마종기 시에 나타난 경계인 의식과 죽음 의식 (A study of the sorrow of a marginal man and death perception in the poems of Jong―gi Mah.)

초록

시력 50여 년의 마종기의 시세계는 ‘경계인(境界人)’적 운명에 처한 슬픔이 그의 시의 핵심을 이루며 그의 문학의 창조적 힘임을 알 수 있다. 그의 시 작품들은 독자들의 많은 관심 속에서 주목을 받고 있지만 그에 대한 연구는 아직 본격적으로 이루어지지 않고 있다. 본고에서는 마종기 시의 근간을 이루는 경계인 의식과 죽음 의식을 통해 그의 시세계를 살펴보았다.
마종기의 시들은 경계인 의식과 죽음 의식이 따로 떨어져 있는 시들이 아니라 그것이 함께 길항하고 공존하고 있다고 하겠다. 그의 경계인 의식은 변경의 고독으로 그의 실존을 괴롭혀 왔지만 그 고통과 아픔을 마종기는 문학을 통해 승화시켜 왔다. 그의 ‘죽음 의식’은 ‘초월적 죽음’이었다고 하겠다. 초기시부터 ‘경계인 의식’에서 빚어진 고통이 그의 시집 『이슬의 눈』에서는 삶과 죽음을 하나로 보고 초월하는 경지에 이르게 되며, 디아스포라로서 경계를 초월하고 마침내 참자유를 찾게 된다.
그의 후기시들은 그를 한평생 따라다녔던 고국 지향성 및 고국욕망을 비워내는 과정과 연결되어 있다. 특히 그의 시집 『이슬의 눈』에 와서는 친혈육인 동생 종훈의 죽음에 대한 애절한 응시가 두드러지며, ‘미국인들의 죽음’(「게이의 남편」)에 깊은 관심을 표명한다. 그 같은 용서와 화해는 지상의 존재자들에 대한 박애(博愛), 기독교적 휴머니즘으로 나타나기도 한다. 그리고 초기 시부터 추구해 왔던 생명사상이 타자에 대한 사랑으로 이어진다. 마종기는 결국 지상에 존재하는 무수한 타자들과 천상적 평화를 나눌 수 있는 화해의 길을 모색하고 있는 것이다.
마종기의 시는 죽음의 절망에 함몰되지 않고, 감상에 젖어들지 않는다. 죽음은 신성하고, 죽음 후에 남겨진 사람들 역시 그 살아 있음으로 해서 신성하다. 죽음과 삶이 하나로 인식되면서 초월성을 보인다. 외롭게 변경을 떠돌던 마종기의 시는 죽음을 초월하면서 비로소 그의 시세계의 경계인 의식을 뛰어넘게 되고, 따뜻한 공감과 깊은 사유의 공간을 제공하고 있는 것이다.

영어초록

Jong―gi Mah's poetical journey reveals the poet's fundamental locomotion that originates from the sorrow of being a marginal man. Although his poetry has attracted many readers, the study on the poet or the words has not been carried out in earnest. In this thesis the transcendency of Jong―gi Mah's poetries are closely studied through his self―awareness as a marginal man and perception of death.
His poetries embrace consciousness of both marginal man and death; the two different concepts coexist and compete one another at the same time. Mah's understanding of death is to return to the natures of his homeland and to remain there eternally. Mah's self awareness as a marginal man always has challenged the poet's existence with struggle of being alone, However, such pain has sublimed through Mah's religion called literature. Since his early years, the pain of being a marginal man has ripened the poet's mentality and intellect. The pain reaches to the stage where Mah is able to perceive life and death as one as it is represented in his one of the most excellent poems, "Eyes of the dew." The pious structure that consistently widens and deepens his world finally wins Mah's freedom.
Mah's later works are more connected to the procedure of emptying his desire for homeland which has followed Mah for his entire life. Especially in "Eyes of the Dew," Mah's contemplation to his younger brother Jong―hun's death as well as the sympathy towards "American Deaths" (from "Husband of a Gay") is remarkable. In these works his cosmopolitan contemplation stands out as well. Such forgiveness is realized through love for all existence on the earth as well as christian humanity. Mah's love for the others develops and reaches to the point where his idea of life fully blooms. Jong―gi Mah eventually begins to seek the way to reconciliate with countless others on the earth in order to share heavenly peace.
Mah's poetry is neither destroyed nor sentimentalized by the fear of death. Death is pious as much as the people left to live are pious for their aliveness. Mah emphasizes that the sorrow for deaths should not be sentimentalized through words, that the sorrow should in fact be explored with vigilance. Mah's poetry in which the author has wandered fringe lands finally exceeds the sense of a marginal man when it transcends death; at last the poetry becomes able to provide room for deep contemplation and sympathy.
