Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Study of the Gambling Addiction Experiences of Persons with Acquired Visual Impairment

This study investigated the meaning and essence of gambling in the gambling addiction experiences of individuals with acquired visual impairment using an interpretatiParticipants were five people with acquired visual impairment who had experience in gambling for more than 10 years and got counseling more than 10 times in the gambling addiction center of OO region. In-depth interviews on their gambling experiences were conducted. Data were analyzed and interpreted in inductive and cyclical methods to transcribe verbatim and more originally understand their experiences and not to consider existing assumptions and premises about people with acquired visual disabilities and gambling addictions. The results of the study were classified into 31 meanings, 12 themes, and five theme clusters using a method suggested by Smith et al.(2012). The five theme clusters that interpreted participants’ meaning of gambling were examined. Participants had such psychological characteristics as a tendency to pursue high sensibility, cognitive biases, and gambler’s error. Also they showed cognitive fallacy and self-rationalization such as a compensation for social inequality and social alienation and satisfaction with a need to belong in the double stigma. Based on the results, this study discussed alienation, self-enhancement, and the abandonment of the pursuit of meaning in gambling addicts with acquired visual impairment. The significance of this study is to provide a wide horizon for understanding clients with acquired visual impairment in addiction counseling and basic data for counselling, addiction, and social welfare practice.ve phenomenological analysis approach.
