‘소속 없는 신앙인’에 대한연구 (A Research on‘ Believer without Belonging’)

초록

이 연구는 한국 기독교계에서‘가나안 성도’라는 말로 표현되고 있는‘소속 없는 신앙인’의 실체와특성을파악하기위해진행되었다‘. 가나안성도’라는말은기독교인으로서의정체성은가지고 있지만 현재 교회를 나가지 않거나 또는 의도적으로‘기성’교회를 거부하는 사람들을 가리키기도 한다. 사회가 보다 다양하게 분화하고 다원화되는 경향으로 이러한 가나안 성도는 점차 증가하고 앞으로 우리 사회에서 종교와 관련하여 중심 주제가 될 가능성이 높다. 서구에서는이미 탈제도적 종교성 곧‘소속되지 않은 신앙’이라는 개념으로 이러한 문제가 제기된 바 있다. 그러나 우리 학계에서 이러한 새로운 종교성의 경향에 대한 연구는 전혀 이루어지지 않은 상황이다. 이 연구에서는 소속 없는 신앙을 가진 사람들에 대한 심층 면접을 통해 교회에 출석하던이들이 어떤 이유와 어떤 과정을 거쳐 가나안 성도가 되는지를 탐구함으로써 가나안 성도들의실체에 접근하고자 하였다. 그리고 이러한 현상을 우리 사회의 종교적 세속화의 한 측면으로 여겨질 수 있는지에 대한 이론적 근거를 마련하고자 하였다.
심층 면접 조사 결과 이들이 교회를 떠난 이유는 신앙에 대한 강요, 소통의 부재, 신앙과 삶의 불일치, 주체적인 신앙 표현의 욕구로 정리될 수 있다. 조사 결과, 우리 사회에서 교회를 떠나는 현상이 세속화의 영향인지를 단정하기는 어려우나 그 특성은 어느 정도 중첩된다고 할 수 있다.
이것은 종교 세속화의 한 측면으로서‘보이지 않는 종교’를 논의했던 토마스 루크만의 핵심 논제이기도 하고, 앞에서 살펴보았던 최근 서구 교회의 경험과도 일정 부분 일치하는 것이다.

영어초록

This research attempts to find out the substance and characteristic of ‘believers without Belonging,’ also known as ‘Canaan Believers’among the Korean Christians. The expression ‘Canaan Believers’ refers to those who maintain Christian identity but currently do not attend church.
As the Israelites roamed around for Canaan, these people are in search of ‘new’ church. The expression also refers to those who do not go to church,or those who purposely reject established church.
As the society becomes more diverse and spread out, the number of these Canaan believers will increase, and the likelihood that these will become a center of attention in relation to society and religion will be high. In the West, ‘Believing without Belonging’ has already risen as an issue. This is an aspect of secularization where one escapes from systematic religious form to express and live out his or her own belief,another expression of ‘spiritual but not religious’ belief.
But, there are no studies being done in this new religious tendency in the academics. Discussions around secularization have been on-going, but there needs to be deeper research into seeing whether Canaan Believers is an aspect of trans-systematic religion or an aspect of secularization. By exploring specifically on those who express belief without belonging, this research attempts to deepen the study of secularization of religion in our society and contribute toward expanding our understanding of Korean religiosity.
In light of the fact that very little study has been done on ‘Belief without Belonging,’ this study, through in-depth interview, explores the reason and process by which those who once attended church become Canaan Believers in order to understand the essence of the Canaan Believers. By doing so, the study attempts to establish a theoretical basis as to whether these phenomenon can be understood as one aspect of a secularization of religion in our society.
In-depth interviews revealed that the reasons for leaving the church are being forced to attend church, lack of communication, inconsistency between faith and life, and selfish desire for spiritual expression. It is difficult from this research to conclude that the phenomenon of believers leaving the church in our society is due to the influence of secularization,but it can be said that the characteristics overlap. This is an aspect of religious secularization, which happens to be the main focus of Thomas Luckmann’s discussion on ‘invisible religion’ as well as corresponding partly to the experiences of the Western church examined earlier.
