종교교육의 주제로서 죽음과 죽음교육 (Death and its education as themes of religious education)

초록

발달이론을 주장하는 학자들은 아이들이 발달단계상 아직 미발달 또는 마술적 단계(윌버), 감각적 혹은 전(前)조작적 단계(피아제), 전(前)인격적 단계(윌버)에 속한다고 보기 때문에, 아이들이 신학적이고 철학적인 주제에 관해 생각할 수 있고, 자기만의 방식으로 그러한 주제들에 대해 생각한다는 사실을 거의 인정하지 않는다.
그러나 어린이를 이미 온전한 인격체, 전인적 존재로 여기는 사람들에게 어린이가 철학적 더 나아가 신학적 사고를 할 수 있다는 것은 엄연한 사실이며, ‘어린이 영성운동’에서는 어린이를 이미 영적인 존재로 간주한다. 어린이신학을 말하는 대표자들 중 한 사람인 프리드리히 슈바이처(Friedrich Schweitzer)는 ‘어린이도 신학자다’라고 말하면서, 어린이신학을 “어린이에 의한, 어린이를 위한 그리고 어린이와 함께 하는 신학(Theologie von, für und mit Kindern)”이라고 정의한다.
또한 죽음은 우리의 삶 가까이에 존재하고 있지만, 아직까지 그리 주목받지 못했다. 특히 종교교육의 영역에서 그러했다. 그러나 죽음은 어린이들의 종교적인 관심을 불러일으킬 수 있고, 그리고 그것에 관해 탐구해야 하는 종교교육의 중요한 주제이다.
본 논문에서는 먼저, 죽음에 대한 일반적 이해와 종말론인 죽음 이해를 살펴보고, 다음으로는 어린이신학의 입장에서 죽음에 대해 어린이들과 대화한 독일 칼스루에(Karlsruhe)에서 실시된 연구를 고찰함으로써, ‘죽음’이 가진 종교교육적 의미를 밝히고, 삶의 의미를 묻는 ‘죽음’을 종교교육의 한 주제로 삼을 것을 제안한다.

영어초록

Can children think in theological or philosophical ways? Even when it comes to serious subjects like death, can they thoughtfully reflect upon them? Or do they really show any interests in something transcendent or eschatological?Child development theorists seldom accept that children can think of any serious or heavy theological and philosophical subjects and further that they can reflect upon them in their own ways. For children are, from a perspective of developmental stages, only experiencing the underdeveloped or magical stage(K. Wilber) or the sensorimotor or the preoperational stage(J. Piaget), or the prepersonal stage(K. Wilber). Also in the reason-based Aristotelian tradition of thought, the rationality of children has completely disregarded. In this train of thought, children are non-rational beings.
However, for those who regard children as beings with their whole personality or as holistic beings, it is more than obvious that children can develop philosophical thoughts and moreover theological ideas. For those who are involved in spiritual movement for children, a child is already a spiritual being. Friedrich Schweitzer, who has been one of leading propagandists for child theology, defines it as a “theology by children, for children and with children”(Theologie von, für und mit Kindern), saying that children are theologians.
Death is one of the closest to our lives, but it has never gained our enough and appropriate attention, especially in an area of religious education of children. Yet, death can invoke children’s interests for it, and it thus should be regarded as one of the important educational subjects for religious education of children.
This paper argues the meaning of death in religious education and suggest the topic of death, which asks the meaning of life, as an appropriate study subject for religious education, first by looking into an eschatological understanding of death within the horizon of general understandings of death and second by exploring dialogues with children about death in Karlsruhe, Germany from a perspective of child theology.
