죽음에 대한 존 스타인벡의 비이성주의를 조디와 페페의 이니시에이션 과정에서 발견하기 (Discovering John Steinbeck’s Irrationalism on Death in Jody’s and Pepe’s Initiation Process)

초록

이 논문의 목적은 『긴 계곡』에 포함된 단편소설「선물」,「대산맥」,「약속」 그리고「도주」를 중심으로 존 스타인벡의 죽음에 대한 비이성주의 인생철학을 미성숙한 주인공 조디와 페페의 이니시에이션 과정에서 발견하고자 하는 것이다. 지금까지 네 작품들은 비평가들에게 이니시에이션 스토리, 아메리칸 드림, 죽음이라는 주제로 평가되어왔다. 즉, 작가가 단편소설들을 저작할 당시에 그의 어머니가 죽음에 임박하였음을 감안해서인지 이와 같은 연구들은 『붉은 망아지』의 주인공 조디(Jody)와「도주」의 페페(Pepe)가 경험하고 있는 성장과 죽음에 대한 연구가 그것들의 주를 이루고 있다. 그러나 이 논문은 기존의 이니시에이션 과정과 함께 아르투르 쇼펜하우어(Arthur Schopenhauer, 1788-1860)의 대표작인 『의지와 표상으로서의 세계』(Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung 1819)를 원용하여 스타인벡의 죽음에 대한 인생철학을 살펴보고 있다. 다시 말해서 필자는 쇼펜하우어의 시각에서 이들 작품 속에 나타난 스타인벡이 미성숙한 조디와 페페가 세상에 대한 각자의 첫 경험(initiation)을 통해서 죽음에 대한 어떠한 견해를 가지게 되었는지를 알아보자는 것이다. 그 결과, 첫 번째 단편인「선물」은 조디가 처음으로 죽음을 인식하는 양태를 보인다. 그는 자기의 집 앞 언덕에 오를 때 대기에서 느껴지는 불확실성 즉 변화와 상실의 감정 그리고 새롭고 낯선 것을 얻은 느낌을 감지한다. 이 장면은 다가올 사건을 예시함과 동시에 조디로 하여금 죽음을 인식하게 함으로써 그 자신의 성숙함에 이르는 소위 이니시에이션의 순간을 가지게 된다. 두 번째 단편인「대산맥」에서는 죽음에 대한 작가의 태도가 뚜렷하게 나타난다. 즉, 조디는 한때는 훌륭하였으나 이제는 노쇠한 인디언 지타노(Gitano)와 그와 같은 처지인 말 이스터(Easter)의 임박한 죽음을 묵상하게 된다. 또한 그는 이들이 함께 죽음을 의미하는 대산맥으로 간 순간을 떠올리면서 인간의 죽음을 인식하고 그 죽음에 대한 이름 모를 슬픔을 강렬하게 느끼게 된다. 한편, 세 번째 단편인「약속」에서는 삶과 죽음의 순환이 주제가 된다. 이 단편소설에서는 삶과 죽음이 순환관계를 이루고 있다. 즉, 우주의 한 사물의 생명에 대해 가지는 욕망이 오히려 또 다른 개체의 죽음을 의미함이다. 다시 말해서 이 작품에서 탄생한 새끼 망아지는 어미의 희생의 대가로 자신의 생명을 얻음이며, 이것은 스타인벡이 인생이란 삶과 죽음의 반복이라는 견해를 피력한 바이다. 이와 같은 사고는 작가가 인생의 덧없음을 의미한 것이기도 하다. 마지막으로 이들 작품들과 별도로 쓰인「도주」에서는 주인공 페페가 그가 원하지 않는 살인으로 인하여 도망자 신세가 되지만, 마침내는 죽음의 공포에서 자신의 죽음을 인식하면서도 이를 회피하지 않는 참으로 장렬한 죽음의 순간을 통해 인간으로 거듭나는 결말을 보이고 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to find a process of immature initiation protagonist Jody and Pepe about an unreasonable philosophy of life of John Steinbeck's death in the short story "The Gift," "The Great Mountains," "The Promise" and "Flight" contained in 『The Long Valley』. So far, four-story works have been considered as initiation story, the American dream and the subject of death to critics. In other words, the time to write a short story, the writer gives consideration of the imminent death of his mother, such research studies are fulfilled about an experiencing growth and death protagonist Jody in 『The Red Pony』and Pepe in the "Flight." However, this study is looking at the life of philosophy in John Steinbeck of traditional initiation process, along with representative works of Arthur Schopenhauer’s 『Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung』(1819). In other words, the author is to find out to have any opinion about the death through their first experience of the world to immature Jody and Pepe that appeared in these works from the perspective of Schopenhauer. In the first story "The Gift," Jody has first recognized death. When he ascends on the side-hill, he senses an uncertainty in the air, a feeling of change and loss and the gain of new and unfamiliar things. At the same time these premonitions foreshadow coming events, By Jody, it is recognized as causing death to have a moment of so-called initiation up to his maturity. In the second "The Great Mountains" is evident in the author’s attitude to death. In other words, Jody meditates the approaching demise of the venerable Indian Gitano, and of the decrepit horse, Easter. He feels he recalls the moment they left for the mountains, which mean the death with human death and intensely aware of the nameless sorrow for the death. On the other hand, the third piece of "The Promise" is the cycle of life and death topics. In this short story, which forms a circular relationship between life and death. That is, the desire for the life of one thing in the universe but rather a means for the death of another object. In other words, a colt born in this work is gaining at the expense of sacrificing their lives for its mare. This is that Steinbeck is the life is to express a repeat of view of life and death. Finally, unlike these works, in "Flight" written separately and Pepe are the protagonist owes a fugitive though he does not want to murder, finally is showing the ending is reborn as a human being through the fierce moments of death, yet actually recognize his own death in fear of death does not avoid it.
