초록

This paper tried to define various basic concepts on science, technology, and society(STS) in order to facilitate understanding about STS researches in Korea, focusing on the present situation of Korea and roles of National Research Foundation of Korea on STS. First of all, this paper did a general overview on STS including its definition, the relationship between science and technology(ST) and society, and interaction among them. Second, the paper discussed more detailed explanations on STS's impacts to the future and recent global trends moving toward convergence of ST, social sciences, and art & humanities. Third, the current situation on STS in Korea was discussed in terms of universities and the government. As for Korea, excellent ST manpower and world-top information technology are recognized as strong points in order to build advanced country in the future, while lack of research ability in fundamental sciences is regarded as weakness. Fourth, this paper introduces NRF, which is the main research funding agency of Korean government, about its brief history, R&D budget reaching to 3 billion US$ in 2012, funding activities and its important role in the field of STS. The paper concludes that STS will play a pivotal role in order both to solve practical problems that might occur under rapidly changing global conditions and to make the better future society.
