    초록

Shamanism has been the strength to Koreans for a long time. It has appeared as shamanic faith and as traditional faith in our culture and still remains as popular belief, which greatly affects Korean's sentiment.
However, the cultural, artistical, and philosophical value of Shamanism have been derogated in Korean art.
Even more, Shamanism has been considered as entertainment or one of the old custom that is expected to extinct soon in Korean culture.
Again, the author of this study has tried to explore Shamanism that has taken place in our conscious and unconscious form the ancient time. Also, focused on Shamanism's symbolic expression of unique elements of Korean tradition, the author has reinterpretated Shamanism in the researcher's perspective and expressed Shamanism as fiber arts through computer weaving.
First of all, to fully understand the universality and complex characteristics of Shamanism and Shaman's special mind, the author studied literatures on Shamanism and symbolism of Shamanism in ancient Korean countries like Gojoseon, Goguryeo, Silla, Gaya, and etc. Through the use of computer weaving, the author has researched and expressed symbolism of Korean Shamanism in four categories: Birth of Divinity, Ordeal and Death, Rebirth, and Eternity and Jubilance.
Birth of Divinity is the "holiness" that people can depend on and where the power of shaman comes from.
Ordeal and death is the “physical pain” that the shaman goes through in order to submit to the wills of gods.
Rebirth means the "restroration, return, and exchange" that Shaman who gained the ability of Rebirth, lives for the community, and fulfills his or her duty.
Lastly, Eternity and Jubilance overcomes the mythological concept of "Shamanism is only the response and promise of god" and explains how living in the present is living with gods through Shamans.
To express the symbolism of Korean Shamanism, silk is used as material to present Shaman's costume and Oh-bang-saek, the five traditional colors of Korea, is used commonly in the art work. Also, the Theory of Yin-Yang and Five Elements is described with Oh-bang-saek, Sand-seng-gan-saek, the combined similar five traditional colors, and Sang-geuk-gan-saek, the combination of complementary five traditional colors. The form is based on the figures that are used in Shamans' costumes and tools. The patterns of circle, concentric circle, square, rhombus, triangle, and chinese character of mountain (山), leaving (出), and person (人) are used to present form.
Moreover, the symbolism of Korean Shamanism can be found in the Jang-seung and Sot-dae, the gods who protect the village, and the ceremonies to comfort the deads. The analysis is base on the Nam June Paik, Saeng Kwang Park, and many other Korean fiber artists who properly designed Korean traditional colors and symbols.
Based on these concepts, the author created 14 art works that symbolize the Korean Shamanism with plain weave, twill weave, double weave, and various weaving methods by using the computer weaving. The 14 art works are classified in four categories: Birth of Divinity, Death and Ordeal, Rebirth, and Eternity and Jubilance.
Shamanism, as the Medium between human and god, is expressed in translucid form. In the art works, the author related and restructured the repeating ceremony and the rites of passage of Shamanism. Also, the use of horizontal form describes the spiritual journey.
Through the study of Shamanism and producing the art work based on the study, the author came to a conclusion that Shamanism has been the hope for the better life and still remains as strength to the modern people. Also, it has a possibility to go over our own cultural value and be reconstituted globally.
The author has made an effort to bring up the unique elements of Korean tradition for the universality.
Moreover, the author hopes the research and art works could be an opportunity to prepare the foundation for the globalization of Korean value in fiber arts.
