근대적 인간과 전근대적 종교의 심원: 1970년대 성장주의와 여의도순복음교회 (Modern Man with Premodern Religiosity: Ideology of Growth in the 1970s and Yoido Full Gospel Church)

초록

본 연구는 1970년대 한국 근대화의 핵심 정신을 ‘성장주의’로 명명하고 이것이 어떻게 대중의 일상적인 삶의 영역과 맞물렸는지를 규명하고자 한다. 이를 위해 1970년대에 급속히 팽창하여 한국을 대표하는 교회로 자리잡은 여의도순복음교회와 조용기 목사의 종교를 분석하면서 당시 한국의 성장주의와 일상의 종교가 결합되는 구체적 원리와 내용을 제시한다. 우선 조용기 목사는 그의 종교적 신념인 구원론과 축복론, 그리고 성령론을 통해 가난의 숙명을 끊어내는 근대적 인간으로의 변모를 제시한다. 그의 종교 교리는 성장을 세속적 차원에서 끌어내서 성스러운 종교적 경지로 이행시킨다. 전인적인 구원론과 축복론을 통해 성장은 좋고, 선하고, 신성하기까지 한 신의 뜻과 연결된다. 또한 그의 성령론은 근대적 인간의 자기긍정의 동력과 연결된다. 성령은 꿈꾸고 희망하는 긍정의 정신을 심어주고 그것을 실현하게 만드는 절대적 ‘능력’과 연결된다. 그런데 이를 위한 구체적인 종교적 실천행위는 전근대적 종교의 심원을 복원시킴으로써 이루어진다. 조 목사는 원초적인 영성의 욕구를 충족시키는 열광적인 의례와 신비주의적 종교행위를 제약 없이 해방시키는 기도원을 적극 활용한다. 기도원에서의 열광적인 종교행위는 급속한 근대화가 낳은 일상의 불안과 고통의 해방구로서 기능한다. 여의도순복음교회의 팽창 과정은 1970년대의 성장주의를 단순히 옹호하거나 활용하는 차원을 넘어서서 성장주의를 내면화하고 추동하고 실현하는 종교적 주체의 구성 과정을 보여준다. 이러한 종교유형은 ‘쟁취적 기복형’으로 정의된다. 이는 성장주의 아래 근대적 인간상과 전근대적 종교 심원이 혼합되면서 만들어진 독특한 한국의 개신교 종교문화의 일면을 제시한다.

영어초록

This study defines the core of modernization spirit during 1970s as 'Growth' and examined how this is associated with the realm of everyday life of the masses. This investigation involved studying the religion of Pastor Yonggi Cho and Yoido Full Gospel Church that rapidly expanded in the 1970s and became representative of Korean churches. Through this case study, the relational aspects between Korea’s Growthism in modernization and the daily religion are uncovered.
First, Pastor Yonggi Cho suggests transformation into a modern man who cut off the fate of poverty through his religious beliefs in the ‘Salvation’, ‘Blessing’, and ‘Holy Sprit.’ His religious doctrine draws ‘Growth’ from the secularized perspective then incorporates it into sacred religious realm. Through his Prosperity Theology on Salvation and Blessing, ‘Growth’ is connected with the will of God and is good and divine. Then his beliefs in ‘Holy Sprit’ relates to the power of modern self-affirmation. The Holy Spirit makes the believer a spirit of affirmation and the Holy Spirit is associated with the absolute ability to make dreams come true; however, the religious activity to achieve Growth is made by restoring the mind of the premodern religion. Pastor Cho actively utilizes an enthusiastic ritual that meets the primitive spiritual needs and a space of prayer house that liberalized mystical religious practices without restrictions. The expansion process of Yoido Full Gospel Church shows the process of forming a religious subject that internalizes, drives, and realizes the ideology of Growth, beyond simply advocating or exploiting the Growth ethos of the 1970s. This type of religion is defined as an 'acquisitive prosperity-seeking'. This type of religion has an affinity with the lower-middle class desiring upward mobility. This presents one aspect of Korean Protestant’s religious culture that is unique and yet made up of a mixture of modern man and premodern religious mind under Growthism.
