김현 비평에서 ‘이론적 실천’의 의미와 비평의 역할 - ‘시의 사회학’은 어떻게 가능한가?(1) (How is Sociology of Poetry Possible? - The Meaning of “Theoretical Practice” in Kim Hyun’s Criticism and the Role of Criticism)

초록

1970년대의 한국 문학 비평이 전례 없이 활성화되면서 그 자신의 존재 의의를 확고히 할 수 있었던 것은, 즉 비평이 하나의 체계적인 문학 장르로 인정받기 시작한 것은, 문학과 현실 사이, 다시 말해 문학의 자율성과 타율성을 매개하는 자신의 고유한 역할을 확인했기 때문이다. 이때 김현이 「비평의 방법」에서 제기한 ‘실천적 이론’과 ‘이론적 실천’의 구분은 중요해진다. 이 중 김현 등 『문지』의 비평가들이 취한 후자의 방법론이 실제 효과를 발휘하기 위해서는, 첫째, 문학의 무용한 존재방식 자체를 선험적으로 인정하기보다는 개별 작품을 단위로 그 효과를 충분히 입증해야 하고, 둘째, 작가, 비평가, 독자라는 개별 주체들 사이에서 현실 개조의 의지가 어떻게 상호 이동할 수 있는지에 대해 보다 실증적으로 살펴야 하며, 셋째, 소설과 시라는 장르의 고유한 특징을 고려해 차별적으로 논할 필요가 있다. 이 글은 이러한 질문을 토대로 1970년대 김현의 비평에서 ‘이론적 실천’의 방법론 혹은 ‘시의 사회학’이 어떻게 실천되고 있는지 살핀다.
시에 관한 김현의 연구는 그것이 작품의 사회학으로 향할 경우에는 시라는 장르가 발생하게 된 역사․문화적 조건을 살피는 장르사회학적인 연구로, 그것이 작가의 사회학으로 향할 경우에는 시인 개인의 콤플렉스를 점검하거나 시인을 둘러싼 문화사적 정황을 살피는 심리학적 연구로 분화된다. 이러한 연구들은 시라는 장르 혹은 하나의 시 작품이 발생하게 된 외적 동기들에 더 많은 관심을 두는 것으로서, 거꾸로 시 작품이 작품의 외적 현실에 어떻게 개입할 수 있는지에 대해서는 분명한 해법을 보여주지 않는다. 그가 「비평의 방법」에서 기대한바 문학이 현실 개조의 의지를 드러낼 수 있다 하더라도, 그것이 어떻게 실증될 수 있는지에 대해서는 여전히 모호한 채로 남아 있는 것이다. 물론 1970년대의 김현이 시라는 장르를 통해 반복해 강조하는 것은 시의 사회적 존재에 관한 것이다. 문학 작품의 상품화에 맞서는 시의 존재는 그 존재 자체만으로도 생산성과 교환가치만을 강요하는 산업화 시대에 제동을 거는 역할을 할 수 있다는 것이다. 문학의 절대적 자율성을 전제로 말이다. 문학의 자율성만을 반복해 강조하는 김현의 ‘이론적 실천’의 방법론은 결국 현실 개조의 의지가 문학 내부로부터 문학 외부로 어떻게 이행될 수 있는지 구체적으로 논증하지 못한 이론에 불과한 이론이 되어버렸다고도 할 수 있다.
그러나 적어도 김현 그 자신에게 ‘이론적 실천’의 방법론이 단지 이론적인 것만은 아니게 되는 것은 한 명의 독자로서 그 자신의 독서(/비평) 과정에서 문학의 정치가 실현되기 때문이다. 즉 현실의 무지를 깨닫게 하고 문학이 하나의 꿈이 되는 과정이 한 명의 독자로서의 그 자신의 작업에 의해 증명되고 있기 때문이다. 이처럼 작가-작품-현실의 관계를 작가-작품-비평가(/독자)의 관계로 치환시킨 김현의 ‘이론적 실천’의 전략은 그 성공 여부가 충분히 증명될 수 없는 이론으로 남아 있다. 문학의 정치성은 독자의 사회학으로부터 점검되어야 하는, 여전히 ‘진행중’인 프로젝트인 것이다.

영어초록

The unprecedented proliferation of Korean literary criticism in the 1970s and its legitimization of its own existence were possible thanks to criticism’s unique role of mediating the relation between literature and reality, that is, between the autonomy and heteronomy of literature. The distinction between “practical theory” and “theoretical practice,” which Kim Hyun proposed in his The Methods of Criticism, was important at this stage. For the latter method, which was what the critics of Moonji, including Kim Hyun, had chosen, to take effect, first, the critics should amply demonstrate the effect of literary works individually, rather than accepting an a priori justification of the uselessness of literature. Second, critics should be more empirical in examining how the volition to reconstruct reality can interact between writers, critics, and readers. Third, there needs to be a differentiated discussion with the unique characteristics by genres, of novel and poetry, into consideration. This essay, based on the aforementioned questions, looks into how “theoretical practice” or “sociology of poetry” is practiced in Kim Hyun’s criticism written in the 1970s.
Kim Hyun’s studies on poetry can be classified in two; when focusing on the sociology of the work, his study took a genre-centered sociological approach by examining the historical and cultural conditions which led to the generation of the poetry as a genre, whereas when focusing on the sociology of the writer, Kim took a psychological approach and verified the complex the poet had as an individual or delved into the cultural history surrounding the poet. Such research puts more emphasis on the external objectives that gave rise to poetry as a genre or to a certain poem, but does not provide a clear answer to how works of poetry can be involved in its external reality. Even if literature can reflect the will to reconstruct reality, as Kim Hyun anticipated in The Methods of Criticism, how it can be demonstrated remains vague.
For sure, it is the social existence of poetry that Kim Hyun is repeatedly emphasizing while considering poetry as a genre in the 1970s. That is, the mere existence of poetry, against the commercialization of literature, can act as a brake against the industrial age, which solely imposes the notions of productivity and exchange value, with the absolute autonomy of literature as a precondition. In the end, the methodology to Kim Hyun’s “theoretical practice,” becomes a mere theory which repeatedly emphasizes the autonomy of literature, without providing a detailed demonstration of how the will to reconstruct reality can be implemented from literature to the outer world.
Nevertheless, for Kim Hyun himself, the methodology to “theoretical practice” was not merely a theoretical approach, since the politics of literature was realized in his own process of reading (/criticism) as an individual reader. In other words, Kim’s own works serve as a proof of a process in which literature calls attention to the ignorance of reality and literature becomes an aspiration. Thus, the success of Kim Hyun’s “theoretical practice” strategies, which substituted the relation between the writer-work-and reality with that between the writer-work-critic(/reader), has not been amply proven.
