초록

한국 사회에서 1인 가구의 급증은 가족 형태와 사회 구조의 변화를 반영하며, 특히 여성 청년 1인 가구는 가족주의와 개인주의 사이에서 새로운 관계 맺기를 탐색하는 특성을 보인다. 본 연구는 2008년부터 2017년까지 인디애니페스트 수상작 중 1인 가구를 배경으로 한 단편 애니메이션을 중심으로 이들의 사회 반영과 예술적 재현을 탐구한다. 특히 여성 청년 1인 가구를 주요 배경으로 한 작품들을 분석하여 독립적 삶을 둘러싼 갈등과 가능성을 조명하고자 한다.
2000년대 한국 독립 애니메이션은 사회적 현상과 구조적 문제를 다룬 다양한 시도를 통해 양적·질적 성장을 이뤘다. 그중에서 1인 가구를 소재로 한 작품들이 고립, 소비사회, 관계의 상실, 장소 상실 등 현대적 문제를 재현하며 메시지를 전달했다. 이러한 애니메이션은 사회 문제에 대한 통찰과 메시지를 예술적으로 담아내며 한국 독립 애니메이션의 새로운 가능성을 제시했다.
박지연 감독의 <도시에서 그녀가 피할 수 없는 것들>(2008)은 장소 상실과 사회적 불안 속에서 여성 청년 1인 가구의 고립을 표현하며, 장소 조건이 삶의 질과 꿈의 형성에 미치는 영향을 비판적으로 재현한다. 정유미 감독의<먼지아이>(2009)는 집이라는 장소가 정체성 구축과 자기 성찰의 장소로 작용함을 섬세한 흑백 드로잉과 음향을 통해 묘사하며, 현대 여성의 독립적 삶의 본질을 탐구한다. 안형혜 감독의 <화려한 외출>(2017)은 신자유주의적 경제 환경 속에서 자율성과 소비의 모순을 상징적으로 드러내며, 여성 청년 1인 가구가 경험하는 불안과 갈등을 초현실적으로 재현한다.
이들 작품은 한국 사회에서 여성 청년 1인 가구는 경제적 불안정, 사회적 억압, 자아 발견의 복합적 맥락 속에서 자신의 정체성을 찾아가는 고된 과정을 겪고 있음을 재현한다. 또 이들 작품은 단순한 사회적 반영을 넘어 독창적 예술 언어로 구조적 문제를 탐구한다. 이를 통해 이들 애니메이션이 수행적 예술 행위로 기능하며, 여성 청년 세대의 주체적 삶과 자아 재발견의 가능성을 재조명함을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

The rapid increase in single-person households in Korean society reflects changes in family structures and social dynamics. In particular, young women living alone often navigate new forms of relationships, balancing familism and individualism. This study explores the social reflection and artistic representation of short animations set in single-person households, focusing on award-winning works from IndieAniFest between 2008 and 2017. It particularly analyzes works centered around young female single-person households to highlight the conflicts and possibilities surrounding independent living.
Since the 2000s, Korean independent animation has achieved quantitative and qualitative growth through diverse explorations of social phenomena and structural issues. Works focusing on singleperson households portray contemporary challenges such as isolation, consumerism, loss of relationships, and placelessness while conveying meaningful messages. Notable examples include films by directors Park Jee-youn, Jung Yu-mi, Jang Seung-wook, Jeong Min-ji, Kim Wanggeol, Lee Soon-seung, Jeong Da-hee, Kim Seung-hee, Lee Yong-sun, Hangbo Saebyul, and An Hyoung-hye. These animations offer artistic insights into social problems, presenting new possibilities for Korean independent animation.
Firstly, <The Things She Can’t Avoid in the City> (2008) by director Park Jee-youn expresses the isolation of young female single-person households amid placelessness and social anxiety, critically representing the impact of spatial conditions on quality of life and the formation of dreams.
Secondly, The <Dust Kid> (2009) by director JUNG Yu-mi depicts the home as a space for identity construction and self-reflection through delicate black-and-white drawings and sound, exploring the essence of independent life for modern women.
Thirdly, <A Grand Day Out> (2017) by director AN Hyoung-hye symbolically reveals the contradictions of autonomy and consumption in a neoliberal economic environment, surrealistically representing the anxieties and conflicts experienced by young female single-person households.
These works represent the arduous process young female singleperson households in Korean society undergo to find their identity within the complex contexts of economic instability, social oppression, and self-discovery.
Korean short animations focusing on single-person households critically address the structural problems of modern society while exploring issues of self, place, and relationships, particularly for young women. Through this, they artistically express women’s autonomous lives and self-rediscovery, shedding new light on the meaning of independent living. These works go beyond mere social reflection to explore the structural issues of Korean society with a unique artistic language of Korean short animation, re-examining the possibilities of autonomous lives desired by the young female generation. These works explore the process of identity-building among young women amid capitalist demands and social oppression, suggesting that animation creation functions as an expressive artistic act.
