죽음교육의 목적에서 탐색한 공자와 소크라테스의 죽음관 (Confucius’ and Socrates' Views of Death for the Purpose of Death Education)

초록

죽음교육의 목적은 크게 존재론적 차원과 사회 관계론적 차원으로 나눌 수 있다. 죽음교육은 죽음에 대한 이해나 신체적, 심리적, 사회적 과정과 양상의 학습을 통하여 삶의 가치와 의미를 탐색하고 자신의 죽음을 현실로 받아들임으로써 삶을 성찰하고 삶의 소중함을 인식할 수 있는 기초를 제공한다. 뿐만 아니라, 소중하고 의미 있는 타인의 상실과 사별을 겪으면서 그 슬픔에 대처할 수 있는 기술을 익힘으로써 영적 성숙의 기회를 제시하기도 한다. 동양의 현인인 공자의 경우 삶과 죽음을 대립적으로 파악하지 않았고, 죽음이나 사후문제보다는 현실적 삶을 중시하여 삶의 실천성에 관심을 두었다. 죽음의 본질이나 사후에 대한 관심의 규명보다는 죽음이 가지고 있는 ‘의미적’ 측면을 고심하였다. 그리고 죽음이 야기하는 슬픔을 인간의 자연스러운 반응으로 받아들이고 죽음으로 인한 상실에 대한 슬픔이나 안타까움을 직접 표현하였다. 서구의 철학자인 소크라테스는 영육이원론을 주장하며 영혼의 불멸성을 믿었으며, 죽음을 통해 비로소 지혜에 대한 완전한 인식을 얻는 것이라 강조하였다. 그러므로 죽음은 절대 슬퍼할 일이 아니다. 공자의 “처사지도(處死之道)”나 소크라테스의 “죽음을 통한 영혼의 해방”이라는 관점은 현대 교육적 차원에서 학생들의 생명감수성을 내면화하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다.

영어초록

The purpose of death education can be broadly divided into an ontological dimension and a socio-relational dimension. Death education is the basis for reflecting on life and recognizing the importance of life by exploring the value and meaning of it through the understanding of death. This entails the learning of physical, psychological, and social processes and aspects, and accepting one's death as reality. In addition to providing the foundation, it also provides opportunities for spiritual maturity by learning the skills to cope with the grief caused by such losses and bereavements of others that are precious and meaningful. In the light of this purpose of death education, the restoration of the intrinsic value of education that is neglected today would be welcomed by comparing and examining the views of death of both Confucius and Socrates, representative wise men in the east and the west. Confucius(551-479 B.C.) did not confront life and death, and focused on real life rather than death or post-mortem problems, focusing on the practicality of life. Rather than clarifying the essence or interest in death itself or after death, he was interested in the “meaning” of the aspect of death. In addition, the grief caused by death was accepted as a natural reaction of humans, and the grief or regret for the loss caused by death was directly expressed. Meanwhile, Socrates(470-399 B.C.) insisted on the principle of spiritual and physical dualism, believed in the immortality of the soul, and emphasized that it is only through death that a full awareness of wisdom is gained. Therefore, death is never something to be grieved. Confucius' “attitude toward death(cheo-sa-ji-do)” or Socrates' view of “the liberation of the soul through death” can be interpreted in a proper meaning for educational purposes today. Thus, through such teachings, it may cause students to internalize greater sensitivity to life.
