Analyzing Socio-Demographic Differences in COVID-19 Response Behavior of Koreans: Insights from the CHAID Analysis

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound and far-reaching impact on public health, the economy, education, tourism, society, and others. This study examines how socio-demographic differences influence threat of infection, financial threat, stress, risk mitigation, and emotional consumption behavior of Koreans during COVID-19. The study collected research data using a structured questionnaire from 760 respondents in Korea.
Data were analyzed using Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID) method utilizing SPSS 26.0 software. The CHAID analysis on Koreans’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic reveals notable patterns. During pandemic, lower infection threats were observed in fully vaccinated, male, and middle-aged individuals, while those with religious affiliations faced higher risks. Financial threats were elevated for lower- and middle-income individuals, temporary and self-employed workers, but fully vaccinated people perceived less economic threat. Stress, anxiety, and depression levels were generally low, except for young and religiously active individuals who experienced higher stress.
Koreans actively adopted risk mitigation measures, including hand washing, mask-wearing, and social distancing during the pandemic. Emotional consumption during the pandemic was generally low for the Koreans, but females and higher-income individuals exhibited slightly higher emotional consumption behavior. This study uniquely addresses the socio-demographic variability in Koreans’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, offering substantial literary contributions and practical implications for policymakers, regulatory agencies, and healthcare sectors.
