초록

The purpose of the study is to analyze the concept of Jihad historically and apologetically in Islam’s belief system and its theology and to suggest how Christians missiologically approach Jihad that has been variously evolved throughout the history. Jihad in Quran is understood as the mark of expressing Muslim’s identity and spirituality in a more social and national level, Such a concept of Jihad was strengthened by the concept, Dar al-Islam, which was latter formulated by the Muslim theologians. The term, Dar al-Islam meaning ‘abode of peace’ implies the military characteristic of Islam in that Muslims should make all territories be submissive to Allah for peace. Thus, in Islam’s belief system, there is no peace and harmonious relationship with other countries unless they don’t follow in the way of Allah. In Islam, Jihad provides the practical strategies to reach the goal of Dar al-Islam and should be justified with any other military or coercive efforts at all expanses. That is the reason why terror or war is allowed and rewarded in Islam’s belief system as Jihad.
Muslims who exercise Jihad as their spirituality and missionary identity are to struggle against non-Muslims.
Nowadays, the contextualized Jihad, which has been developed from the middle of the eighth and the ninth century and that the contemporary Muslim leaders and scholars strongly support is seemingly contradictory to so called “the lesser Jihad” that came into existence along with the military and political traits from the birth of Islam. However, though it seeks to improve social reformation, struggle against an individual’s lower passion or ego, and provide welfare for God’s creatures in spiritual dimension, it is rooted in the classic Islam that stresses the expansion of territories in the way of Allah. Within the Islam’s belief system and its theology, the author argues that Muslim’s suggestion to engage Christian leaders in dialogues is skeptical. Nevertheless, the author also encourages Christians to try to communicate with Muslims to evangelize to them. Moreover, the multicultural contexts, where Muslims’ identity and spirituality could be changed with the influence of the multicultures are suggested as the desirable and appropriate missionary contexts. The appropriate missionary strategies should be designed for those contexts.
