한일 근대 이행기, 양국 최초의 여성소설가 비교연구 (A Comparative Study on Japan and Korea's First Women Novelists in the Transitional Period of Modern Times)

초록

본고는 일본과 한국의 근대이행기 속에서 최초의 근대 여성소설가라는 타이틀을 얻은 김명순과 히구치 이치요(樋口一葉)에 대한 비교연구를 담고 있다. 당시 두 여성작가가 처한 시대상황은 이들 여성들에게 그리 우호적이지 않았다. 겉으로는 여성해방이라는 담론이 형성되고 있었지만 그 이면에는 여전히 남성중심의 사회가 유지되고 있었다. 특히 여성들에겐 조국의 미래를 짊어질 아이들과 일꾼들의 어머니와 아내로서의 역할이 강조되는 시기였다.
하지만 김명순과 이치요의 경우처럼, 사회의 모순을 극복하고자 했던 여성들의 등장과, 그것을 언어로 표현하고자 했던 여성작가의 등장은 거부할 수 없는 역사의 흐름이기도 했다. 이러한 흐름 속에서 김명순과 이치요는 당대 최고의 문인들의 극찬 속에 등단하게 된다. 시대적으로는 선후가 분명한 두 사람이지만 그들이 양국 근대이행기라는 같은 사회상황에 처해있던 만큼 그들이 양국의 문단사에서 겪은 일은 놀라울 만큼 유사했다.
특히 남성작가들만 참여하던 동인지의 영입제안을 받은 최초의 여성작가들이기도 했고, 이어 벌어진 영입거부와 강제탈퇴 사건 등을 통해 두 사람 모두 남성중심의 사회에서 주변인이 될 수밖에 없는 자신들의 우울한 상황을 통감해야 했다. 이렇게 내․외적으로 유사한 상황에 처해 있던 두 작가의 작품들은 마치 서로의 삶을 작품에 투영시키고 있다고 착각하게 만든다. 서로의 존재를 몰랐던 것을 고려한다면 이는 놀라운 일이면서도 시사하는 바가 크다고 하겠다. 서로 다른 시간대와 공간을 살아간 두 작가의 삶과 작품이 보여주는 놀라운 이러한 공통점은 이 연구의 시작점이자 종착점이라고 하겠다.

영어초록

This paper includes the comparative research on Kim Myeong-soon and Higuchi Ichiyo who gained the title of the first modern women novelist in the midst of the transition toward modern times of Korea and Japan. At that time, the situation of the times facing two women novelists was not so friendly to these two women. A discourse on women's liberation was formed on the surface, but behind it was still the male-dominated society. Particularly to women, it was the period that placed emphasis on the role as a wife or mother of children who should shoulder the future of their homeland workers.
Nevertheless, like the case of Kim Myeong-soon and Ichiyo, the emergence of the women who tried to tide over the contradictions in society and the appearance of a woman writer who tried to express such contradictions in language were also the stream of history that couldn't be rejected at all. In such a stream, Kim Myeong-soon and Ichiyo came to start their literary career amidst the extollment from the greatest writers of the day. Although the two writers were situated in different times, the experiences they went through in the history of literary circles were amazingly similar in so far as they were placed in the same social circumstances of the transitional period toward modern times.
Particularly, they were also the first women writers who were offered a proposal for recruitment by a literary coterie magazine in which only male writers used to participate, and through subsequent happenings of recruitment rejection and compulsory withdrawal, both women had to strongly feel their own gloomy situation where they couldn't but be marginal women in the androcentric society. Such overwhelming common points shown in the life and works of the two writers, who lived in separate time zone and space from each other, is the starting point of this study but also the final destination.
