근 현대 대구･경북지역 기독교의 보수성에 대한 일고찰 (A Study on the Conservative Characteristics of Christianity in Daegu-Gyeongbuk Area in Modern Times)

초록

본 연구에서는 대구･경북 지역의 천주교와 개신교가 정치와의 관계에서 드러낸 보수적입장의 역사적 형성과 전개과정에 대하여 일제강점기로부터 시작하여 미군정, 이승만 정권, 3공과 유신공화국, 그리고 5, 6공에 이르기까지의 논의를 전개한다.
대구･경북 지역의 정치사회적 보수성이 두드러지게 나타나는 것은 박정희 정권에서 시작하여 5, 6공 군사정권기라고 할 수 있다. 몇 가지 두드러진 역사적 사건이 이전에도 이 지역에서 발생하였지만 이전의 보수성과 다른 대구･경북만의 특수성이라 할 수 있는 지역 패권주의적이고 권력 유지를 위한 보수성이 이 시기에 집중적으로 형성되고 유포되었다. 즉전국적인 상황에서는 일제강점기의 친일, 친미, 그리고 반사회주의를 중심으로 한 기독교의 보수성이 해방 후 미군정기와 이승만 정권기에는 친미주의와 반공 이데올로기로 집중된보수성으로 전환하였다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 대구･경북 지역의 경우 박정희 정권기에 들어서 오늘날 소위 말하는 TK정서에 바탕 한 호남배척 등의 배타적인 권력보수가 등장하였고이어진 군사정권기에 이것이 더욱 강화되어 이 지역민들에게 내재화되었던 것이다.
한마디로 지역 패권주의적인 배타적 보수성과 정치권력을 유지하고자 하는 권력보수를형성하였다고 할 수 있다. 이것이 대구･경북지역의 특수성이며 이러한 특수한 보수성 형성과정에 대구지역의 가톨릭과 개신교가 비켜나지 않았음을 본 연구는 드러낸다.

영어초록

This study aims to clarify the social location of Catholicism and Protestantism in Daegu- Gyeongbuk area from the periods of Japanese occupation, US military regime, Rhee Syngman regime, Park Chung-hee regime to the military regimes of Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo, and to reveal their regional peculiar and unique characteristics revealed within their practices of religious and political conservatism. Catholicism and Protestantism of this region would make political interpretation about their socio-political situations in the light of Christian religious content, and intermingled Christianity with nationalism and independence movement, but mostly they would cooperate with the imperial Japanese government due, first, to the pro-Japanese policy of the western Christian missionaries, and second, to the compulsive policy of Japanese imperialism.
During the U.S. military regime, the local churches had inclined to anti-communist ideology as well as to pro-Americanism due, first, to their intention to offset their pro-Japanese activities, and second, to their religious orientation to anti-communism. The current conservative orientation of this area mostly centered on the anti-communist ideology has been formed from this period. This kind of ethos took its rapid and strong development after October People's Strife of 1946, an ideological confrontation between Christianity and communism developed into a political confrontation with numerous civil casualties. The anti-communist orientation had been intensified by the political linkage between the Youngnam regionalism(or provincialism) and Park's regime and continued to Chun's and Rho's regimes, which set up national security and stability as their political cause for the oppression of human rights and democracy. Meanwhile some regional notables including religious virtuosos or lay persons helped to have political linkage between military regimes and this area. On ideological level, they supported them in the name of anti-communism, but in practical level cooperated with, or backed up them with provincialism. Thus, the conservative stance of Christianity of Youngnam area had been developed historically along with their cooperation with the regimes for the regional integration with the orientation to in-group solidarity followed by, and supported with, out-group hostility.
