Improving Task for Management of Korean Scenic Site by Comparing with Korea, China and Japan

Korea is a land of beauty, containing a lot of Scenic Sites. Under the Cultural Properties Protection Act, a Scenic Site is described as a picturesque place that is famous for either its beautiful natural scenery or cultural art. Services related to cultural assets began during the Japanese colonial period, and Scenic Sites have been classified as important cultural assets since the act was enacted after liberation. But it was not until the 1970s that the government designated Scenic Sites as cultural assets. This began 25 years of services related to cultural assets. Between 1995 and 2003, six items were designated as scenic sites. In all, seven Scenic Sites were designated in Korea between 1970 and 2003. The total number of Scenic Sites as of October 2009 is 57, which means 50 sites have been newly designated in the past six years. North Korea, which has an area similar to ours, has about 320 scenic sites, Japan has 355, and China has about 687. When comparing the number designated as Scenic Sites of the countries around us, we can see that the tasks related to scenicsites in our country are as follows:
First, it is necessary to establish a clear concept of scenic sites. Second, the number of sites designated as Scenic Sites is insufficient. Third, it is problem that current designation criteria for Scenic Sites focus on preservation. Fourth, it is problem that work of scenic site is managed by dual parts. Fifth, it is the question that cultural properties which should be designated as Scenic Sites are assigned for other categories. Sixth, duplicate designation between Scenic Sites and other cultural properties remains a problem. Seventh, finding resources related to the designation of a scenic site requires more work. Finally, we must plan efficient use and preservation of scenic sites.
