한국 페미니즘이 서구 중심적이라는 비판에 대한 (여성주의적) 고찰 (A (Feminist) Study on the Critique of Westernization of Korean Feminism)

초록

이 글은 한국 페미니즘이 서구 중심적이라는 비판과 그에 대한 대안적 논의들을 비판적으로 검토하고 있다. 이 논의를 둘러싸고 회자되는 유교 페미니즘을 점검하면서 서구 중심적인 페미니즘이라는 언술의 가부장적 시선을 밝히고, 또 다른 대안인 아시아 여성주의를 살피면서 서구적 담론에 대한 대항으로서 사상적 수위에서 전개되는 명분과 당위를 넘어서는 방법론적 대안을 제안한다.
한국 여성주의 정치학은 지속적인 성장에도 불구하고 페미니즘이 서구에서 파생된 것이기 때문에 한국 여성의 현실을 제대로 설명하지 못한다거나 연구자의 문제의식이 서구화되었다는 비판에 직면해왔다. 그리고 그에 대한 대안으로서 여성학계 안팎에서 유교 페미니즘과 아시아 여성주의가 대두되었다.
그런데 서구에 반하는 한국적 페미니즘으로서 등장한 유교 페미니즘은 유교와 가부장제가 결합되어 있는 현실을 설명하지 못하는 분석 수위의 한계가 있다. 또한 유교 페미니즘은 문화 본질주의의 한 형태라고 할 수 있는데, 이러한 논의가 대안으로서 회자되는 것은 서구와의 긴장에서 발생하는 가부장적 민족주의와 무관하지 않다. 전통과 문화의 담지자로서의 여성의 지위와 엘리트 남성의 특권적 지위를 위협하는 중산계층 여성의 사회 진출 및 지위 향상이라는 가부장제의 물리적 차원이 동시에 작동하고 있다. 아시아 여성주의는 아래로부터의 구체성을 확보하는 사실주의 방법과 같은 방법론의 문제의식 강화를 통해 서구와 비서구가 혼종하는 현실을 설명하는 데 기여할 수 있다.
그리고 페미니즘이 서구 중심적이라는 비판의 대상이 중산계층 배경의 여성주의 연구진과 그들이 생산하는 지식인데, 이 당연한 사실은 한국 기층 여성이 여성주의 의식 부재를 전제하고 있다는 면에서 엘리트주의적이다. 이 엘리트주의는, 여성학계 내부에서 지식의 계급성 문제를 포함한 재현의 정치(the politics of representation)와 관련된 중요한 문제인데, 지식 생산자의 경험의 구속성이 기층 여성의 삶에 대한 재현에서 왜곡을 낳는 것 또한 사실이다. 그러나 이러한 지식생산에서의 재현의 어려움과 한국 페미니즘의 기원과 내용이 서구식이기 때문에 문제적이라는 비판은 구분되어야 한다.

영어초록

This article examines the critique of westernized Korean feminism and its alternatives. Through a review of confucian feminism I demonstrate the discourse of westernized Korean feminism is intertwined with patriarchal nationalism by elite males in relation to the western society. This article furthermore suggests a methodological direction in the context of Asian feminism.
One of criticisms of Korean feminist politics is that the feminism/inquiries of feminists are westernized in that feminism originated from the west and then it fails to explain the Korean women’s lives. Confucian feminism and Asian feminism have come to emerge to counter the criticism (within feminist communities).
This article points out that Confucian feminism for the Korean’s unique feminism against westernized feminism has a problem with the level of analysis, which makes the feminism hard to explain the realities of Korean women influenced by patriarchal confucian values. Furthermore, I demonstrate that the reason of Confucian feminism, as a form of cultural essentialism, being discussed as one of alternatives is deeply interconnected with patriarchal nationalism (initiated by elite male leaders). Behind the operation of the confucian feminism, the gendered ideologies are working that women are subjected to a cultural and spiritual symbol of non-western societies, and the male’s patriarchal fear toward women’s practical threat that middle class educated women enter formerly male professional and political spheres seeking for women’s equal right and status to males. Asian feminism can make better contributions in feminist knowledge formations for the hybridity of western and non western through a methodological refinement such as realistic analysis.
One more naturalized fact in the critique of westernized Korean feminism is that the target of the critique is toward middle class scholars and their knowledges. It is in the very absence of the question of working class women’s feminist consciousness that we can find the criticism presumes elitism. The elitist nature of the criticism is related to the politics of representation of others within the feminist academia. It is true that due to the limitation of experiences, the distortion of representation of others happens. However the critique of feminism as westernized and the difficulties in the representation should not be confused.
