a subject who can smell.
