증권회사의 리서치 지원 시스템 도입이 소속 재무분석가의 익예측치 특성에 미친 영향 (The Effect of the Adoption of Research Support System by Securities Companies on the Characteristics of the Earnings Forecasts Issued by the Financial Analysts)

초록

본 연구는 증권회사의 리서치 지원 시스템 도입이 해당 증권사 소속 재무분석가가 발표하는 이익예측치의 오차와 偏倚에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구이다. 리서치 지원 시스템이란 재무분석가가 체계적으로 연구를 수행하는데 도움이 될 수 있도록 기업의 재무제표 자료를 전산화(computerized) 한 컴퓨터 데이타베이스와, 이 데이타베이스를 이용해서 시스템적인 방법론에 따라 연구를 수행할 수 있는 프로그램 패키지를 말한다. 현재 국내에서는 FnGuide와 WiseFn에서 이러한 시스템을 개발하여 증권회사 등에 공급하는 역할을 수행하고 있다. 리서치 지원 시스템을 도입한 회사들은 시스템에 따라 재무분석가들이 체계적이고, 구조화되고, 공통적인 방법으로 분석을 수행할 수 있기 때문에, 리서치 지원 시스템을 이용하지 않고 재무분석가의 개인적인 능력에 의존하는 증권회사와 비교할 때 소속 재무분석가가 발표하는 이익예측치가 보다 정확하고 편의가 적을 수 있다. 2001년 부터 2005년 까지의 실제 자료를 이용하여 이러한 예측을 측정해 본 결과, 시스템을 도입한 회사 소속 재무분석가의 이익예측치의 낙관적 편의가 시스템을 도입하지 않은 회사 소속 재무분석가의 이익예측치에 포함된 낙관적 편의보다 적다는 것이 발견되었다. 또한 시스템을 도입한 회사들만을 대상으로 하여 시스템의 도입 이전과 이후를 비교해 본 결과, 시스템을 도입한 후 이익예측치의 낙관적 편의가 감소한다는 것이 발견되었다. 즉 리서치 지원 시스템이 재무분석가의 이익예측치의 낙관적 편의를 감소시킨다는 발견이다. 이러한 발견내용은 규제당국이나 증권회사, 투자자, 그리고 학계 등에 많은 시사점을 제공해 주고 있다.

영어초록

This study examines the effect of the adoption of the research support system by the securities companies on the error and bias of the earnings forecasts issued by the financial analysts belong to the companies. The research support system implies the computerized database on firms’ financial information which enables analysts to perform systematic research following the computerized methods provided by the system. In Korea, currently two software companies (FnGuide and WiseFn) develop and provide the system to securities companies as well as other organizations, such as regulators, academics, and other institutions. Thus, the properties of analysts’ forecasts issued by the system companies can greatly depend on the quality of the system in addition to the capability of individual analysts. The financial analysts of the securities companies which adopted the system could (i.e., system companies) use the system and thus perform research in systematic and similar ways. As a result, it may be possible that the error and bias included in the analysts’ earnings forecasts issued by the analysts in system companies could be lower than those issued by financial analysts belong to the securities companies which do not use the system (i.e., non-system companies). Using the data collected over 2001- 2005 period, this study examines this prediction. First, this study documents that the earnings forecasts issued by the analysts of system companies are less optimistically biased than those issued by the analysts of non-system companies. Second, this study reports that the earnings forecasts become less optimistically biased after the system companies adopted the system, but not before the adoption. These findings are interesting and provide valuable insights into the characteristics of analysts’ earnings forecasts toward regulators, analysts, investors, as well as academics.
