어린이의 신학적 질문에 기초한 영성교육-'죽음' 인식을 중심으로- (Spirituality Education Founded on Children’s Theological Questions: On the Perception of Death)

초록

어린이들은 살아가면서 죽음을 직ㆍ간접적으로 경험하면서 그것에 대해 성찰한다. 여러학자들이 어린이의 죽음에 대한 이해의 정도를 자각, 분리감, 부동성, 환원불가능성, 비가역성, 인과관계, 기능장애, 보편성, 무감각성, 현현 등과 같은 하위 개념들과 관련하여 연구한 결과, 연령대에 따라 죽음에 대한 생각의 차이점들이 있음을 발견하였다. 일반적으로9세 이후부터 죽음은 모든 사람이 피할 수 없는 불가항력적인 일이라고 받아들인다. 그리고 그것이 어린 자신에게도 해당되는 일임을 깨닫게 되면서 죽음 이후의 삶과 천국에 대한 신념을 형성하는 계기가 된다.
기독교교육의 중요한 과제 중 하나는 어떻게 하면 아이들이 현재의 삶을 충실하게 살도록 할 뿐만 아니라, 건전한 영적 성장에로 이끌 수 있을까를 모색하는 일이다. 특히 예수 그리스도의 죽음과 부활에 근거한 신앙교육은 어린이의 죽음에 대한 인식이 어떠한가를 확인하지 않은 채 진전될 수 없다. 따라서 ‘죽음교육’은 아이들 나름대로 그것을 이해하는 방식에 따라 자연스럽게, 그리고 점진적으로 개발하는 차원에서 실시되어야 한다. 가까운 지인의 죽음에서 느끼는 이별의 슬픔을 통해 아이 스스로 그 의미를 발견하고, 천국을 소망할 수 있도록 돕는 것이 중요하다. 비록 나이가 어릴지라도 현재의 삶과 천국에서의 삶까지를 포함한 모든 삶을 통전적으로 바라볼 수 있도록 가르칠 필요가 있다. 이 때부모와 교사는 죽음 이후의 영원한 삶에 대한 확신이 있어야 한다. 그리고 수용적인 태도로 아이들과 솔직하게 대화할 수 있어야 한다. 아이들의 비현실적인 환상을 제한하거나,유치하다고 해서 그들의 반응을 무시해서도 안 된다. 또한 성인의 관점에서 그것을 설명하려고 들거나, 기독교 교리를 직접적으로 주입하지 않도록 주의해야 한다. 이것이 곧 어린이의 질문에 기초하여 영성을 개발하는 ‘어린이 신학’의 접근 방법이다. 확실히 ‘죽음’이라는 주제는 인간이 그의 유한성을 깨닫고 하나님께 전적으로 의지하도록 돕는 중요한 영성교육의 내용임에 틀림없다.

영어초록

The Evangels delivers a message of hope to faith communities through recounting the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Therefore, it is apparent that, in Christianity, there is a direct correlation between the Christians’ faith towards resurrection and their comprehension of death.
Children, too, reflect upon the concept of death through both direct and indirect experiences that take place in their lives. Many scholars,including psychologists and Christian educators, have discovered through research based on elements such as realization, separation, immobility,irrevocability, causality, dysfunction, universality, insensitivity, and appearance, the differences in children’s comprehension of death according to their ages: generally, children interpret death as an inevitable and universal happening after they turn the age of 10. Around this age,they develop more serious thoughts on afterlife and heaven. They also build up the ability to metaphysically interpret death.
One of the many important tasks of Christian education is to seek not only how to help children live their lives with faith and optimism,but also the method to better their spiritual growth. Faith education cannot make significant progress if it is to omit understanding how children interpret ‘death’. Also, the concept of resurrection cannot be taught to children without taking into account the thoughts and opinions they have about the subject matter. This pedagogical method has to be practiced with a purpose to gradually develop children’s awareness of death, while considering their own methods of understanding the concept.
Although a child may be young, it is necessary to teach him/her to attain a holistic perspective of life, which lets the child vision life as inclusive of both the present life and the life in heaven. Parents and teachers must be able to communicate with children with both a stern belief in eternal life and a receptive manner. Children’s interpretation of death shall not be ignored just because it is illogical or strange, nor should their illusion be restrained. Also, trying to explain the concept of death from a grown-up’s point of view or indoctrinating are wrong methods of education that should be avoided, because the reality behind death is something that is yet to be fully understood by young children.
Clearly, there is no doubt that the theme of ‘death’ is one of the contents of Christian Education, which enables humans to acknowledge their limit and thus rely on God.
