This presentation examines and presents what appears to be an ironical phenomenon that pervades the practice of medicine and health care delivery in the Philippines and I dare say, the world over. More importantly, I wish to also present an alternative model of forming and shaping physicians as a sustainable response to the increasingly difficult challenge of preserving the culture of life that confronts the health professions.
This paper seeks first of all, to articulate and describe the context,interconnections and rationale on which the venture of setting up the Ateneo de Manila University’'s School of Medicine and Public Health is founded.
It also aims to describe the School’'s unique edge and way of proceeding guided by its articulated vision and mission as a concrete example of responding to the ever-increasing factors that contribute to shaping an anti-life culture in the world today.
The presentation is divided into five major parts. Part one sets the tone by presenting and describing the various dimensions and paradigms of health at the level of the individual and the community as well as health’'s impact on development. It will also articulate certain realities about the health sector that have arisen from this existing paradigm of health and the consequences that it has brought about to individuals, communities and to the development process. Part two provides a description of the current model of medical education that is prevalent in majority of the medical schools and universities in the Philippines today. This is followed by a presentation of key challenges that medical education in the Philippines currently faces. After all, medical education is deeply entrenched in the health care system, thus the pervasive and severe shortcomings of the Philippine health care system and perhaps health systems around the world for that matter also drive the reality that the manner by which physicians are educated and formed today has severe shortcomings that require immediate and vigorous corrective action. Part three presents an alternative model of forming and shaping physician-leaders through the newly established Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health. This section presents the foundational principles on which the School is anchored as well as its program of learning. Part four focuses on the significance and relevance of this venture for the Philippines and for the health sector around the world. It highlights the important contribution that this initiative offers. The final part provides brief summary remarks that can serve as forward movement towards reforms in educating and shaping physicians for the future.
